Swampy Resources under Protection
Pyongyang, February 21 (KCNA) -- Korea is rich in swampy resources as it faces seas on three sides and has many rivers and streams, natural and artificial lakes and reservoirs.

The swampy land is precious resource needed for protecting and propagating biodiversity on the earth.

According to the data released by the Natural Conservation Union of Korea, the swampy land is a good habitat for animals and plants, migratory and water birds in particular. More than one million water birds fly into Korea to winter, out of which the birds of longbills genera reach to over 700,000.

The government has decided as reserves ten-odd swampy areas on the eastern and western coasts including Mundok, South Phyongan Province, and Kumya, South Hamgyong Province, and is directing greater efforts to protecting and managing them.

In particular, marshes, ponds, rivers, lakes and seashores where the depth of water is below six meters in ebb-tide were included in swampy lands. Activities are being down for the survey and study of swampy ecosystem, establishment, protection and management of swampy reserves and for rational use of swampy resources.

The government strictly bans hunting and illegal economic development and directs primary attention to protecting and managing the animals living in swampy reserves.

The work for protecting swampy resources begins in the DPRK from February every year.
