Paper- Making Technology with Long History

Pyongyang, September 14 (KCNA) -- Korea has made various kinds of paper for daily use from ancient times. The paper-making technology has witnessed a rapid development from before and after the fourth century.
The three kingdoms (Koguryo, Paekje and Silla) made paper called Maji and Joji respectively with hemp and paper-mulberry as raw materials.
The paper made from hemp in Koguryo (B.C. 277-A.D. 668) was famous for its well bleaching and smooth through fulling process.
The paper-making technology of the three kingdoms further developed in the period of Koryo (early 10th century-late 14th century). The quality paper made from paper-mulberry was exported to other countries in the 11th century.
Koryo encouraged the cultivation of paper-mulberry trees and private paper-making industry from 1145 to meet the growing demand for paper thanks to the publication and export of the complete collection of Buddhist sutras. The Koryo government set up the "Jiso", a paper manufacturing unit, and mass-produced the tough and smooth paper.
Hanji, traditional Korean paper, was also made in the period of Koryo.
Paekchuji made from hemp was used in publishing some important books for its snow-white color and high quality.
The paper-making technology made a rapid progress in the years of Ri Dynasty along with the invention of type printing technology.
Various kinds of paper were produced at that time according to their uses. Among them were Phyojonji, Jamunji, Kojongji, Ryuyopji, Ryumokji and Uiiji.
Phyojonji was used in presenting messages to the King on auspicious occasions and Jamunji in writing diplomatic documents.
Kojongji made from oat and barley straws was mainly used as inside paper. Ryuyopji, Ryumokji and Uiiji were made from trunk and leaves of willow tree and Job's-tears.
Paekchuji was widely known to China for its good quality.

Pyongyang, September 14 (KCNA) -- There is a canal flowing through Sariwon, seat of North Hwanghae Province.

The President visited the city in February Juche 43 (1954) and indicated the orientation and way for constructing a canal running through the heart of the city.
Indeed, this is a good plan no one had conceived for the formation and construction of the city.
The citizens of Sariwon turned out in the canal project as one, upholding the President's plan associated with his constant view and motto "The people are my God".
After the completion of the project, the President called at the city again and saw with great satisfaction the canal in which clean water flew.

Imperialists' Moves to Spread "Democracy" Denounced

Pyongyang, September 14 (KCNA) -- The imperialists' moves to spread "democracy" are a pernicious dominationist leverage to Westernize the world and justify their aggression and interference in the internal affairs of other countries and nations, says Rodong Sinmun in an article Friday.
The author of the article goes on:
Through the spread of "democracy" the imperialists seek to reduce people to anarchic liberalists and manipulate them to wreck the legal order of the state and cause social disorder and then use this as a pretext to meddle in other's internal affairs and realize their sinister scheme to change power.
This is proven by the "color revolution" that broke out in various countries in recent years.
The imperialists' moves to spread "democracy" are still more dangerous in view of it being a prelude to a war of aggression.
They make a terrific uproar over "the problem of democracy" in countries falling out of their favor and, when the opportunity presents itself, crush them by mobilizing huge armed forces. It is the lesson given by the U.S. aggression on Iraq that their "democracy" ballad is followed hard on the heel by a bloody war and military intervention.
If the imperialists' moves to spread "democracy" are allowed, they will entail catastrophic consequences. The collapse of socialism in the East European countries toward the close of the last century resulted from the lack of vigilance against these moves.
The world people desirous of the independent development and progress of the countries should intensify the struggle to oppose and frustrate the imperialists' moves to spread "democracy", looking straight into their reactionary and dangerous nature.
