Noting that no enemy can ever attack the DPRK as long as it is led by Kim Jong Il, the great king gave assurances that Cambodia would always throw support behind the Korean people in their struggle to achieve national reunification and build a great prosperous powerful nation and Cambodia and its people would remain their permanent friend, he added.

The athletes competed in 30-odd events including football, basketball, volleyball, boxing and judo.

The DPRK Championships made a great contribution to developing the overall sports technique of the country.

Temperature Rises in Late Autumn

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- Fruit trees are blossoming in South Hwanghae Province and other parts of the country in late autumn.
Pear trees have blossomed white in some districts of Pyongyang, which leads people to "seasonal confusion".
According to Associate Professor and Master O Myong Sok of the Animal Preservation Association under the DPRK Natural Conservation Union, the flowering of fruit trees before the winter sleep is discussed among scientists in an aspect of global environment.
The global warming, which has been raised as a serious problem in the world, also brings about an adverse effect to the DPRK.
Heavy frost used to fall across the country in the latter part of October every year.
But the average temperature of the country was 9.3 degrees centigrade towards the end of October this year, 1.9 degrees centigrade higher than usual, and that of the Pyongyang area was 11.1 degrees centigrade.
Owing to the temperature rise this time, fruit trees open flowers before entering winter sleep and birds including magpie are making nests.
The DPRK has taken measures for protecting environment prior to production and done the territorial and environmental protection work on the principle of thoroughly preventing the environmental pollution. But the aftereffect of the global warming seen in the country has been caused by the fact that large amounts of carbon dioxide has been emitted throughout the world to harshly destroy the global ecological environment.

Bird with Identification Ring Found out in Korea

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- A bird with an identification ring attached to its leg was found out recently on the seashore of Kalma Peninsula of Wonsan City, Kangwon Province of the DPRK.
It was among the flock of birds on rocks of the peninsula.
Associate Professor and Master O Myong Sok, 71, of the Animal Preservation Association under the DPRK Natural Conservation Union, said that it is a Great Cormorant, a kind of cormorant.
Its upper bill is 65 mm long, wing 350 mm, tail 195 mm and the length of the spread wing is 1,230 mm.
Inscribed in the ring are the letters "Russian Identification Ring Center" and "B-322344."
The Great Cormorant inhabits the northern part of Korea and Far East of Russia, especially Maritime Province. It sees winter through in Korea when other kinds of birds fly southward.

Fully Play to Spirit of National Self-Esteem Called for

Pyongyang, November 4 (KCNA) --The Koreans should fully display the spirit of national self-esteem as a dignified and excellent nation in the movement for the reunification of the country as it is accompanied by the confrontation with the United States keen to keep the Korean Peninsula divided into two and dominate it.
Rodong Sinmun Sunday observes this in a by-lined article.
    It goes on:
The Koreans have the spirit of self-esteem stronger than any other nations as it is based on their excellent national character.
The national character which has been consolidated throughout the Korean nation's history spanning more than 5000 years reflects the spirit of national independence and brilliant tradition of culture. The Korean nation has been known to be a nation strong in patriotism and the spirit of independence since the olden times.
The Koreans' strong spirit of national self-esteem has served as one of the important factors that enabled them to firmly preserve their national character in any severe test of history.
Now under way on the Korean Peninsula is a decisive final struggle between the fellow countrymen in the north and the south who work hard to defend the security and peace of the country and achieve national reunification by their concerted efforts and the anti-reunification forces at home and abroad who challenge their efforts. This precisely means the confrontation between the Koreans equipped with the spirit of self-esteem and the foreign forces keen to quell it.
The U.S. evermore reckless efforts to dampen the Koreans' desire for reunification only reinforce their spirit of self-esteem to successfully carve out the future of the country and the nation by themselves, regarding national independence as their life and soul.
The Koreans' high pride and honor of holding leader Kim Jong Il, peerless great man, in high esteem as the sun of the nation and the resulting strong spirit of national self-esteem serve as an inexhaustible source of ardent patriotic zeal and fighting spirit to achieve reunification, concludes the article.

Rodong Sinmun Terms "Three Non-Nuclear Principles" Hypocritical

Pyongyang, November 4 (KCNA) -- Japan's "three non-nuclear principles" remain in name only and are nothing but window-dressing to cover up its wild ambition for nuclear weaponization.
Rodong Sinmun Sunday says this in a signed article.
The Japanese authorities pulled the wool over the eyes of the international community, talking a lot about those "principles", but they have frantically pushed ahead with the moves to turn Japan into a nuclear base and its nuclear weaponization, the article notes, and goes on:
The Japanese reactionaries noisily tout the above-said "principles" as a decoration advertising what they called "peaceful stand" but none of them reflect it.
The hypocrisy of the "three non-nuclear principles" is clearly evidenced by the fact that Japan has turned into a nuclear base of the U.S.
There is a "regime" between Japan and the U.S. whereby one side should have a prior consultation with the other side when shipping nukes into the Japanese territory. But the Japanese government has never exercised its right to inspect U.S. warships entering Japanese ports whether they carry nuclear weapons or not.
At the tacit connivance of the Japanese government and under its patronage U.S. warships and planes carrying nukes frequent Japan with a "prior consultation" as a subterfuge.
The hypocrisy of these "principles" also finds its expression in the fact that Japan worked out a plan for nuclear weaponization and has since pushed it forward as a state policy.
Japan's ambition to go nuclear is clearly proved by the fact that the Japanese Foreign Ministry worked out a confidential document calling for acquiring the "capability to manufacture nuclear weapons" as early as in 1969.
Japan had more than 50 nuclear power plants as of the end of 1998 churning out nuclear waste enough to produce a lot of plutonium every year. Not content with this, Japan has purchased a huge amount of plutonium from Britain and France for years.
Japan's technology of manufacturing nukes and developing delivery means have reached the world's top level.
The Japanese reactionaries are keen to make an effective use of nukes for realizing their wild ambition for overseas expansion, thinking that Japan suffered a defeat after invading other Asian countries because it was weak and had no nuclear weapons.
They would be well advised to stop flouting the international community with those hypocritical "principles."

61st Anniversary of UNESCO Marked

Pyongyang, November 4 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 61st anniversary of UNESCO. Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article dedicated to this day notes that it has played a great role in boosting cooperation among countries in the fields of education, science and culture and consolidating world peace and security in conformity with its objective and mission.
    It goes on:
UNESCO is now performing its mission at the desired level as an important intellectual organization of the world aimed at promoting and coordinating the development in different fields including education, science and culture through the course of implementing its mid-term strategy. Its role is regarded more important in the international arena.
The DPRK has striven hard to perform its duty as a member state of UNESCO since it joined the organization on October 18, 1974. The DPRK is energetically conducting the work to place different fields including education, science and culture on a higher stage as required by the new century under the leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea. It has channeled efforts into consolidating the universal 11-year compulsory education system, improving the quality of education and developing latest science and technology. The DPRK, at the same time, has taken practical measures to preserve the national cultural heritages and folk tradition. It has paid due attention to the cooperation with UNESCO.
The activities of UNESCO for social progress, cultural diversity and human civilization and development will be intensified, concludes the article.

All Koreans Called upon to Stand up against Foreign Interference

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- The United States is chiefly to blame for the split of the Korean nation as it was imposed upon the nation by the foreign forces. Foreign interference and obstructions are, therefore, a stumbling block lying in the way of accomplishing the cause of independent national reunification.
Rodong Sinmun Saturday says this in a by-lined article.
    It goes on:
The United States keeps its aggression troops in south Korea even now when the June 15 era of reunification has been opened up, threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula and security of the nation and persistently hamstringing the efforts to achieve the cause of Korean reunification.
The U.S. split the Korean nation into two parts by occupying south Korea under the pretext of "disarming" the Japanese imperialists to meet its aggressive interests in the mid-twentieth century. The U.S. imperialists' occupation of south Korea was a serious infringement upon the sovereignty of the Korean nation. It is bringing untold misfortune and pain to the Koreans even in the new century.
The U.S. interference and obstructive moves against the cause of the reunification of Korea are grave provocations as they infringe upon the sovereign rights of the Koreans.
The issue of reunification of Korea is a matter to be settled by its people themselves as it is related to the sovereignty of the nation. It is, therefore, a matter pertaining to the nation's right to self-determination from A to Z because it does not allow any foreign forces to meddle in it.
The U.S. has openly stood in the way of implementing the June 15 joint declaration, displeased with it, though it reflects the strong will of the Korean nation to independently carve out its destiny.
The U.S. interference and obstructive moves against national reunification amount to deliberate moves for aggression as they are aimed at dividing and alienating Koreans.
The U.S. cunning separatist methods no longer work on the Korean nation. Precisely for this reason, the U.S. is driving the anti-reunification forces in south Korea to confrontation with fellow countrymen and a war against the north, while talking about "dialogue" and "peace."
To depend on foreign forces instead of working hard to independently settle the issue of the country's reunification, the internal issue of the nation, in actuality, means opposing national reunification.

Rodong Sinmun on Single-Minded Unity of Revolutionary Ranks

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- Single-minded unity of the revolutionary ranks of the DPRK around Kim Jong Il is the most solid unity, a harmonious whole that can be found in the DPRK only as it is based on the monolithic ideology and united action.
Rodong Sinmun Saturday says this in a signed article.
The single-minded unity of the DPRK has grown stronger as it has become unbreakable thanks to the Songun politics pursued by Kim Jong Il, the article notes, and goes on:
Kim Jong Il, shouldering upon himself the destiny of the country, the nation and socialism, has consistently pursued the unique Songun politics to cope with the rigorous situation created on the road of the Korean revolution, powerfully arousing the army and people to the dynamic struggle for defending socialism.
He, possessed of clairvoyant insight and strategy, set it as the top priority task to boost the national defence capability, regarding attaching importance to military affairs as the most important state affair, a crucial matter related to the destiny of the country and socialism in the DPRK.
He boldly pulled through trials and difficulties lying in the way of the revolution, taking rice-balls and having short and uncomfortable sleep while making long journeys for Songun at a time when the country and the nation stood at the crossroads of rise or fall due to the imperialists' moves.
This patriotic policy pursued by him during his journeys to dedicate himself to defending and advancing socialism under such difficult situation that prevailed in the country resulted in turning the relations between the leader and the army and the people into the unbreakable blood ties and making the whole society a great family.
The servicepersons intensely loyal to him have performed feats in defending the country and building socialism under the militant slogan that they will take charge not only of the country's defence but of socialist construction in the spirit of waging an uncompromised struggle against the enemy and with boundless love and dedication to the country, the people and socialism. It was in this course that miracles and innovations startling the world were wrought in the DPRK.
Kim Jong Il represents the destiny of the country, the people and socialism in the DPRK and a symbol of all victories, the article notes, adding that his Songun politics serves as an all-powerful treasured sword and a banner of sure victory.

73rd Meeting for Peace and Disarmament Held in S. Korea

Pyongyang, November 4 (KCNA) -- The People for Achieving Peace and Reunification of south Korea reportedly held the 73rd meeting for peace and disarmament in Seoul on October 29 at which it disclosed the deceptive nature of the moves to "transfer the right to control the wartime operations."
The speakers at the meeting referred to the fact that the commander of the U.S. air force present in south Korea would have the right to command the "combined air space center" which the U.S. and south Korean authorities agreed to set up, pursuant to the "plan for the transfer of the right to control the wartime operations."
They accused the U.S. forces side of declaring that the commander of the U.S. air force would exercise the above-said right of command till the south Korean air force has acquired the "capacity to command and control operations" without setting the clear deadline for exercising the above-said right of command, thus revealing that the U.S. has, in fact, no will to transfer the air force's "right to control wartime operations."
This prompts one to draw a conclusion that the missile defense system (MD) pushed forward by the south Korean army authorities will be part of the MD of the U.S. in the final analysis.
They urged the army authorities to withdraw the plan for setting up the "combined air space center" likely to make south Korea's relations with the U.S. increasingly dependent upon it and immediately discontinue the moves to establish the MD, a threat to the peace on the Korean Peninsula and the rest of Northeast Asia.

S. Korean Judicial Authorities Suppress Activists of All-People Movement

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- The Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office detained and prosecuted Pak Sok Un, executive co-chairman of the Headquarters of the All-People Movement for Checking the Conclusion of the south Korea-U.S. "Free Trade Agreement", and Ju Je Jun, its room chief, on October 29, according to KBS of south Korea.
The judicial authorities were reported to have taken this action against them on charges of violation of the clause on "illegal meetings" stipulated in the "National Security Law" for the mere reason that they spearheaded meetings protesting against the conclusion of the "FTA" from July last year to March this year including the "November 22 action for arousing all people to turn out" in the struggle for the same purpose.

End to Pro-U.S. Sycophantic Policy Demanded in S. Korea

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- The South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification reportedly issued a statement on October 29 in which it declared that it would put an end to the pro-U.S. sycophantic policy and surely ensure that a progressive policy for peace, prosperity and reunification is pursued as desired by the people through a great struggle of the people.
Recalling that Jong Hae Jin, unionist of Yongjin Electric Company in Inchon, burnt himself to death on October 27 in protest against the suppression of the trade union by the company side, the statement stressed that it would make the soul of martyrs who laid down their lives for the right to existence serve as a torch for the people's liberation.
The statement called upon the people from all walks of life to unite close as one under the uplifted banner of "By our nation itself" in order to put an end to the U.S. colonial rule and interference and win the people's right to existence, democracy and civil rights at an early date.

Rash Acts of Lawmakers from GNP Denounced

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- South Korean civic and public organizations including the Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration reportedly called a press conference in Seoul on October 29 at which they denounced the rash acts of corrupt gentries of the Grand National Party of south Korea.
The speakers at the conference blasted the sexual scandals of lawmakers from the GNP who took part in the "inspection of state administration."
They charged that the people are becoming vocal criticizing the GNP as the party engrossed in sexual crimes as not only its representative but lawmakers and presidential candidate from the party are free to commit sexual scandals and make reckless remarks insulting women and perpetrate sexual abuses.
They demanded Ri Myong Bak apologize for the despicable behavior of lawmakers from GNP before the people and withdraw his presidential candidacy.
At the end of the conference they conveyed a protest letter to the GNP.

U.S. Deploys Guided Missile Destroyers in S. Korea

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- A guided missile destroyer belonging to the Navy of the U.S. imperialist aggression forces anchored at Phyongthaek Port in the wake of the arrival of a guided missile destroyer at the East Sea of south Korea on Oct. 30, according to a military source.
The U.S. imperialists do not hide the fact that this move is aimed to examine the feasibility of carrying out the joint naval operation in case of "contingency" on the Korean Peninsula and stage joint exercises for landing operations with the south Korean forces.
By "contingency" on the peninsula they meant the second Korean war.
The U.S. recently deployed B-2s in its military base on Guam and brought the above-said type destroyers to south Korean ports when the south Korean military bellicose forces were busy conducting war exercises codenamed "Hoguk 07." All these military moves are part of the U.S. deliberate and premeditated scenario to threaten the DPRK militarily and mount a preemptive attack on it.

Kim Jong Il's Famous Work Disseminated Worldwide

Pyongyang, November 3 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il's famous work "Socialism Is a Science" has been widely studied and disseminated in at least 120 countries over the past 13 years.
No sooner had the work been published on November 1, 1994 than media of different countries including China and Russia reported the full text or the gist of the work with Kim Jong Il's portrait and it was brought out in booklet.
Political parties, organizations and personages from various circles of different countries of the world including Syria, India and Nepal released statements. A total of 700 events including seminars, briefings, reading sessions and lectures took place to apply the profound idea of the work.
The New Communist Party of Britain at a meeting of its Secretariat chose the work as a must book for its membership and decided to widely introduce it through its newspaper.
