Taedonggang Combined Fruit Farm Sharply Enlarged
Pyongyang, May 20 (KCNA) -- A project for expanding the capacity of the Taedonggang Combined Fruit Farm has made brisk headway since the end of last year. As a result, the area of the fruit farm has more than quadrupled in a matter of a few months and at least 1.8 million short apple trees of high-yielding species struck their roots in the right spring time.

The soldier-builders did a great deal of work in a three-dimensional way. Land was realigned, river and stream improvement projects carried out, a total of nearly 1,700km of trench-like ditches dug, hundreds of thousands of concrete props produced and set up and dozens of kilometers of fences erected.

Thanks to their popular heroism and devoted efforts, such major projects as cutting more than 6 million cubic meters of earth and laying it on the ground, digging ditches for fruit trees and applying manure were completed in the main by March, thereby opening up a bright prospect for creating hundreds of hectares of fruit orchards in the right time.

Pyongyangites including officials of ministries and national institutions helped the soldier-builders in their work. They applied more than a hundred tons of manure per hectare to the fields, increasing the fertility of soil in the orchards.

The orchards have been tended like a flower garden and the planting of fruit trees based on close-planting and cultivation technology of Korean style was carried out in a big way in the spring tree planting season.

The recently enlarged orchards have been built on the highest level under a long-term plan to put all requirements for fruit production such as the work to raise the soil fertility, distribution of fruit trees and irrigation system and the operation and management of the farm on a scientific, intensive and modern basis.

All young orchards on this farm are now covered with apple flowers, making the area of Wonhung fragrant with sweet smell of flowers in the height of this spring season.
