Kim Jong Il Inspects Minsok Street in Sariwon
Pyongyang, December 11 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il went round Minsok (folklore) Street built in the city of Sariwon.

Very satisfied at the fact that the builders have successfully constructed the folklore street of peculiar style by properly carrying forward and developing the national cultural inheritance true to the WPK's policy, he gave a high appreciation of their feat.

Deeply reflected in the folk customs native to Korea, developed and enriched through a long history, are the national characteristics such as creative wisdom and skills, tastes and fancy of the resourceful and industrious Korean people, he said. Then he advanced the highly important tasks that will serve as guidelines in preserving the tradition of superior folk customs.

It is very good that materials for education in history are graphically furnished in the street to give a visual panorama of the intelligent and sagacious Korean nation's superiority, he said, adding: Such centers for education in history should be built massively in Mt. Taesong and other places associated with a long tradition in the coming years.

He stressed that to be cautious of both restorationism and national nihilism by combining the principle of fidelity to historical truth with the principle of modernity is the policy invariably pursued by the WPK in carrying forward and developing the national cultural inheritance. This principle has been strictly adhered to over the past years and, after all, the superior national culture created by the ancestors has been developing into the genuine culture of the working people in the era of the Workers' Party, he said.

The role of officials and scientists in the field of history including historicians is of great importance in properly preserving the tradition of folk customs, he said, calling for paying deep attention to the researches for academically ascertaining the folk customs native to Korea.

He held that all the superior folk customs, created by the ancestors, including traditional dishes, games and etiquette should be found out in the present time and developed to suit the modern aesthetic sense, thus making the national fragrance further prevail all over the society.

He was accompanied by Choe Ryong Hae, chief secretary of the North Hwanghae Provincial Committee of the WPK, Pak Nam Gi, department director of the WPK Central Committee, Ri Jae Il, first vice department director of the C.C., the WPK, and Generals of the Korean People's Army Hyon Chol Hae and Ri Myong Su.
