New Branch of Waterway Goes Operational
Pyongyang, October 30 (KCNA) -- An inaugural ceremony of the Jamjin-Taebo branch of waterway was held in Kangso County, South Phyongan Province on Thursday.

The branch extends tens of kilometers from Mundong-ri, Jungsan County, to Jamjin-ri, Kangso County, and Taebosan-ri, Chollima County.

The completion of the gravity-fed branch of the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong waterway makes it possible to sufficiently water the paddy and non-paddy fields in Kangso, Chollima and Taedong Counties, while cutting down the use of electricity, and adequately supply water to the population in these areas.

Present at the ceremony were Kwak Pom Gi, vice-premier of the Cabinet, Kim Chang Sik, minister of Agriculture, Ri Thae Nam, chief secretary of the South Phyongan Provincial Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, officials concerned, members of the shock brigade, builders and working people involved in the waterway construction.

The thanks extended by General Secretary Kim Jong Il to the members of the shock brigade and working people in Kangso and Chollima Counties for performing labor feats in the waterway construction were conveyed to them.

Speeches were made at the ceremony to be followed by the inauguration of the waterway.
