Present at the opening ceremony were heads of state and government of foreign countries and representatives of international organizations and senior party and state officials of China.

Chinese President Hu Jintao declared the opening of the expo.

The participants appreciated a performance given by Chinese artistes and those of foreign countries and display of large lanterns, fountains and fireworks.

Prior to the opening ceremony, Kim Yong Nam was invited to the banquet given by Hu Jintao for foreign leaders.
