The three principles --independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity-- laid down by President Kim Il Sung are the cornerstone of national reunification as they clarify the fundamental stand and ways to settle the issue of the reunification of the country in conformity with the will and interests of the Koreans by their concerted efforts.

The movement for national reunification has made progress in the direction of great national unity on the principle of national independence. This is ascribable to the fact that the Koreans have waged a struggle, firmly adhering to the above-said principles.

The historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and the October 4 declaration are based on the above-mentioned principles. These principles are also embodied in the idea of "By our nation itself" which is giving rise to the hot wind of independent reunification and national cooperation amidst the support and sympathy of the whole nation.

The June 15 era of reunification in which the future of peace and reunification is being carved out by the concerted efforts of the Koreans while rejecting foreign forces would be unthinkable without abiding by the three principles.

The Koreans have keenly realized the truth and vitality of the three principles in the course of dynamically advancing the movement for national reunification under the uplifted banner of the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration, shining embodiment of the three principles.

The said three principles are the most just and realistic reunification charter common to the nation to be unanimously adhered to by the whole nation. The three principles serve as an immutable banner of national reunification to be always held aloft by the Koreans as they reflect the President's noble idea and line of independent reunification and his patriotic intention and indicate most correct principles and ways for developing the reunification movement, concludes the article.
