Scientific Research into Development and Use of Water Resource
Pyongyang, March 21 (KCNA) -- Scientific researches into the development and utilization of water resources have been intensified in scientific research centers of the DPRK these years.

Scientists of the Geographical Research Institute of the State Academy of Sciences, on the basis of comprehensive survey and estimation of the water resources in the country, have solved many problems arising in developing and making rational use of them in various sectors of the national economy.

They settled the scientific and technological problems arising in the construction of a new kind of power station based on a method of developing hydraulic resources completely differing from those of the existing dam-type or watercourse-changing power stations, thus greatly contributing to bringing earlier the completion of power station construction.

And they went to hydropower stations, the electricity production of which has been hindered by deposit, and clarified the moving feature of the deposit scientifically and advanced ways for building structures to prevent deposit. They thus made it possible to increase electricity output considerably compared with the existing ones.

Those of the Hydrologic Research Institute under the Hydro-Meteorology Service invented a scientific water management method for dealing with the accumulation on river-bed, which is helpful to ensuring the water quality of River Taedong on a high level.

They calculated in a scientific way the quantity and time of water discharge from barrages and reservoirs so as to economize water to the maximum while maintaining the speed of water flow and washing away the deposit. As a result, they have successfully ensured the exchanging of water of River Taedong on several occasions up to now and prevented the deposit in the river.

Scientists of the Environmental Conservation Research Institute under the Ministry of Land and Environmental Conservation have developed a flocculant which makes it possible to ensure 98 percent purification of industrial spent water with the result that clean water always flows into the Taedong River.
