Korean People's Custom of Flower Cultivation
Pyongyang, April 28 (KCNA) -- Spring flower cultivation is in full swing at horticultural stations, industrial establishments and families in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Pyongyang City Flower Cultivation Station and horticultural stations in all districts of the city have planted many species of flowers in parks and pleasure grounds and renewed flowerbeds and flowerpot stands.

From long ago, the Korean people have considered flower to be an important part of their emotional life.

In the period of three kingdoms (Koguryo, Paekje and Silla), the people made flower gardens in their courtyards and planted various species of seasonal flowers. They also raised flower and fruit trees in their villages to add to their beauty.

Folding screens with flower pictures were in full vogue in the period of Koryo. One of them portrays pine and oak trees and various shapes of flowerpots and vases with peony and other flowers.

Flowers are often seen in Koryo celadon and white porcelains in the period of Ri Dynasty.

Korean ancestors favored pancakes patterned with azalea and chrysanthemum and liquor brewed with them and liked quiz on flowers.

Flowers made of silk, paper and other materials were also popular in the country.
