Torchlight Procession and Bonfire Gathering on Pochonbo Battle Anniversary

Pochon, June 4 (KCNA) -- A torchlight procession and a bonfire gathering were held by youths and students in Pochonbo on Monday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory in the historic Pochonbo battle commanded by President Kim Il Sung.
When darkness fell youths and students presented the letter "70th Anniversary" with torchlight on the road leading to the education ground in front of the statue of President Kim Il Sung standing high on a bank of the River Karim.
The grand torchlight procession began amid the loud playing of "The Guerilla March".
The columns of procession led by flags bearing a portrait of President Kim Il Sung and a portrait of Kim Jong Il marched past in fine array the major battle sites where members of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army poured a fire of revenge on the Japanese imperialists' ruling tools including the police substation and the sub-county office.
While the columns of the procession were marching through the street, fireworks fizzled into the sky near the commanding post where President Kim Il Sung led the Pochonbo battle to victory on the historic day (June 4, 1937).
The youths and students depicted the letters "Kim Il Sung" and "Kim Jong Il" and a red flag and a torchlight.
When the procession was passing before the statue of President Kim Il Sung, there burst forth loud calls including "Long live the revolutionary idea of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung!", "Let us defend the revolutionary headquarters headed by the great Comrade Kim Jong Il with our lives!" and "Let us youths carry the revolutionary cause of Juche to accomplishment following the Songun leadership of the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il!"
The procession meandered to the site of the bonfire gathering.
Kim Kyong Ho, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, in his speech urged all the youths and students to deeply cherish the undying Songun feats of President Kim Il Sung in their hearts and perform their mission and duty as the reserve combat unit and shock brigade of the supreme commander in upholding the cause of the Workers' Party of Korea, following the sturdy spirit of devotedly defending the leader and ardent patriotism displayed by the anti-Japanese revolutionary forerunners.
At the gathering the part depicting the Pochonbo battle from the long epic "Mt. Paektu" was recited and speeches were made.

U.S. Ambition for Preemptive Attack Assailed

Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- As already reported, the United States is actively promoting three-country cooperation by involving Australia in its joint study into the establishment of the Missile Defense System (MD) with Japan. In another development, it is increasing the combat capability of its forces while reinforcing its special troops in south Korea, Japan and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region.
Commenting on this, Rodong Sinmun today says that such movements as the joint development of MD and the forward deployment of task forces are a revelation of the U.S. hegemonic and strong-arm policy to hold an upper-hand of strength in the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world and contain its strategic enemies.
They are prompted by its strategic scheme to realize its ambition for preemptive attack based on an unchallenged upper-hand of strength, the paper notes, and goes on:
The establishment of security posture touted by the U.S. is aimed to bolster armed forces and hold military supremacy in a bid to attain upper-hand of strength worldwide.
Lurking behind the U.S. theory of "upper-hand of strength" is its attempt to mount a preemptive attack.
Peace and security have been wrecked and the danger of war increased in different regions of the world by the U.S.
Many countries of the world are now directing big efforts into increasing their military capability for self-defense, remaining highly vigilant against the U.S. arms buildup and military policy of aggression.
Such developments are seriously affecting the global peace and the development of international situation.
With nothing can the U.S. cover up its criminal nature as a wrecker of peace and security and a mastermind of escalating the tension.

World Environment Day Observed

Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- Papers here Tuesday dedicate articles to the World Environment Day.
Rodong Sinmun says in a signed article that diverse activities and functions are now under way in the DPRK according to the theme for this year designated by the United Nations Environment Programme.
    It goes on:
The DPRK has long paid great attention to the environmental protection helpful to promoting the people's health, increasing the scenic beauty of cities and providing better living conditions and environment. Thanks to the correct environmental protection policy of the DPRK government, the DPRK is recognized by the world community as a country with good environment.
The issue of environmental protection is now presenting itself as a very important and urgent one worldwide. Ecological environment is being seriously contaminated in various parts of the world for various reasons.
No country can be an exception in the work to protect the environment on the earth. Good results can be expected in this work only when all countries make positive efforts, aware of the urgency and importance of the work.
The DPRK will conduct positive work for environmental protection, maintaining close touch with international organizations in the future, too.
Minju Joson in a signed article notes that global warming is the most serious worldwide problem at present, adding that the melting of ice in the polar areas is the most vivid example of it. In order to cope with the situation the DPRK is taking steps to increase and firmly protect fresh water resources, stop soil from being washed away and prevent damage by strong winds and floods.

Japan Urged to Settle Its Crime-woven Past

Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- The recent 8th Asian solidarity meeting for solution to the issue of "comfort women" for imperial Japanese army in a joint statement strongly demanded the Japanese government open to the public all the reports and data related to the past crimes committed by it in Korea and other Asian countries and take prompt political and legal measures to fulfill legal responsibilities including making a formal apology and compensation for them.
Timed to coincide with this, the UN Committee against Torture urged the Japanese government to educate the people in the cause of discriminative actions including sexual abuses and relieve victims.
Minju Joson today in a signed commentary carried in this regard accuses Japan of refusing to honestly admit its past criminal acts and persistently evading the responsibility for making apology and compensation for them, defying the above-said demand of the international community.
    It goes on:
The Japanese reactionaries seek an ulterior aim in justifying their past crimes and refusing to apologize and compensate for them.
It is a revelation of their invariable ambition to reinvade Asia, come what may.
It is as clear as noonday that there is no future for Japan as long as it is keen to repeat its past history of aggression, far from drawing a proper lesson from its crime-woven past.
The Japanese reactionaries' acts of tampering with Japan's history and challenging the demand of the international community for admitting its past crimes and apologizing for them would only lead them to self-destruction.
The Japanese reactionaries would be well advised to earnestly opt for redressing Japan's past, well aware of the demand of the present era.

An effort to improve the efficiency of solar batteries is being made, too.
Meanwhile, a brisk tree-planting campaign is being launched to increase the adsorption of carbon.

Immortal Exploits in Keeping Life-line of Revolution

Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- The traditions of Paektu, life-line of the revolution, are being carried forward with credit in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The new era for inheriting the revolutionary traditions was opened up in the middle of the 1950s.
Kim Jong Il made an expedition to the revolutionary battle sites in the area of Mt. Paektu, leading an expedition party formed with students of the then Pyongyang Middle School No.1 in June Juche 45 (1956) when the enemies within and without made desperate efforts to obliterate the revolutionary traditions.
The historic expedition was a stern declaration that there were no other traditions but the revolutionary traditions of Paektu established by President Kim Il Sung.
He published many famous works including "Let us cultivate the revolutionary spirit of Paektu among the rising generation" and "Let us brilliantly carry forward the revolutionary traditions of Juche" while leading the Korean revolution. He, in the works, gave a comprehensive exposition of the theoretical and practical problems arising in inheriting the revolutionary traditions.
He, thus, provided such the fundamental guidelines for accomplishing the revolutionary cause as the idea that the attitude toward the revolutionary traditions is directly related with the stand and viewpoint on the leader and the idea and theory on embodying the revolutionary traditions in socialist construction and in all fabrics of social life.
He saw to it that all the ideas, theories and policies of the Workers' Party of Korea were shaped to defend and glorify the revolutionary ideas and exploits of the leader and created a shining example in building the sacred temple of the revolution and the grand palace for the education in the revolutionary traditions.
Under his leadership, the Monument to the Victorious Battle in Pochonbo, Samjiyon Grand Monument, Monument to the Victorious Battle of the Musan Area and Phophyong Monument to Revolutionary Activities were erected as immortal grand edifices and the revolutionary battle and historic sites have been converted into centers for the education in the revolutionary traditions.
