Tremendous Flood Damage in DPRK
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- The continuous torrential rain that hit all parts of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea from August 7 caused great manpower and material losses.
Heavy rains registering more than 500-800 mm struck at least 150 cities and counties, claiming big casualties and losses in properties and doing serious damage to all the sectors of the national economy.
According to the information available from the Central Statistics Bureau, torrential rain, strong wind and landslide left at least 600 people dead or missing and thousands of people wounded.
Flood hit all parts of the country including Pyongyang city, North and South Hwanghae, Kangwon, South Phyongan and South Hamgyong Provinces, leaving dwelling houses for at least 240,000 families totally or partially destroyed or inundated. This left at least 100,000 people homeless and some 900,000 people flood-stricken.
More than 8,000 public buildings, schools, thousands of health service institutions and nurseries were totally or partially destroyed in heavy rain, stopping their operation.
More than 1,000 major production buildings of the country covering at least 200,000 square meters including the Komdok Mining Complex and the Taean Heavy Machine Complex were totally or partially destroyed or submerged, laying great obstacles in production.
Torrential rain struck hard the agricultural field, making it hard to harvest crops as expected in some 200,000 hectares of arable lands.
In particular, lots of arable lands were washed away, buried under silt or inundated in North and South Hwanghae, South Phyongan and Kangwon Provinces.
The flood hit hard the power, coal and ore mining sectors.
Dozens of transformer substations were submerged, over 800 electric poles collapsed and dam structures and generating facilities in Pujongang, Thongchon and other hydraulic power stations were destroyed or came under water.
Nearly 300 pits and cutting faces and more than 170 mining faces were submerged in 90 odd coal mines in Tokchon, Pukchang, Chonnae and other areas and hundreds of thousands of tons of coal were washed away.
Lots of pits and mining faces at Unpha, Yonphung and other mines came under water, bringing production to a halt.
The flood also struck hard railways and other means of transport and city management.
Some 100 sections of rail-roadbeds covering more than 78,000 cubic meters were destroyed, four tunnels inundated and more than 60 sections of retaining walls were collapsed and at least 200 sections of railroads were buried under some 62,400 cubic meters of earth due to landslide, thus suspending the operation in major sections of the railroad.
The flood destroyed major roads and tourist roads extending some 600 km in at least 2,000 sections in Pyongyang-Kaesong motorway, Pyongyang-Wonsan tourist motorway and others and some 2,200 sections of bridges.
More than 100 pumping stations for water supply, rainwater and sewage facilities were submerged to stop the supply of drinking water.
The flood left at least 2,000 hectares of salterns inundated. It did serious damage to other fields of the national economy.
The unusual heavy rain caused huge material losses to the DPRK, creating unprecedented difficulties in people's living and economic construction.
The army and people of the DPRK are now turning out as one to recover from the damage with persevering will.
Former Unconverted Long-term Prisoners Visit Revolutionary Battle Sites and Site in Area of Mt. Paektu
Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- Former unconverted long-term prisoners recently visited revolutionary battle sites and site in the area of Mt. Paektu.
The visitors laid bouquets before the statues of President Kim Il Sung before the Monument to the Victorious Pochonbo Battle, the Pochonbo Revolutionary Battle Site, the Chongbong Bivouac, the Monument to the Victory in the Battle in the Musan Area and on the shore of Lake Samji and the mosaic depicting the three generals of Mt. Paektu standing in the secret camp of Mt. Paektu and paid tribute to them in humble reverence.
They toured the Pochonbo Revolutionary Battle Site where they went round the Command Post of the Pochonbo Battle, the Pochonbo Revolutionary Museum, the then police post of the Japanese imperialists, the subcounty office and other places. They also visited the Paektu Hall, the Chonji Health Complex and the Samjiyon Schoolchildren's Palace, etc. in Samjiyon Township.
They visited the old home of leader Kim Jong Il in the secret camp in Mt. Paektu where they looked round with keen interest the relics preserved there with great care.
They also toured the Chongbong Bivouac, the Konchang Bivouac, the Pegaebong Bivouac, the Sinsadong Revolutionary Battle Site and the Rimyongsu Revolutionary Site.
U.S.-S. Korea Joint Military Exercises under Fire
Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The Czech, Moravian and Silesian Trade Unions' Association of the Czech Republic on August 22 made public a statement denouncing the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercises being staged by the U.S. and the south Korean authorities.
The statement said that the joint military exercises are a prelude to the war against the DPRK and a continuance of the hostile policy towards the DPRK.
Noting that the world progressive forces are raising questions as to why the U.S. is conducting such hostile actions at a time when the DPRK is positively trying to defuse the tension on the Korean Peninsula, the statement urged the U.S. to immediately stop the joint military exercises as they only escalate the tension on the peninsula and cannot be of any help to the reconciliation among Koreans.
Youth and Students in Pyongyang Make Study Tour of Oundong
Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- Youth and students in Pyongyang made a study tour of Oundong and held a meeting for poem recitation on Saturday on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's recitation of the famous poem "I Will Continue March towards Paektu" on Ryonggun Hill in the Oundong military camping site.
The tour group made up of officials of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League and other youths and students in Pyongyang laid floral baskets and bouquets before the statue of President Kim Il Sung on Ryongnam Hill before holding a meeting to start the tour that day.
At the end of the meeting the participants left for Oundong.
Upon their arrival in Oundong, they held a meeting for poem recitation in front of the revolutionary museum there.
The meeting began with the poem and song "I Will Continue March towards Paektu." Youths and students recited famous poem "Best Country" and other poems including "Gun Report in Oundong".
Anniversary of Kim Jong Il's Start of Songun Revolutionary Leadership Celebrated
Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- Art performances were given in Pyongyang and local areas on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's start of Songun revolutionary leadership.
The revolutionary drama "Under the Banner of Victory" was staged at the State Theatrical Theatre in Pyongyang, the revolutionary opera "The Flower Girl" adapted from the famous work "The Flower Girl" at the Pyongyang Grand Theatre and a music and dance performance by the artistes of the Mansudae Art Troupe at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre.
Artistes of the State Symphony Orchestra gave a concert at the Moranbong Theatre. They staged the symphony suite "Long Journey for Songun Leadership," an orchestra "Thunder on Jong Il Peak," a soprano "My Country of Songun" and other pieces.
Acrobats of the Pyongyang Circus and artistes of the orchestra of the Yun I Sang Music Institute also staged colorful programs.
A performance was given by members of the art group of the Pyongyang Schoolchildren's Palace.
The performers sang high praises of the glorious history of Songun leadership of Kim Jong Il who has wisely led all the servicepersons and people to defend socialism and build a great prosperous powerful nation since his start of Songun revolutionary leadership.
Similar performances were also given at the art theatres and cultural houses in North Phyongan, North and South Hamgyong, Kangwon, Ryanggang and other provinces.
Immediate Stop to War Exercises Demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The Anti-U.S. Women's Society of south Korea reportedly made public a statement demanding a stop to the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercises on August 20.
The statement accused the south Korean authorities of staging together with the U.S. the large-scale joint military exercises targeted against the north, branding this as a hostile action openly revealing the anti-reunification intention. "Cooperation" with the U.S. should not be regarded as more important than peace and security of the nation, the statement noted, and continued:
If the authorities truly stand for peace and reunification of the Korean Peninsula, they should stop at once the war maneuvers aimed at invading the north.
U.S.-S. Korea Joint Military Exercises Assailed
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- The U.S. Group for the Study of Songun Politics and the U.S. Solidarity Committee to Support the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front and the South Korean People's Struggle made public a joint statement in denunciation of the U.S.-south Korea joint military exercises on August 18.
The joint statement bitterly denounced the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercises being staged by the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean authorities as a grave provocative action to round off the capability to mount a preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK.
Noting that the joint military exercises are nothing but a foolish attempt to dare provoke the DPRK which has turned into an impregnable fortress under the wise Songun leadership of Kim Jong Il, the statement added:
The progressive organizations and personages of the world should fully support the just struggle of the Korean people to frustrate the moves of the imperialist aggressor forces for hegemony and war. They should also denounce and reject the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean reactionaries who threaten peace and increase the danger of war on the Korean Peninsula.
Program Contests and School Subject Contests Held
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- The 8th national program contests in the field of education and the 15th national school subject contests among middle schoolers were held here from August 20 to 24.
The contests brought together hundreds of students selected from universities, colleges and provincial, city (district) and county middle schools No. 1 and other middle schools in different parts of the country.
The program contests were divided into university groups A and B and college and middle school groups. The participants competed in working out the programs raised.
The school subject contests were divided into groups of provincial middle schools No. 1, city (district) and county middle schools No. 1 and other middle schools and schools of foreign languages. Stop to "Ulji Focus Lens" Demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- The South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification (Pomminryon) reportedly released a statement demanding a halt to the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military drills on August 20.
There has come an era of peace and reunification to the Korean Peninsula but the U.S. forces and south Korean military authorities are hell-bent on the large-scale war exercises instead of dropping a wild design for war of aggression, the statement noted, and went on:
The U.S. is the root cause of the division of the Korean nation and its sufferings and the threat of war on the Korean Peninsula.
If the south Korean authorities truly desire peace, they should opt for national cooperation, free from the shackles of the "south Korea-U.S. alliance."
The statement called on all Koreans to turn out in the struggle to put a stop to the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military drills under the uplifted banner of championing peace.
Rodong Sinmun Calls for Reinforcing NAM
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- The DPRK government, regarding it as an iron rule governing its external activities to steadfastly adhere to the basic principle and idea of the non-aligned movement (NAM) and be loyal to it, will fulfill its responsibility and duty for its strengthening and development and victorious advance in the future, too.
Rodong Sinmun today says this in a signed article.
It goes on:
The DPRK became a full-fledged member of the NAM on August 25, 1975. It marked an important occasion in raising the international position and say of the DPRK and putting spurs to the strengthening of the NAM.
The DPRK's joining it helped elevate its authority and increase its role and influence.
The DPRK calls upon the member nations of the NAM to further consolidate the unity and solidarity in the struggle for defending sovereignty and take concerted action to make sure that the principle of respecting sovereignty is fully observed in handling the major pending issues including disarmament, human rights, anti-terrorism and UN reform. Anniversary of Kim Jong Il's Start of Songun Revolutionary Leadership Marked
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- Papers Saturday dedicate editorials to the 47th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's start of Songun revolutionary leadership which call for eternally glorifying the Workers' Party of Korea's glorious history of Songun revolutionary leadership.
Rodong Sinmun says that the nearly half a century-long history of Kim Jong Il's Songun revolutionary leadership is shining as an immortal revolutionary history of the peerless great man whom no statesman in the present times can match.
It goes on:
His above-said history is a sacred history in which he set a brilliant example of the times in carrying forward the revolutionary cause of the leader, a proud history in which he brought about a new phase of socialist politics and steered the trend of the era of independence and a great history in which he has consolidated all foundations for achieving the prosperity of the country and the nation. Struggle against GNP Called for
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article calls for a resolute struggle against the Grand National Party and other pro-U.S. bellicose forces of south Korea which are doing harm to the interests of the country and nation by supporting the outside forces in their moves to ignite a war against the north.
Noting that the GNP is a traitorous party which stakes its fate on pro-U.S. actions and seeks a way out in pursuing confrontation with the north and a war against it, the article goes on:
The gentries of the traitorous party openly cried out for the abrogation of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, describing the significant day of June 15 as a "day of national humiliation" though it brought hope for independent reunification to the fellow countrymen, and desperately kicked up a row of sanctions against compatriots. As if it were not enough with this, they blustered that they would not rule out even a war.
They have been dead-set against the withdrawal of the U.S. forces from south Korea, the demand of the times and all the Koreans. They have worked with bloodshot eyes to boost the "war alliance" with foreign forces, talking nonsense that the "U.S. forces should remain in south Korea even after Korea is reunified."
The GNP zealously supported the north-targeted war exercises of the foreign forces intended to do harm to its compatriots and obliterate the reunification cause of the Korean nation, fully revealing its true colors as a pro-U.S. sycophantic and traitorous party, an anti-reunification party seeking war.
The GNP is, indeed, an enemy of peace as it is going mad with its moves to provoke a war against the north, backed by the foreign forces.
The ambition of the GNP gentries to seize power has reached extremes. It is as clear as noonday that if the GNP is allowed to come to power there will return the era of inter-Korean confrontation and the Koreans suffer war disasters again.
Actions to condemn the GNP and smash its attempt to come to power precisely mean a struggle for peace against war and a struggle for national reconciliation and unity and the independent reunification. It is necessary to remove the root cause of disasters in time.
Songun Politics Praised as Patriotic Politics for Independent Reunification

New Documentary Film Screened
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- A new documentary film "They Were Together on the Road of the Great Songun Leadership" was screened at the People's Palace of Culture on Saturday.
The film contains historic scenes showing the immortal exploits President Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il performed, while being together on the road of Songun leadership, by strengthening and developing the Korean People's Army into invincible revolutionary armed forces fully prepared politically and ideologically and in military technique and bringing about a great turn in developing the work for national defence.
It shows how energetically Kim Jong Il has worked to develop the KPA into the army of the leader, the army of the Party, carrying forward with loyalty Kim Il Sung's idea and line of attaching importance to the army and military affairs since he began his Songun leadership by visiting the Guard Seoul Ryu Kyong Su Tank Division 105 on August 25, Juche 49 (1960).
It was appreciated by senior officials of the Party and the state, the chairman of a friendly party, officials of working people's organizations, ministries and national institutions and working people in Pyongyang.
Dancing Parties of Youth and Students Held
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- Dancing parties of youth and students took place in different parts of the country on Saturday to mark the 47th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's start of Songun revolutionary leadership.
They presented joyful dances with profound thanks to Kim Jong Il who has ushered in a new era of national prosperity in various places including plazas in front of the Tower of the Juche Idea, the Monument to Party Founding, the Arch of Triumph and the April 25 House of Culture.

Pyongyang, August 23 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun Thursday dedicates a signed article to the 19th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's famous work "On Firmly Establishing a Revolutionary Outlook on the Leader among the Officials".
The work, published on August 23, Juche 77 (1988), clarifies the essence of establishing the revolutionary outlook on the leader, its importance and basic principles and ways to do so, the article says, and goes on:
The ideas and theories enunciated by him in the work serve as important guidelines for the officials of the DPRK to share the same idea and intention and destiny with the leader to the last.

Suppression of Chongryon and Koreans in Japan Denounced by Japanese Lawyers
Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- 40 Japanese lawyers presented a written complaint to the Human Rights Committee of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations on August 2 assailing the Japanese security authorities for forcibly searching the Korean primary school in Shiga at the outset of the year.
The written complaint termed the Osaka Prefectural Police's forcible search for the school a wanton violation of the Japanese law and other international treaties.
The persistent political suppression of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) and Koreans in Japan would infringe upon the rights of many Koreans in Japan, it warned, declaring that such illegal crackdown is intolerable.

Pyongyang, 25 de agosto (ATCC) -- Transcurrieron del dia 20 al 24 en esta capital el VIII concurso nacional de programas de la rama de educacion y el XV concurso nacional de los alumnos de la escuela secundaria.
En esos eventos participaron centenares de estudiantes y alumnos de las universidades, las escuelas superiores y las secundarias de distintas localidades del pais, inclusive las No. 1 de las provincias, las ciudades (municipios) y los distritos.

Pyongyang, 25 de agosto (ATCC) -- Hay que luchar resueltamente contra las fuerzas belicistas proyanquis del Sur de Corea, incluyendo el "Gran Partido Nacional", que perjudican los intereses del pais y la nacion adhiriendose a las maniobras de las fuerzas extranjeras encaminadas a desatar una guerra de agresion al Norte de Corea.

Esta banda de traidores abogo abiertamente por la "anulacion" de la Declaracion Conjunta Norte-Sur insultando atrevidamente como el "dia de verguenza nacional" el precioso 15 de junio (fecha de aprobacion de esa declaracion), que infundio en el corazon de la nacion coreana la esperanza de reunificacion independiente.
Y al cabo de recurrir freneticamente a la campana de sancion contra los connacionales, hablo de que no "vacilaria en desatar la guerra".
Ademas, a fin de fortalecer la "alianza belica" con las fuerzas foraneas, se opone obstinadamente a la retirada de las tropas norteamericanas ocupantes del Sur de Corea, que demandan la epoca y toda la nacion coreana, diciendo que "ellas deben seguir permaneciendo en suelo surcoreano aun despues de la reunificacion".
El "GPN" aplaude el ejercicio belico contra el Norte de Corea de las fuerzas extranjeras orientado a danar a sus connacionales y acabar con la causa de reunificacion de la nacion coreana poniendo al desnudo su naturaleza de la agrupacion vendepatria proyanqui y del partido belicista anti-reunificacion.
El "GPN", que maniobra enloquecidamente para desatar una guerra contra el Norte llevando a cuestas a las fuerzas foraneas, es el enemigo de la paz.
La ambicion de esa bancada de tomar el poder llega al extremo en estos momentos.
Resultara obvio que si el "GPN" lo logra, se reproducira la epoca de confrontacion Norte-Sur y se impondran a la nacion coreana los desastres de la guerra.
La lucha contra el "GPN" y por frustrar su intencion de tomar el poder deviene precisamente la batalla por la paz anti-belica y por la reconciliacion, la unidad y la reunificacion independiente de la nacion. Hay que eliminar a tiempo la causa de las calamidades.
Rodong Sinmun se refiere a la politica de Songun
Pyongyang, 25 de agosto (ATCC) -- La politica de Songun (priorizacion militar) es la gran politica patriotica que asegura la realizacion de la soberania nacional y la reunificacion pacifica y promete firmemente el esplendido futuro de la patria reunificada.
Asi senala el diario Rodong Sinmun en un articulo individual del dia 25 y continua:
La vitalidad de la politica de Songun se demuestra en el hecho de que esta sirve de un invencible remedio patriotico para defender el camino de independencia nacional y asegurar la reunificacion independiente con las fuerzas armadas y, al mismo tiempo, eliminar el peligro de la guerra en la Peninsula Coreana y garantizar la reconciliacion y unidad de la nacion y reunificacion pacifica.
En la bandera del Songun esta impregnada la ferrea voluntad y determinacion de defender la soberania del pais y la nacion y lograr sin falta la reunificacion independiente segun el anhelo unanime de la nacion.
Frente a las cada dia mas abiertas maniobras de agresion y hostilidad de EE.UU. a la RPDC, esta ha venido fortaleciendo por todos los medios la capacidad defensiva del pais enarbolando la bandera del Songun para defender firmemente la dignidad y soberania de la nacion.
La realidad prueba que si no hubieramos contado con el Songun, poderosa arma, no habriamos podido proseguir el camino de independencia nacional ni evitar la frustracion de la causa de reunificacion de la patria.
Bajo el paraguas de paz abierto por el Songun, en estos momentos la nacion coreana reciproca visitas libres compartiendo el sentimiento fraternal y consolida la unidad nacional celebrando en comun los actos por la reunificacion. La politica de Songun, siendo una poderosisima arma para la defensa de la paz, deviene una fuerza decisiva para lograr la reconciliacion y unidad de la nacion y adelantar la reunificacion de la patria.
