National Classic "Nyongbyonji"
Pyongyang, May 6 (KCNA) -- Preserved in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are many documentary heritages illustrative of the wisdom and talents of the Korean nation.

Among them is "Nyongbyonji" (a record book of Nyongbyon Town).

It was compiled in the middle of the 18th century. Being lost, it was reedited later to be handed down up to now.

The book, made up of two volumes, deals with the town's location, history, mountains, rivers, mineral waters, markets, historic spots, signal fire posts, lookouts, land, lakes, products, local schools annexed to the Confucian shrine, customs, famous servicemen, collections of poems and so on.

It also gives a fairly detailed description of Tangun, the father of Ancient Korea, and King Tongmyong, the founder of Koguryo.

What is conspicuous is that 16 Sinji characters created in the period of Ancient Korea were used in the book.

The book is of significance in studying not only the history of the Nyongbyon area but that of ancient and medieval times of Korea.
