Release of Prisoners of Conscience Demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, August 3 (KCNA) -- Civic and public organizations of south Korea, including the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy, the Solidarity for Peace and Human Rights, the Federation of Evacuees and the Association for Supporting Those Arrested for Involvement in Candlelight Actions, called a press conference in Seoul on July 30 to denounce the puppet authorities for the farce of deceptive "pardon."

The organizations in a press release charged that Lee Myung Bak in his "radio speech" on July 27 asserted that "pardon" would be granted on the occasion of August 15 only to those prisoners who committed crimes exclusively for their livelihood.

It is deception and hypocrisy to talk about "pardon" without setting free the prisoners of conscience who have been detained for the mere reason that they protested the wrong policy of the authorities and demanded the right to existence, the press release said.

It held that Lee Myung Bak should ensure the people's vital and democratic rights and release all the prisoners of conscience if he is truly willing to serve the people.

At the end of the press conference, the participants conveyed to "Chongwadae" a letter of protest demanding repeal of the oppressive rule and release of the prisoners of conscience.
