Kanggye Spirit Sparks off Flames of New Great Revolutionary Upsurge
Pyongyang, January 17 (KCNA) -- The DPRK has made a victorious advance, breaking through difficulties lying in chronicles in the great spirit of the times.
This is eloquently illustrated by the Kanggye spirit that kindled the flames of a new great revolutionary upsurge in the DPRK when its people had to make an "Arduous March" and a forced march previously unknown due to natural disasters that hit it for several consecutive years and the U.S. imperialists' moves to isolate and stifle it.
In those days when the country was standing at the crossroads of life and death, Kim Jong Il unfolded a far-reaching blueprint to cut the Gordian knot on the pattern of Jagang Province which had shared the destiny with the revolutionary headquarters in each period of ordeals.
Immensely inspired by the trust shown by him in pushing them to the foreground of the era, the people of Jagang Province registered miraculous successes. They built or reinforced dozens of minor power stations in a little more than six months and operated hundreds of local industry factories and provided tens of thousands of families with lighting with the electric power generated by them.
He visited Kanggye in January Juche 87 (1998) when a new wave of innovation was sweeping Jagang Province and made a tour of over 6 000 ri in a few days for on-the-spot guidance in defiance of the intense cold of midwinter.
Going round minor power stations and a number of industrial establishments bearing the marks of the fighting spirit and sweat of provincial people, he said the people of Jagang Province had shown with practical examples how one should uphold the Party in such hard times as those days. He named their fighting spirit "Kanggye spirit" and made the whole country learn from it.
Raging waves of a new great revolutionary upswing rolled over the whole country when the Kanggye spirit, an embodiment of the revolutionary soldier spirit, was spreading over the society with great influence and attraction.
The devoted struggle of the working class across the country brought back to normal operation in 1999 thousands of industrial establishments which had been lying dead nationwide and many of them overfulfilled their annual plans.
Large-scale salterns including the Kwangmyongsong Saltern were laid out in the east coast and power stations cropped up everywhere. The Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway of natural flow, which had been said to take more than 10 years, was completed in a little over two years and crop fields extending hundreds of thousands of hectares were rezoned into standardized ones. These were miracles never known in the national history of fifty centuries.
The Kanggye spirit that made the flames of a new great revolutionary upsurge flare up in the Songun era is powerfully rousing the Korean people in the general offensive to glory this year as a year of historical turn.
Art Performance Given
Kanggye, January 16 (KCNA) -- An art performance "Let's glorify place frequented by General" was held at the art theatre in Jagang Province on Wednesday on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of on-the-spot guidance to Jagang Province given by Kim Jong Il.
The curtain was raised with chorus "Glory to General." Put on the stage were colorful numbers including chorus "We Will Never Forget Those Days" praising the immortal leadership exploits Kim Jong Il performed by giving on-the-spot guidance to Jagang Province in the coldest days 10 years ago to encourage the people of the province to create the Kanggye spirit and bring about a great change and female solo "Snow Falls on Road to Front".
In women's duet "Bright Light on the Jangja River", dance "Chollima Forging Worker" and other numbers the performers truthfully represented the do-or-die spirit and persevering will to implement the Party policies displayed by the workers and other people of Jagang Province when building a lot of power stations and factories and turning cities and villages into a socialist land of bliss. They also successfully represented the faith and will to eternally glorify the land of Jagang frequented by Kim Jong Il in mixed trio "For Better Morrow", male chorus "Let's Advance Faster for a Higher Goal" and other pieces.
Brisk Agitation for Increased Production
Pyongyang, January 17 (KCNA) -- Working people's organizations are dynamically conducting frontline-style agitation activities for increased production to encourage the working people in the efforts for implementing the joint New Year editorial to a fresh leap forward.
The art squad of workers of the Central Committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea conducted its agitation activities in coal mines under the Sunchon Area Youth Coal Complex in South Phyongan Province, giving a helping hand to coal-miners.
The Youth Central Art Propaganda Team waged its brisk agitation activities at coal mines in Kangdong area of Pyongyang and Kangso area of South Phyongan Province to arouse the coal-miners to the increased coal production.
The art squad of the Central Committee of the Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea launched its agitation activities in Kumchon Farm in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, to encourage the agricultural workers in making preparations for farming this year.
The art squad of the Central Committee of the Korean Democratic Women's Union has been conducting its activities of agitation composed of colorful numbers at different units in Pothonggang District, Pyongyang.
Comprehensive Korean Dictionary Sees Light
Pyongyang, January 17 (KCNA) -- A Comprehensive Korean Dictionary (three volumes) has been recently published. It was written and compiled by researchers of the Linguistic Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences and journalists and editors of the Social Science Publishing House to convey to the posterity the Pyongyang cultured language developed and enriched in line with the requirement of the Songun era.
The dictionary contains a vocabulary of over 402,000 words.
It is a Korean language interpretation dictionary issued for the first time in the new century. It has amended all aspects of the Comprehensive Korean Dictionary (two volumes) published in Juche 81 (1992) and supplemented more than 70,000 lemmas to the former.
The new one gives words, set-phrases, idioms, proverbs and others which are being or had been used in the linguistic life of the Koreans.
Also contained in it are the vernacular and socio-political words and scientific terms widely used by the Korean people and words associated with world-famous historical events, incidents, relics, remains, etc.
Press Conference at Cuban Embassy
Pyongyang, January 17 (KCNA) -- A press conference took place at the Cuban embassy here on Thursday in connection with the election of deputies to the National Assembly of People's Power and deputies to the provincial assemblies to be held in Cuba on Jan. 20.
Present there were media persons here.
Enrique Montoto Cruz, charge d'affaires ad interim of the embassy here, addressing the conference, informed of the achievements made in the Cuban revolution last year and the composition of candidate deputies registered for the election.
He answered the questions raised by reporters.
Memorial Service for Pak Jong Chol Held in S. Korea
Pyongyang, January 17 (KCNA) -- A memorial service for Pak Jong Chol, who was a student of Seoul National University, took place in a park in Namyangju City, Kyonggi Province, on January 12 with the lapse of 21 years since he was tortured to death by fascist executioners, according to KBS of south Korea.
Attending the service were civic and social organizations of various circles including the Society to Honor the Memory of Martyr Pak Jong Chol.
Speakers at the service said that the spirit of martyrs for the progress and democracy of the society should be inherited in the future, too.
Unwarranted Legal Action Taken against S. Korean Media Man
Pyongyang, January 17 (KCNA) -- The south Korean prosecution authorities on Jan. 10 demanded 10 years in jail and 10 years of suspension of qualification for media man Ri Si U on the charge of violation of the "National Security Law (NSL)" and decided to confiscate all his works and photos, according to a press report.
Ri Si U in his pleading strongly demanded the repeal of the NSL, stating that what he did was based on freedom of expression and conscience.
Ri has been on a demonstration demanding the withdrawal of the evil law, traveling all parts of south Korea since Dec. 3 last year.

Kanggye, 16 de enero (ATCC) -- Con motivo del 10o aniversario de la direccion en el terreno sobre la provincia de Jagang por el Dirigente Kim Jong Il, quedo inaugurada el dia 16 en esta ciudad la galeria de fotos "10 anos de gran direccion".
En la sede del evento salta a la vista una gran foto de iluminacion electrica en que aparecen el Presidente Kim Il Sung y el Dirigente Kim Jong Il dirigiendo la Tienda de Articulos Industriales de Jonchon.
Igualmente, se ven mas de 180 ejemplares que demuestran las inmortales hazanas de direccion del Dirigente quien dio inicio a la historia de grandes cambios en el suelo de Jagang y los exitos de los habitantes de esta provincia.
En la ceremonia inaugural participaron el secretario responsable del Comite del Partido del Trabajo de Corea en la provincia de Jagang, Pak To Chun, el presidente del Comite Central de la Federacion General de Escritores y Artistas de Corea, Kim Pyong Hun, y otros funcionarios, los directivos de organos del partido y el Poder, entidades de masas, fabricas y empresas asi como trabajadores provinciales.
Funcion en homenaje a visita de Kim Jong Il a provincia de Jagang
Kanggye, 16 de enero (ATCC) -- En ocasion del decimo aniversario de la orientacion en el terreno sobre la provincia de Jagang por el Dirigente Kim Jong Il, se ofrecio la vispera en el Teatro de Arte Provincial la funcion artistica denominada "Acondicionemos magnificamente esta tierra entranable del General".
El espectaculo, que descorrio su telon con el coro "Gloria al General", tuvo en su repertorio varias piezas como el coro "Nunca lo olvidaremos" y el solo femenino "Cae la nieve en el camino al frente", que alaban las imborrables proezas del Dirigente Kim Jong Il quien al dirigir sobre el terreno hace 10 anos la provincia de Jagang cuando hacia un frio cortante, estimulo a los habitantes locales a crear el espiritu de Kanggye y a producir grandes cambios.
En el duo femenino "Mar de luces en el rio Jangja" y el baile "Forjador de Chollima" los ejecutantes interpretaron excelentemente la indoblegable voluntad y el espiritu de la clase obrera y los habitantes de dicha provincia de ejecutar a costa de la vida las politicas del partido, quienes construyeron numerosas centrales hidroelectricas y otras fabricas y convirtieron sus ciudades y aldeas en un paraiso socialista.
Otros programas, entre otros, el trio mixto "Hacia un futuro mejor" y el pequeno coro masculino "A lo mas alto y mas rapido" mostraron la fe y la voluntad de acondicionar magnificamente la provincia de Jagang, tierra entranable del Dirigente.
