Development of Calendar
Pyongyang, November 23 (KCNA) -- The Korean nation had developed the calendar with importance attached to it and used it in farming and everyday life from ancient times.

The research into the calendar had been conducted from the period of the three kingdoms and the "Kujip Calendar" was made during the Kingdom of Koguryo.

The envoy of the Kingdom of Palhae brought the "Sonmyong Calendar", astronomical calendar, to Japan in 859. The latter had used it for 823 years from June of 861.

The "Sonmyong Calendar" was greatly conducive to developing astronomy, calendars and the overall social life in Japan. Later historians called the period of its use "Sonmyong Calendar era" and appreciated the presentation of the calendar as "a great memorial event in historical records" and "the greatest contribution to the Japanese culture" by the Palhae envoy.

The Koryo people developed the "Sonmyong Calendar" into new calendars including "Sipjong Calendar", "Chilyo Calendar", "Tungap Calendar" and "Kyonhaeng Calendar".

Astronomer Kang Po who was active in the period from the end of the 13th century to the first half of the 14th century made a numeration table by applying higher order interpolation to the calendar calculation so as to carry out the calendar calculation in a swift and accurate way. With it he edited the book "Susiryokchopbopripsong", thus producing the framework for making the calendar in the country. The Susi Calendar based on it had been used for nearly one century.

The research into the calendar was deepened during Ri Dynasty. In particular it turned into a state affair under the rule of King Sejong and the calendar was supplemented by solar eclipse and lunar eclipse and five planet parts.

After that "Chonse Calendar" and other calendars were made and used in Korea.
