Paleolithic Relics and Remains Discovered
Pyongyang, October 24 (KCNA) -- More than 14,000 pieces of historical relics and remains belonging to the Paleolithic Age have been recently unearthed in the Chongphadae Cavern, Hwangju County, North Hwanghae Province by archaeologists of Kim Il Sung University.

The cavern is situated 34km southwest of the Komunmoru Site in Sangwon County, Pyongyang City which is known widely as a site of the Old Stone Age.

The cavern is limestone natural one. The width of its entrance is 6 meters, its length from the entrance to the end is 32 meters and its height is 13.7 meters.

The archaeologists found that two layers of culture had existed there in the period from the middle term to the latter one of the Old Stone Age while excavating the sedimentary stratum of the cavern.

More than 30 pieces of stone tools including cutter, hand-taking axe, thrusting tool, scraper belonging to the middle term of the Old Stone Age were discovered in the first layer of culture and more than 2,000 pieces of stone tools such as pusher, carving tool and stone blade belonging to the latter term in the second layer of culture.

What attracts attention among the relics and remains is seven pieces of human fossils tantamount to five bodies excavated in the second layer of culture.

Two upper jaw-bones and three lower jaw-bones were confirmed as those of Modern men who had lived nearly 20000-60000 years ago. All the fossils are clear in their forms.

The oldest one out of the human fossils is 40000-60000 years old.

The archeological circle of the DPRK termed the fossil "Hwangju man".

Fossils of Modern men in the early age like "Hwangju man" have not been discovered in the region of the East Asia.

The bonfire sites found in several places prove that the Korean ancestors had used fire in their life from time immemorial.

Besides, more than 10,000 pieces of animal bone fossils were unearthed in the cavern. Among them are big bicorn rhinoceros, big-horned deer and others. They, which had lived in the past geological age, do not exist in Korea at present.

More than 1,570 pieces of spore and pollen fossils were also discovered there.

The relics and remains including the human fossils discovered in the cavern give a scientific and theoretical exposition to the fact that people had lived in the Taedong River basin centered on Pyongyang, creating their own culture from the dawn of the human history.
