DPRK Asserts Independence and Equality
Pyongyang, July 18 (KCNA) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a dignified non-aligned country which values independence and equality more than its life and soul. Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, declared this, addressing the 15th NAM Summit on July 15.

He said that the current meeting is required to pay attention to invariably holding fast to independence and peace as a core idea of the NAM in setting its orientation in view of the present situation, maintaining a strategy for unity and increasing the capability for common actions and thereby materializing its noble idea and creditably performing its mission.

Noting that not only the peace and security of the country but also the dignity of the nation and sovereignty of the DPRK have been grossly violated by the high-handed acts of the U.S., Kim asserted that if such acts of the U.S. are allowed to go on, the DPRK would be totally deprived of the legitimate right to use space.

The DPRK can never accept dialogue or negotiations minus the principle of respect for sovereignty and equal sovereignty, he stated, and went on:

The prevailing situation compelled the DPRK government to take decisive steps to bolster up its nuclear deterrence.

The DPRK, too, is opposed to a nuclear war, nuclear arms race and nuclear proliferation like all other non-aligned countries.

The DPRK is the only country in the world which was so antagonized by the U.S. and exposed to such nuclear threat by it that it was compelled to have access to nuclear deterrence for self-defense.

The DPRK's nuclear weapon is not for invading or threatening others but is war deterrence for defending the peace and security on the Korean Peninsula in the true sense of the word.

As regards the situation on the Korean Peninsula the NAM should show keenest interest in making sure that the principle of respect for sovereignty and equal sovereignty is observed among the countries concerned.

The DPRK is convinced that its struggle for independence and equality is a just one in line with the idea and common interests of the NAM.

The DPRK government will as ever further boost the unity and solidarity with the non-aligned countries and wage a positive struggle for the stability on the peninsula and the world peace in the idea of independence, peace and friendship.
