Earliest Possible Conclusion of Peace Treaty Called for
Pyongyang, February 2 (KCNA) -- If another war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula, its catastrophic consequences will be incomparable with those of the last Korean war in the past century. The most realistic way of preventing such horrible disasters from taking place is to replace the outdated Armistice Agreement with a peace treaty as soon as possible for the purpose of establishing a lasting peace-keeping regime on the peninsula.

Rodong Sinmun Tuesday says this in a signed commentary.

It goes on:

If the AA is replaced with a peace treaty, it will be possible to defuse the military confrontation on the peninsula and automatically settle the issue of building confidence between the DPRK and the U.S. and, furthermore, create an atmosphere of peace in the Asia-Pacific.

There is no ground whatsoever for the U.S. to refuse to respond to the DPRK's proposal for concluding a peace treaty as the former clarified more than once that it "had no intention to invade" the DPRK and expressed its readiness to build a peace-keeping regime on the peninsula.

If the U.S. truly opts for settling the issue of the Korean Peninsula, the conclusion of a peace treaty will not pose any problem and the process for the denuclearization of the peninsula will make rapid progress.

The issue of concluding a peace treaty will find a smooth solution if the U.S. properly judges the changed situation and the trend of historic development and makes a bold switchover in its DPRK policy in line with its interests and the aspiration of the world peace-loving people.

The conclusion of a peace treaty is not an issue of one party bringing a benefit to the other party or that party giving a reward for it but a practicable political issue beneficial to the parties concerned including the DPRK and the U.S. and the international community and conducive to ensuring the world peace.

The U.S. should honestly respond to the DPRK's proposal. The U.S. would be well advised not to play a double game but follow the world people's mindset.
