Paechon Ginkgo, Natural Treasure

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- There are two ginkgos about six hundred years old at the southern foot of Mt. Chiak in Paechon town, Paechon County, South Hwanghae Province of the DPRK.
They are among the tallest and oldest trees in Korea. Registered as natural treasures, they are protected by the state.
One of them is about 33 meters in height, 7.2 meters in bottom girth and 6 meters in chest-height girth.
The tree branches out at the height of 10 meters to form an umbrella-shaped crown which is 31 meters in north-south width and 21 meters in east-west width.
Its flower blooms in May. It bears fruit in June, which is ripe in October.
The other tree is rather smaller in height and the growing force is the same.

Cloud of War Hangs over Korea

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- Fifty-eight years have elapsed since the U.S. imperialists unleashed the Korean War on June 25, 1950.
The Korean War was a war of aggression started by the U.S. imperialists in an attempt to occupy the whole of Korea by force of arms and a war of brutal massacre and destruction unprecedented in the world history of war.
For the purpose of achieving their wild ambition of aggression, the invaders mobilized huge armed forces--their main forces, south Korean puppet army and troops of 15 satellite countries--and military hardware and reduced everything in the country to ashes with indiscriminate bombing and bombardment and massacred peaceful civilians right and left. It, however, sustained a shameful defeat, far from conquering or bringing the DPRK to its knees.
Instead of drawing a proper lesson from the defeat, the U.S. imperialists have so far escalated their aggressive moves against the DPRK stage by stage with a day dream of dominating the whole of Korea.
They have staged joint military exercises under various names every year together with the south Korean warmongers.
In the first six months of this year they have staged many war exercises against the DPRK including the "Key Resolve" and "Foal Eagle" joint military exercises and a large-scale joint ball-firing drill, inciting war-fever.
Last year the U.S. set an imaginary action area with the DPRK as the target and held a nuclear war exercise resembling a real one. It mobilized in the exercise "RSOI" forces including armored units and "striker" unit from its mainland and overseas bases, to say nothing of its troops present in south Korea, which were twice that of 2006, and naval force including the flagship "Blue Ridge" of its Seventh Fleet and the striking group of the nuclear-powered carrier "Ronald Reagan" and sophisticated air striking means.
The number of the war exercises opened to the public that the U.S. imperialists have held in south Korea exceeds 13,700. Out of them, typical south Korea-U.S. joint military exercises account for over 900 and the separate war drills of arms and services of the U.S. forces for over 2,400.
The facts show that, though it loudly talks about "dialog" and "peace", the U.S. actually tries to unleash a war against the north of Korea with wild ambition to dominate the DPRK.

Japan's Moves for Overseas Expansion Accused

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- Japan's adoption of the "basic law on space" and earnest escalation of its moves for the militarization of space are a revelation of the Japanese militarist forces' criminal scenario to build powerful armed forces of the three services and equip them even with weapons for attacking space in a bid to realize their ambition for overseas aggression more easily.
Rodong Sinmun Wednesday says this in a signed article.
    It goes on:
Japan, a war criminal state, is rushing headlong into unlimited arms buildup and overseas aggression aiming at the world conquest free from the international observation and control. This move of Japan has entered the phase of realizing the militarization of space, going beyond the tolerance limit, and taken the world by surprise.
Japan's military muscle has now become the second largest next to the U.S. in the capitalist world.
The Japanese militarists' adoption of the above-said law to pave the legal way for space militarization cannot be construed otherwise than a very dangerous move to wind up the preparations for carrying out the operation for military attack even in the field of space, keeping pace with their moves to bolster up their ground, naval and air forces.
Japan is no longer a "pacifist state" but has emerged a dangerous force of aggression and war.
The Japanese militarists are making much ado about "threat to Japan's security" under the pretext of "military threat" from someone. This is, however, nothing but sophism intended to cover up the aggressive nature and danger of their criminal moves to turn Japan into a military giant and launch overseas expansion.
It is none other than Japan which is blatantly challenging peace by stepping up the preparations for reinvasion such as arms buildup under the eyes of the world after working out an ambitious military strategy.
The Japanese militarists are working hard to evade the responsibility to redeem their crime-woven past, denying their past criminal aggression, prompted by their intention to justify their past aggression and embark upon the road of continental invasion again, concludes the article.

Lasting Peace on the Korean Peninsula Called for

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- Leading papers today in editorials carried 58 years after the U.S. imperialists provoked the Korean war of aggression call for meeting the challenges of the war forces at home and abroad and ensuring lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Rodong Sinmun says that the Korean War ignited by the U.S. imperialists on June 25, 1950 was a brazen-faced and brigandish war of aggression to put Korea under their colonial rule and, furthermore, conquer Asia and the rest of the world and the most barbarous war of genocide in the history of wars.
The U.S. has ceaselessly stepped up the arms build-up and joint military exercises targeted against the DPRK in wanton violation of the Korean Armistice Agreement since the outset of the new century, far from drawing a bitter lesson from its defeat in the Korean War and making a switchover in its policy of aggression toward the DPRK. It is instigating the puppet warmaniacs to confrontation and war against fellow countrymen. Since its seizure of power in south Korea the Lee Myung Bak group has boosted its cooperation with outside forces in the war moves, swimming against the trend of the times towards detente and peace. The bellicose moves escalated by the Lee Myung Bak regime in collusion with outside forces are throwing a stumbling block in the way of achieving peace and the reunification of the country and increasing the danger of the second Korean War.
The situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula at present requires all Koreans in the north and the south and overseas to unite close and wage a vigorous nationwide struggle to defend peace, the daily says, calling on all Koreans to hold aloft the banner of Songun and protect the dignity and sovereignty of the country and the nation and accomplish the historic cause of national reunification.
The daily underscored the need for all Koreans to stand on the same front of the struggle for peace against war and smash every move of the U.S. for a war of aggression against the DPRK, a grave threat to the peace on the Korean Peninsula, and the every reckless move of the Lee Myung Bak group, its lackeys, to ignite a war of aggression against the north.
Minju Joson stresses that no force on earth can ever arrest the struggle of the Korean nation to defend peace and achieve independent reunification under the uplifted banner of Songun.

Preservation of Peace on Korean Peninsula Called for

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- If a war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula again, it will certainly develop into a nuclear war to threaten the very existence of the nation. It is, therefore, the most urgent task to be fulfilled by the whole nation for protecting its existence and security and achieving the reunification of the country to defend peace from a war. Rodong Sinmun today observes this in a signed article.
    It goes on:
The entire nation should frustrate the moves of the bellicose forces at home and abroad to provoke a war of aggression against the north and intensify the struggle for peace against war in order to ensure peace on the peninsula.
The struggle for peace against war means a just and patriotic struggle to defend the cradle for the nation and a sacred struggle to pave the way for national reunification and the independent development of the nation.
All Koreans should stand up against the U.S. criminal war maneuvers and arms build-up threatening the existence and future of the nation and disturbing peace and blocking the reunification of the country and its moves to escalate the military pressure upon the DPRK and resolutely frustrate them.
The south Korean people should wage a vigorous struggle for independence against the U.S. and for the withdrawal of the U.S. forces and thus force the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces, the root cause of national misfortune and pain, to quit south Korea as early as possible.
They should, at the same time, intensify the struggle to check and foil the moves stepped up by the Lee Myung Bak group to boost the cooperation with foreign forces in war maneuvers and its reckless actions for a war of aggression against the north, hell-bent on sycophancy towards the U.S. and confrontation with fellow countrymen. All Koreans in the north and the south should turn out in the nation-wide patriotic struggle to remove the danger of war and defend peace.
The idea of "By our nation itself" serves as a powerful weapon in the struggle for peace against war.
All Koreans at home and abroad should firmly unite as one in the above-said idea and thoroughly smash the criminal moves of the U.S. and the Lee group, its lackeys, to provoke a new war by the concerted efforts of the nation.

Additional Negotiations Conducted on Beef Import Termed Illegal in S. Korea

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- The Democratic Labor Party and other opposition parties of south Korea on June 21 accused the Lee Myung Bak group of its announcement of the results of the additional negotiations conducted on the import of American beef, according to KBS of south Korea.
They charged that the "government" decided to ban the import of American cattle older than 30 months by what it called the "QSA" but this has neither legal binding force nor sanctions.
They deplored that the recent negotiations, in particular, failed to settle at all the issue of totally excluding the specified parts fraught with the danger of "mad cow disease" and the issue of legally stipulating the import of cattle younger than 30 months and kept mum about the poor U.S. quarantine system for distinguishing the age of cattle.
The Bar Association for a Democratic Society also called a press conference on June 22 at which it termed the authorities' additional negotiations on the beef import illegal.
The "government" allowed the introduction of the quality verifying system used in the U.S. into judging the quality of American beef, the organization noted, adding that this is little short of abandoning the right to quarantine.
It also declared the ambiguous fixing of the time limit for returning the cattle verified as cattle older than 30 months illegal.
It warned that if the "government" unilaterally enforces "official instructions" before verifying the above-said problems, it will amount to the violation of the regulation on announcing the enforcement of a legislature in advance.

Lee Myung Bak's Anti-Popular Policies Criticized in S. Korea

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- The second rally for denouncing traitor Lee Myung Bak's unpopular policies was held at the plaza of the Seoul City Office on June 22 with over 800 citizens from different walks of life attending.
Speeches were made by Pak Sang Phyo, chief for policy-making of the Solidarity of Veterinarians for People's Health, Kang Nam Hun, professor of the Economic Faculty of Hanshin University, Choe Sang Jae, chairman of the Trade Union of Men of the Press, Jong Thae In, economic critic, and others.
They charged that the Lee Myung Bak "government's" policies serve only for a handful of wealthy men while utterly ignoring the opinions of the overwhelming majority of the population.
Recalling that the contents of the additional negotiations on the import of American beef were peppered with watchwords to deceive the people, they said this proves that the Lee "government" is quite indifferent to the population's existence.
They held that Lee should accept the people's demand for renegotiations with the U.S. as early as possible.
Noting that the Lee Myung Bak traitorous group is scheming to appoint its stooges to the posts of chiefs of different broadcasting services, they warned that if such attempt is allowed, media to speak for the people would be endangered.

Candlelight Actions Unabated in S. Korea

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- A candlelight struggle to oppose the import of American beef and defend public broadcasting services was staged in Seoul of south Korea on June 23 with the attendance of citizens from all walks of life.
A meeting was held at the plaza of the Seoul City Office. Speakers there said that the results of the "government's" submissive and deceptive additional negotiations with the U.S. have made the people harden their determination to hold higher the candlelight. And they called for intensifying the candlelight action until Lee Myung Bak kneels down before the people and reflects on his wrongdoings.
The Lee group opposed all what the preceding regime did, but zealously hailed the negotiations for the conclusion of "Free Trade Agreement" with the U.S. only. And in a bid to ensure the successful conclusion of the agreement, the group led to a compromise settlement the negotiations for the import of American beef fraught with the danger of "mad cow disease." This clearly reveals its true colors as a pro-American group, they said.
Noting that the "government" is now undisguisedly manifesting its intention to block the candlelight struggle after the results of additional negotiations were announced, they declared that they would never stop the struggle to condemn the deceitfulness of the additional negotiations, the traitorous group's uninterrupted violent remarks against the participants of the candlelight struggle and distorted reports by conservative media.
Meanwhile, a woman was seriously violated by conservative gangsters during her one-man demonstration for defence of public broadcasting services outside the KBS office on the same day before being carried to hospital.
Upon hearing this accident, the participants of the said meeting staged a demonstration toward Youido, where the KBS is located, holding the candles of wrath.
After arriving at the spot, they removed the "sit-in strike tent" of a conservative organization in front of the KBS, stubbornly defying the police repression.

Messages of greetings to Kim Jong Il were adopted there.

Korean People's Struggle Supported

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- A regional organization and a Syrian figure issued statements on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration.
Marwan Sudah, chairman of the Arab Committee for Solidarity with Korean People and Supporting the Reunification of Korea headquartered in Jordan, in his statement on June 15 urged the south Korean authorities to respect the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and the October 4 Declaration and fully implement them.
He expressed full support and solidarity with the Korean people in their struggle to drive the U.S. forces out of south Korea and achieve the country's reunification.
Saber Ballul, department head of the Political Faculty of the University of Damascus, in his statement on June 14 stressed that the north-south joint declaration was adopted on June 15, 2000, making it possible for the north and south of Korea to greet the June 15 era of reunification, though they have been in the relationship of hostility for more than half a century.
He said the world peace-loving people are confident that the Korean people would surely put an end to the tragedy of division free from foreign interference and achieve national reunification.

Anniversary of Kim Jong Il's Start of Work at C.C., WPK Marked

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- Organizations of Brazil and Germany released bulletins on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of General Secretary Kim Jong Il's start of work at the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.
The Brazil-Korea Friendship Association in its bulletin on June 16 noted that Kim Jong Il who started his work at the C.C., WPK 40 odd years ago fully systematized the revolutionary idea of President Kim Il Sung on the basis of deep study and analysis of the preceding theory of the working class, thus providing guidelines guaranteeing the triumphant advance of the human cause of independence.
Saying that the Songun politics enforced by the DPRK is a typical example proving Kim Jong Il's distinguished political caliber, the bulletin stressed that the DPRK has greeted the dawn of a great prosperous powerful socialist nation today by making dynamic progress in the efforts to attain the above-said new high eminence thanks to his Songun politics, overcoming difficulties.
It noted that the DPRK formed a harmonious large family thanks to his benevolent politics.
The German Group for Study of Songun Politics carried articles titled "Invincible Workers' Party of Korea and Kim Jong Il", "Kimjongilia" and "Songun politics, a model of independent politics" and other articles in bulletin No. 3 in which it highly lauded the undying feats performed by Kim Jong Il before the party and the revolution, the country and the people and the human cause of independence.

Magazine "Korean Information" Off Press in Sweden

Pyongyang, June 25 (KCNA) -- The Sweden-Korea Friendship Association published magazine "Korean Information" No. 2 on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the publication of the historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration.
It carried photos of President Kim Il Sung and General Secretary Kim Jong Il and several articles.
The magazine under the title "President Kim Il Sung and People's Korea" referred in detail to the fact that the President defeated the Japanese imperialists and liberated the country, conducted energetic activities to put an end to the tragedy of national division brought by the U.S. imperialists' occupation of south Korea and built a genuine people's country in the Korean Peninsula.
The magazine under another title "Dark Clouds Hanging over Korean Peninsula" accused traitor Lee Myung Bak of getting frantic in his sycophancy toward the U.S. and anti-reunification moves as evidenced by the facts that he is keen on tightening the military alliance with the U.S. targeted against the DPRK and is totally negating the spirit of the historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and the October 4 Declaration and all achievements made in the inter-Korean relations in the past.
The magazine called upon all progressive people of the world to extend full support and solidarity to the Korean people in their struggle to thoroughly implement the June 15 joint declaration, frustrate the moves of the anti-reunification forces inside and outside Korea and achieve the independent and peaceful reunification of the country.
It also edited articles disclosing the aggressive and unreasonable nature of the hostile policy pursued by the U.S. and Japan toward the DPRK.
