Japanese Imperialists' Vicious Attempt to Obliterate Korean Language
Pyongyang, August 14 (KCNA) -- The Japanese imperialists had tried in a vicious way to obliterate the Korean language during their 40-odd-year-long colonial fascist rule over Korea in the first half of the 20th century.

Under the slogan of making the Korean people the subjects of the Japanese king, the invaders formed a powerful system in an attempt to utterly obliterate the Korean language. For this, they mobilized not only the administrative and police organs such as the "government-general in Korea", provincial, county and sub-county offices, police station, police substation and police box and even gendarme.

At the first stage of the "governor-general's" rule the Japanese language was announced as the mother tongue of the Korean people and a system under which those on the level of the provincial governor should work out and submit a "report on short course of mother tongue (Japanese language)" from November 1912 was established. The "government-general" adopted a directive on organizing Japanese language training schools in an extensive way from 1938 and forcibly implemented it. As a result the number of such schools amounted to more than 3,660 at the end of that year.

The Japanese imperialists fabricated the "Newspaper Law" in 1907 and "Publication Law" in 1909 to repress the publication of newspapers in Korea in every way. In 1910 they promulgated the "Publication Regulations" to intensify the obliteration of the Korean people's national character and national language.

The Japanese imperialists, who worked out the "Bill on the Revision of Education in Korea" on April 11, 1905, faked up and revised for the worse the "Directive on Education in Korea" in 1911, 1922 and 1938. By so doing, they had pushed ahead with the obliteration of the Korean language in the field of education in a vicious way and made no scruple to brutally suppress the students speaking in Korean.

They also laid a legal foundation for justifying the criminal "campaign to change Koreans' names to Japanese ones" and set up a system for suppressing those opposing it so as to push forward the campaign.

The campaign was a brutal mental torture imposed upon the Korean people and a pernicious crime against them.

The efforts of the Japanese imperialists to obliterate the Korean language under the name of "one and the same ancestry and roots" and "oneness of Japan and Korea" after they occupied Korea by force of arms were the most villainous criminal acts unprecedented in brigandish and vicious nature.
