Japanese Authorities' Politically Motivated Suppression of Chongryon under Fire
Pyongyang, December 9 (KCNA) -- "A meeting of Koreans in Japan to condemn the illegal and unwarranted politically motivated suppression and human rights abuses perpetrated by the Japanese authorities against the commercial organizations and Korean workers in commerce" took place in Tokyo on Dec. 6.

Present there were officials including Ho Jong Man, chief vice-chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), and its vice-chairmen, advisers to the Central Standing Committee of Chongryon, the chairman of the Tokyo Metropolitan Headquarters of Chongryon, the president of the Standing Council of the Federation of Korean Workers in Commerce in Japan, the chairman of the Tokyo Metropolitan Association of Korean Workers in Commerce in Japan, chairmen of the headquarters of Chongryon in various regions and compatriots.

Nam Sung U, vice-chairman of the Central Standing Committee of Chongryon, in his report made at the meeting bitterly condemned the Japanese authorities for perpetrating politically motivated brutal suppression and human rights abuses against the commercial organizations and Korean workers in commerce on behalf of all officials of Chongryon and Koreans in Japan.

He accused Japan of groundlessly finding fault with Chongryon, persistently sidestepping the issue of settling its past, a core issue in the DPRK-Japan relations, and pursuing the policy of undisguised crackdown on Koreans in Japan by using state power.

He charged that through such campaign Japan seeks a sinister aim to weaken the commercial organizations and tear off Korean workers in commerce from the organization of Chongryon and thus destroy it. It is its ulterior motive to tarnish the image of Chongryon and its commercial organizations with an eye to isolate them from Japanese people, he added.

He called on all officials of Chongryon and commercial organizations to unite closer around Chongryon and wage a more dynamic struggle with the unshakable will that they are sure to triumph as long as they are under the leadership of General Secretary Kim Jong Il and firm faith in the justice of their activities.

A report on the truth about the Japanese police's crackdown on Chongryon and commercial organizations was made at the meeting.

Shinko Fukuyama, director general of the "Peace Forum", and Sumiko Shimizu, representative of the Japanese Women's Liaison Council for Solidarity with the Korean Women, made solidarity speeches. Solidarity messages from the committees of the north, the south and overseas sides for implementing the June 15 joint declaration were introduced before protest speeches were made by representatives of compatriots of various strata.

Messages of protest to the Japanese government and the Metropolitan Police Office were adopted and a group of protesters made up of representatives of various circles was formed at the meeting.
