New Mushroom Cultivation Methods Developed
Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- The Mushroom Institute under the State Academy of Sciences of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has succeeded in the research into quick cultivation methods of Lentinus edodes.

The mushroom had usually been cultivated with spores cultured on chopped pieces of oak, maple or other trees.

One of the two newly-developed methods is that spawns are cultured in a bottle or vinyl bag before being cultured again into a big lump of fungi and another one is that a pouched substrate is inoculated with spores and cultured before the mushroom cultivation outside the pouch.

The methods, in which by-products of wood processing factories and agricultural fields are mainly used, are available in any places. In particular mountainous areas can make a great profit on them at low cost.

Ri Son Hui, 45, head of the institute, told KCNA that it has fully solved various technological issues such as selection of species for quick cultivation to suit the actual conditions of the country and enhancement of germination rate of fungi.

The new methods make it possible to harvest the mushroom within ten months, while reducing the production cycle by more than a half compared to the previous methods. Two or three months are enough for spawn cultivation.

They, less affected by seasonal and environmental changes, can increase production, reducing the consumption of timber.
