GNP's Move to Suppress Democracy Rapped
Pyongyang, February 22 (KCNA) -- More than 100 civic and public organizations of south Korea including the Solidarity for Progress, the south Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Joint Conference of Human Rights Organizations jointly called a press conference in Seoul on February 17 to denounce the action of the "Grand National Party" (GNP) to suppress the freedom of assembly and demonstration.

The organizations accused the GNP of working hard to railroad an "amendment to the law on assembly and demonstration" through "extraordinary session of the National Assembly".

They charged that this "amendment" is aimed at making the existing "law on assembly and demonstration" more retrogressive as it, in fact, calls for totally banning night assembly.

Noting that freedom of assembly and demonstration is the elementary right of the people, they declared it is a dictatorial and undemocratic action to totally abridge the right.
