New Era of Reunification and Prosperity Will Come in 2008
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The Korean people are aflame with the zeal to open up a new era of independent reunification and peace and prosperity by joining efforts of the whole nation in response to the joint New Year editorial.
The slogan of the joint editorial "Open up a new era of independent reunification and peace and prosperity by pooling the efforts of our nation!" indicates correct and realistic direction and way of this year's struggle for national reunification whereby to thoroughly implement the October 4 declaration under the banner of "by our nation itself" set forth in the June 15 joint declaration.
Through the past history and reality the Korean people have felt in their fiber that independent reunification and peace and prosperity are quite possible only if all the compatriots in the north, the south and abroad are determined.
An Kyong Ho, director of the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, told KCNA that the north-south relations dating back to the opening of the June 15 era of reunification had laid the foundation of national reunification and prosperity, promoting the reconciliation and unity of the nation and rejoining the veins of blood and land in the past years in the spirit of "by our nation itself". The call of the joint editorial to open up a new era of independent reunification and peace and prosperity, he added, is an entirely just and realistic one representing the unanimous purpose and desire of the fellow countrymen.
U Yong Gak, an unconverted long-term prisoner, expressed his firm conviction that victory is certain when the Korean nation goes along the road of independent reunification indicated by Kim Jong Il, saying: The Korean people have been strong in the spirit of unity and pooled their efforts, wisdom and intelligence in the fight to achieve national independence from old times.
Cha Son Mo, chief of staff of the Ministry of Land and Marine Transport, said the struggle for national reunification is still arduous and rigorous, but its victory is definite. He went on:
The work for the development of the inter-Korean relations and peace and prosperity is important in shaping the destiny of our nation. The Korean nation should carry it out independently, assuming the principal role.
Kim Thaek Bong, a section chief of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland, told KCNA that the Koreans are facing the important and honorable task to open up a new era of independent reunification and peace and prosperity.
It is high time, he stressed, all the Koreans fulfilled their obligation and role in the noble patriotic struggle for accelerating the cause of independent reunification, closely united in the spirit of "by our nation itself" for national reunification, the great cause of the nation.
Scientists Resolve to Do Their Share in Building of Economic Power
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Kim Sa Myong, director of the Control Machine Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, had an interview with KCNA in the new year. He said: We will strive harder with a bold goal to reach in a short span of time the high eminence that others had taken scores of years to hit and thus celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK with big successes in scientific research.
In response to the call of the joint New Year editorial, the scientists and technicians have set to work with a firm resolution to make a substantial contribution to the building of an economic power from the beginning of the year.
In order to solve the food problem of the people at the earliest date as called by the joint editorial, the Academy of Agricultural Science is holding various seminars and presentation meetings including scientific conception presentation and is putting spurs to the research into high-yielding varieties and, at the same time, is dispatching scientists to co-op farms to inform farmers of advanced farming technique and methods.
Scientists in the Branch Academy of Railway Science under the State Academy of Sciences have found themselves in the Ministry of Railways, Pyongyang Passenger and Freight Car Corps, Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Plant and other units. They are making positive efforts to expedite the modernization of rail transport, solving issues arising in the putting of operation and command on a scientific basis, the stream-line production of highly efficient electric locomotives and freight wagons and in the manufacture of facilities and devices for raising the rail strength.

More Mass Rallies Held
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Mass rallies to vow to thoroughly carry out the militant tasks set forth in the joint New Year editorial for this year were held in Jagang Province, North Hwanghae Province, North Hamgyong Province and Ryanggang Province.
They were attended by leading officials of the party and power organs and economic institutions and working people's organizations and people from all walks of life and youth and students in local areas.
The reporters and speakers at the rallies said that the general march for this year is a sacred struggle to bring about a new turn in materializing the plan of Kim Jong Il for building a great prosperous powerful nation.

"Complete Collection of Kim Il Sung's Works" Vol. 73 Off Press
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The Workers' Party of Korea Publishing House brought out "Complete Collection of Kim Il Sung's Works" Vol. 73, a library of the immortal Juche idea systematically and comprehensively dealing with famous works of President Kim Il Sung in chronological order.
The book contains 44 speeches, concluding speeches, talks and others the President made during the period from January to July Juche 70 (1981).
The President set forth a revolutionary policy for socialist economic development and the improvement of the people's standard of living and indicated concrete tasks to be fulfilled to implement it and ways to do so in the works including "On Comprehensively Developing the Hydropower Resources", "Let Us Thoroughly Implement the Taean Work System and Improve the Management of Factories," "On Some Measures to Improve the People's Standard of Living" and "On Staging a Vigorous Struggle to Increase the Grain Production".
In the work "Members of the Children's Union, Prepare Yourselves as Strong Heirs to the Juche Revolutionary Cause", the President called for improving and strengthening the work of the Children's Union and further developing the children's movement in the DPRK as required by the developing revolution.
"Talk to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania", "Answers to Questions Raised by the Chinese Xinhua News Agency Delegation" and other works clarify the principled stand maintained by the WPK in the struggle to achieve the independent and peaceful reunification of the country and develop the non-aligned movement and ways to do so.
The book also clarifies the issues of improving quality control, developing Mt. Myohyang into a recreation ground for the school youth and children and working people and further developing the democratic national education of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan and other theoretical and practical matters arising in the revolution and construction.
Japan's Revision of Guidelines for Operation of Missile Shield Termed Dangerous
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Japan has recently revised the "guidelines for emergency measures" for the operation of the missile shield to enable the defence minister to directly issue an order for intercepting missiles instead of the prime minister.
Rodong Sinmun Wednesday in a signed commentary terms this a very dangerous military measure as it is aimed at increasing the danger of war in Asia and gravely threatening its peace.
It goes on:
The recent measure taken by Japan is not designed to "protect" Japan from someone's "missile threat."
The Japanese militarist forces have become so emboldened that they are now fully ready for making a preemptive strike at other countries any time they want. Herein lie the danger and aggressive nature of the measure taken by the Japanese reactionaries to simplify the system whereby to issue an order for intercepting missiles.
The military measures taken by Japan under the pretext of someone's "missile threat" are, in essence, aimed at realizing its criminal scenario to establish military supremacy in Asia-Pacific and put into practice its wild ambition for reinvasion. The DPRK is made its primary target. Such military moves as the forward-deployment of "SM-3" and the above-said simplifying measure stepped up by the Japanese reactionaries are designed to make a preemptive missile strike at the DPRK.
Japan had better drop its foolish ambition to realize its old dream of "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" through overseas military invasion.
All Koreans Called upon to Struggle for Lasting Peace
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- It is an important realistic task for national reunification and prosperity to remove the source of war from the Korean Peninsula and achieve its durable peace.
Rodong Sinmun Wednesday says this in a signed article.
It goes on:
The constant danger of war on the peninsula has brought really great misfortune and pain and mental and material losses to the Korean nation, threatening and hampering its existence and development.
The United States is still escalating its military threat and pressure upon the DPRK while employing "carrot and stick." The south Korean hawks, its followers, are getting frantic with the anti-DPRK military rackets, going busy with the development and introduction of new type weapons and reorganizing military command system under the pretext of coping with "provocations" and "threat".
Last year alone, the U.S. was busy with madcap war exercises all the year round after transferring means for preemptive nuclear strike to south Korea from its mainland and its overseas bases to keep them ready to go into action.
All Koreans in the north and the south and overseas who love the country and the nation and love peace should pool efforts and wage a dynamic struggle for peace against war in order to frustrate the moves of the trigger-happy elements at home and abroad for a war of aggression.
In order to achieve durable peace on the peninsula it is necessary to liquidate historical and realistic elements disturbing peace and creating the danger of war.
The U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK is the principal source of war of aggression against the north on the peninsula.
Unceasing large joint military war exercises, arms build-up and transfer and expansion of U.S. forces bases in south Korea are the greatest potential danger of war of aggression against the north.
Whether to remove the danger of war from this land and achieve durable peace or not entirely depends on the efforts of the Koreans, concludes the article.
Rash Act of Security Authorities Denounced in S. Korea
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration reportedly issued a statement on January 3, demanding that the security authorities withdraw at once the definition of "enemy-benefiting" given to the south Korean Federation of University Student Councils and immediately set free its Chairman Ryu Son Min.
The statement said that the definition of "enemy-benefiting" upon the federation is as good as defining the June 15 joint declaration as "enemy-benefiting," and crackdown upon the federation is regarded as a heinous crime intended to strangle the future of the nation.
The authorities should abrogate the "National Security Law" (NSL) and fully adjust the legal and institutional mechanisms in favor of the development of the south-north relations and national reunification, it held.
Meanwhile, students under the federation and members of various civic and public organizations called a press conference in Seoul on January 2, denouncing the security authorities for having walked away the chairman of the 15th-term federation.
A statement read out at the conference said: The authorities should abrogate the NSL, disband the security machines and withdraw the definition of "enemy-benefiting" from the federation and the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification as now is a new era for independent reunification, peace and prosperity.
DPRK's Joint New Year Editorial Hailed in Britain
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The British Association for the Study of Songun Policy and the British Group for the Study of the Juche Idea released a joint statement on Jan. 1 in support of the joint New Year editorial published by newspapers of the party, the army and the youth league in the DPRK.
The statement noted that the joint editorial put forward the revolutionary and militant tasks to be carried out in socialist construction by the Korean people on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the DPRK.
The foundation of the DPRK was a historic event which made the Korean people an independent and mighty, revolutionary people and marked the beginning of the building of a socialist state centered on the popular masses, and it was a significant occasion to the progressives of the world struggling for global independence and socialism, it said.
The statement stressed that they fully support the joint editorial calling for steadily increasing the military strength of the DPRK by holding fast to the Songun-based revolutionary line and pursuing the people's-living-first policy.
Meanwhile, Bonakele Majuba, secretary of the Mfumalanga Provincial Committee of the South African Communist Party and chairman of the South African Association of Friendship and Solidarity with Korean People, released a statement on Jan. 4 in support of the joint New Year editorial.

Pyongyang, 9 de enero (ATCC) -- El editorial conjunto de Ano Nuevo hizo redoblar al pueblo coreano su determinacion de dar inicio a una nueva epoca de la reunificacion independiente, la paz y la prosperidad con las fuerzas unidas de todos los coterraneos.
La consigna indicada en el editorial "!Unidos nosotros, los connacionales, abramos la nueva epoca de la reunificacion independiente, la paz y la prosperidad!" aclara el rumbo y remedios de la lucha del presente ano por la reunificacion de la patria a fin de ejecutar de modo consecuente la Declaracion del 4 de Octubre, en acato al ideal de "Entre nosotros, los connacionales" formulado en la Declaracion Conjunta Norte-Sur del 15 de Junio.
La historia transcurrida y las practicas vividas hicieron sentir en carne propia a todos los coreanos del Norte, el Sur y en ultramar que son del todo posible la reunificacion independiente, la paz y la prosperidad si proceden a alcanzarlas identificando sus voluntades.

Cientificos se movilizan en construccion de potencia economica
Pyongyang, 9 de enero (ATCC) -- "Me esforzare tesoneramente con la ambiciosa meta de subir de una vez a la altura a la que llegaron otros en decenios para acoger con gran exito de investigacion cientifica el 60o aniversario de la fundacion de la Republica Popular Democratica de Corea."
Dijo asi Kim Sa Myong, jefe del Instituto de Maquinas de Manejo de la Academia Estatal de Ciencias, a una reportera de la Agencia Telegrafica Central de Corea.
Ahora los cientificos y tecnicos de Corea, enterados del editorial conjunto de los periodicos Rodong Sinmun, Joson Inmingun y Chongnyon Jonwi publicado con motivo del Ano Nuevo, dieron primer paso agigantado con la firme determinacion de contribuir realmente a la construccion de la potencia economica.
A fin de cumplir cabalmente las tareas indicadas en el editorial conjunto de solucionar lo mas pronto posible el problema de viveres y de alimento para el pueblo, los miembros de la Academia de Ciencia Agricola organizan varios seminarios y simposios incluidos la reunion de presentacion de ideas de innovacion cientifica y dan acicate a la labor de investigacion sobre variedades de alto rendimiento. Los cientificos del Instituto de Automatizacion de la Academia Estatal de Ciencias, bien conscientes de la importancia de su mision en el desarrollo economico, dan espuelas a la labor de investigacion para la produccion en serie de los elementos automaticos de punta.
Por otra parte, los cientificos del Instituto de Ingenieria Mecanica de la Academia Estatal de Ciencias desarrollaron la nueva maquina compresiva de paja de arroz y amplian sus exitos.
Tambien, el Instituto de Geologia preparo una nueva base firme para explotar y utilizar con eficiencia los recursos mineros del pais dando un gran estimulo a los trabajadores que se esfuerzan por la materializacion de las tareas presentadas en el editorial conjunto de Ano Nuevo.
Rodong Sinmun comenta cambio de modo de defensa antimisil en Japon
Pyongyang, 9 de enero (ATCC) -- Ultimamente, Japon enmendo el "programa de reaccion emergente" de la operacion de defensa antimisil, de modo que el ministro de Defensa pueda ordenar directamente la interceptacion, lo cual fue posible antes bajo la autorizacion del primer ministro.
Esta medida militar muy peligrosa resulta un acto criminal que acrecienta el peligro de guerra y amenaza gravemente la paz en la region asiatica.
Asi senala el diario Rodong Sinmun en un comentario individual de este miercoles y continua:
Esa medida no se adopto para "proteger" a Japon desde la "amenaza de misil" de alguien.
Al tomarla, las fuerzas militaristas japonesas ya bastante osadas ultimaron sus preparativos para atacar preventivamente a otros paises cuando les de la gana. He aqui el caracter agresivo y peligroso de esa simplificacion de los tramites para ordenar la interceptacion de misiles.
Las medidas militares que toman los reaccionarios japoneses bajo el pretexto de la supuesta "amenaza de misil" parten de su criminal intencion de emprender de nuevo el camino de agresion despues de tomar la hegemonia militar en la region de Asia-Pacifico.
En particular, ellos persiguen el ataque preventivo con misiles a la Republica Popular Democratica de Corea, que resulta su primer blanco, y en este sentido, emplazan para el combate real el misil "SM-3", aparte de susodicha medida.
Japon debe abandonar su estupida ambicion de realizar a toda costa su largamente acariciado sueno de la "esfera de coprosperidad de gran Asia Oriental" con la agresion militarista a ultramar.
