Military Forces' Moves to Control Media under Fire
Pyongyang, January 11 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Committee for Settling the Past History for Truth and Reconciliation called a news conference in Seoul on January 7 to disclose the truth about the "media restructuring" conducted by Chun Doo Hwan-led military dictatorship forces in the past with an aim to seize power.

According to it, in 1980 the military dictatorship forces set the "Defense Security Command" in motion to make a detailed survey of individual sentiments of all the mediapersons, their relations with politicians and so on under the pretext of "ensuring public utility of broadcasting" and on its basis chose the objects of "media restructuring".

The military forces let the "Office of National Tax Administration" and the "Board of Audit and Inspection" put under surveillance and keep watch on those mediapersons who turned away from the demand of the "Defense Security Command" and sent notice to media organs that they would face management crisis, thus threatening them.

The dictators even declared the "martial law" and forced managers of media institutions to tender their resignations and went the lengths of threatening them to submit written requests for resignation by proxy.

As a result, many press organs including papers and news agencies were forced to "reform their structure" and the registration of periodical publications was cancelled by force for no reason.

In the meantime, the military dictators confiscated even properties of press organs and individual mediapersons under the pretext of "redemption" and "donation". They released misinformation that all those acts were in accord with "free will" in a bid to cover up the truth.

The military forces massively expelled progressive mediapersons in order to build media structure that accepts their dictatorship system.

They forced some of dismissed pressmen to enter the "Samchong Reeducation Corps" and imposed upon them all sorts of sufferings and restricted their employment in the subsequent period, too.

The above-said committee, disclosing these facts, demanded the present authorities recognize violation of the freedom of speech committed by the past military dictatorial regime and make an apology to the victims and take measures to ensure their reinstatement and compensation for them.
