Release of Prisoners of Conscience Demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, December 28 (KCNA) -- Ten odd civic and public organizations of south Korea including the South Headquarters of the Pan-National Alliance for Korea's Reunification, the (south) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy called a press conference in Seoul on Dec. 24, urging the authorities to release the prisoners of conscience.

At the conference speakers noted that the authorities are nowadays attempting to grant "special pardon" to big businessmen and privileged persons who have been imprisoned for their wrongdoings.

The authorities are busy with patronizing the big businessmen and privileged class who have exploited the common people, though they had committed themselves not to "pardon" the offenders who perpetrated wrongdoings, until recently, they pointed out.

There are many prisoners of conscience in jail, including reunification champions, Ryongsan evacuees and unionists, who have been detained on unreasonable charges by dint of the evil law against reunification, democracy and human rights, they said, accusing the authorities of disregarding their release.

They strongly demanded that the "government" stop the unreasonable "special pardon" at once and set free the prisoners of conscience.
