15th Reunion of Separated Families and Relatives Closes

Mt. Kumgang Resort, May 14 (KCNA) -- The 15th reunion of separated families and relatives from the north and the south of Korea, which began on Mt. Kumgang Resort on May 9, came to a close.
Those from the north side had a group reunion with their kin from the south side on May 12.
Recollecting with deep emotion the worthwhile life they have led under the care of the Workers' Party of Korea and the state, they told their kin from the south side that they and all members of their families are making positive contributions to the reunification of the country and the building of a rich and powerful country true to the Songun policy of Kim Jong Il. Separated families and relatives from the south side were deeply impressed to see the orders and medals and certificates of honorary titles and academic degrees their kin from the north side received.
They called upon their kin from the south side to make positive efforts to achieve the sacred cause of reunification under the uplifted banner of "By our nation itself", holding that the June 15 joint declaration should be implemented to the letter to put an end to the tragedy of division at an early date.
The Red Cross of the south side gave a reception for the separated families and relatives from the north and south sides on the same day.
They had a family reunion again on May 13 and spent a pleasant time, talking to each other and posing for photographs and having meals together. They toured the area around scenic Samil Lagoon.
Those from the north bid farewell to their kin from the south on May 14.

British Party Signs Pyongyang Declaration

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- The Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist|Leninist) signed the Pyongyang Declaration "Let Us Defend and Advance the Cause of Socialism" on May 1.
Upon the signature of the Pyongyang Declaration, the vice-chairman and international secretary of the Party Central Committee sent a letter to the DPRK mission in Britain, which said:
The Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist) pays regards to the Workers' Party of Korea and the Korean people wisely guided by Kim Jong Il for their leading role in the struggle to build socialism, the future of humankind.
The staunch anti-imperialist stand upheld by the WPK and the Korean people in this struggle serves as the source of encouragement to all of us.
The British working class and progressive people extend solidarity to the Korean people in their struggle.
We deem it great honor to note that the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist) has become united in the same ranks in idea and will with the WPK and the Korean people led by Kim Jong Il by signing the Pyongyang Declaration.

Anti-U.S., Anti-GNP Struggle Called for in S. Korea

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- The Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration in south Korea on May 8 reportedly published an appeal on the situation under the headline "Let us turn out in the anti-U.S. and anti-Grand National Party struggle by inheriting the May 18 spirit".
The appeal said that the U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK is being dealt a telling blow by its great might and the United States and pro-American conservative forces driven to the corner are making last-ditch efforts to gratify their wild ambition at any cost.
Predicting that the "presidential election" this year will be a fierce showdown between the pro-American conservative forces and the progressive reformist forces, the appeal called for winning it through a general turnout in the anti-U.S. and anti-GNP struggle. This struggle will be a sacred one to settle the grudges of the Kwangju people, said the appeal, adding: The fire of the anti-U.S. struggle should be concentrated on the U.S. forces for their withdrawal.
If the GNP is allowed to take power, the clouds of war and confrontation would cover the Korean Peninsula again, it warned, urging the people of all social strata to stage a powerful anti-GNP struggle so as to bar without fail the group of traitors from coming to power.

Projected Construction of U.S. Forces' Base in S. Korea Assailed

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Defense Ministry is now pushing forward at a rapid pace a plan to build a military base of the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces covering 146,000 phyong (one phyong equals about 36 square feet) in Kunsan, North Jolla Province to host an Apache unit and more than 2,000 troops of them.
Rodong Sinmun Monday observes in a signed commentary carried in this regard: This is a treacherous move to help the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces step up their preparations for a war of aggression against the DPRK and reduce south Korea to their war base, and it is an anti-reunification act of throwing a wet blanket over the inter-Korean process of reconciliation and unity.
    The commentary goes on:
The U.S. imperialist aggression forces in south Korea are keen to abandon their old military bases and occupy new land for their new bases, while putting spurs to the transfer of their military bases.
It is their black-hearted design to turn Kunsan into a new base for a preemptive attack upon the DPRK, a forward base for their war of aggression.
This is clearly evidenced by the fact that Kunsan has been chosen as one of "future key bases" for the U.S. troops in south Korea.
The stalled inter-Korean relations are now entering the phase of reconciliation thanks to much effort.
It is the results of the patriotic efforts exerted by the DPRK to promote the process of reconciliation and unity that the suspended inter-Korean ministerial talks resumed and undertakings for national reconciliation and cooperation have become brisk again.
The nation will never pardon the south Korean military authorities' treacherous and anti-reunification moves to chill the desire for national reconciliation and unity and push the favorably developing north-south relations to confrontation and war.

Dynamic Movement for National Unity Urged

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- All Koreans at home and abroad are called upon to wage dynamic actions for national unity, as achieving it is one of the three tasks facing the movement for national reunification, and thus register the greatest success in the efforts to realize the unity this year and bring earlier the day of national reunification.
Rodong Sinmun Monday says this in a signed article.
    It goes on:
The unity of the whole nation guarantees victory in the struggle to independently carve out the destiny of the nation. Achieving the unity of the whole nation, therefore, provides a basic way of building and bolstering the driving force for national reunification.
The above-said struggle is very important in the light of the need of the present times.
It is also very important to create an atmosphere favorable for achieving the unity of the whole nation. The Koreans should successfully hold events for reunification on such significant days of the nation as June 15 and August 15 to stir up the atmosphere of reconciliation and unity across the country and make their desire for independent reunification grow stronger.
The unity of the whole nation can be achieved and consolidated only when all the Koreans actively promote solidarity and alliance and strengthen their organizational cohesion, prompted by their desire for reunification and patriotism. The national unity will steadily grow stronger at a new stage when different organizations for the reunification movement and people of all strata at home and abroad briskly conduct contact and dialogue, boost cooperation and exchange and intensify their common struggle for national reunification with the June 15 All Korea Joint Committee as an umbrella body.
It is an important part of the drive to achieve national unity to realize a great alliance against the conservative forces in south Korea.
It is impossible to achieve national unity and accelerate the cause of national reunification as long as the gentries of the Grand National Party in south Korea are at large, the article concludes.

Rodong Sinmun on Japan's "Cooperative Diplomacy"

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- Japanese Prime Minister Abe, during his recent junket to Mid-east countries including Saudi Arabia, blustered that Japan would open up a "new era" in the Middle East, waxing eloquent about "cooperation" in the oil realm.
Pointing out that the main purpose of his Mid-east trip was to obtain a secure oil supply, a Rodong Sinmun analyst Monday says:
To barter technology for oil was one of the means employed by Abe in drawing oil producing Mid-east countries closer to Japan. These countries are now in urgent need of technology and fund. Japan is going to barter its outdated technology for oil by craftily taking advantage of such situation.
What Japan seeks is to further subjugate the Mid-east oil producers economically and deprive them of their oil to the last drop at cheap prices.
Particularly noteworthy in the roving diplomacy of Japan is that Abe's trip to Mid-east countries was timed to coincide with a visit to Kazakhstan by a large group of businessmen led by the minister of Economy and Industry of Japan. One of the purposes of its trip was to take away rich oil and natural gas of Kazakhstan under the cloak of "cooperation." But the purpose of greater importance was to monopolize its nuclear energy resources including uranium.
Japan is set to turning itself into a military giant and a nuclear power.
By the "new era" in the Middle East Abe meant, in essence, an era of domination and subjugation, exploitation and plunder of the countries in the region.
The aggressive and predatory nature of Japanese militarism will never change.

Guidelines for Development of Korean Language

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung made public famous work "On Correctly Preserving the National Characteristics of the Korean Language" on May 14 forty-one years ago.
The President liberated the country from the rule of the Japanese imperialists and thus created the social conditions and linguistic environment for developing the national language. He took state measures to use the Korean written and spoken languages as the official language, while strengthening a campaign against illiteracy and education in national language.
Basing himself on this, the President published the historic work which gave comprehensive and scientific answers to the issues of principle arising in preserving the national characteristics and Juche character of the Korean language in Juche 55 (1966).
The work expounds the idea that to preserve the national characteristics of the Korean language is an essential requirement for the development of the national language and the national task of the Korean revolutionaries and people. It also advances the basic orientation for correctly preserving it, the idea on laying the foundation for its development and ways for arranging and developing the Korean language.
The work details the problems arising in vocabulary arrangement such as looking for and using existing native words, adopting and using good dialects, naming places and children with pure native words, making new words with pure native words.
In particular, the idea on preserving and developing national characteristics of language with the Pyongyang language as the standard is of weighty significance.
This idea opened up a broad way to successfully develop the national language on the basis of the already-made typical model.
The important guidelines for the development of the national language brought about a revolutionary turn in the work for preserving the national characteristics of the Korean language and in the linguistic life of the people.

Cultural, Emotional Life on Sundays

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- Working people enjoy cultural and emotional life every Sunday in the DPRK.
Working people, school youth and children go to Moran Hill, Rungra Islet, Mt. Taesong and other scenic spots to enjoy their holiday with workshop and family as unit.
The historic relics including Ulmil Pavilion and resting places in the Youth Park and Moran Hill are crowded with holiday-makers.
Around noon, they have rich lunches with their family members, relatives, friends and work-team members, which are usually followed by recreation parties.
The fun fairs in Mangyongdae, Munsu and Mt. Taesong are overflowing with joy and optimism of the holiday-makers.
Children, parents who become a child again and crowd have a pleasant time, using funfair facilities.
Young men and women play basket-ball, table-tennis, tennis and other sports and amusement games in gymnasiums in the Chongchun Street and Pyongyang Indoor Stadium.
Angling is also spectacular on the banks of the Taedong River and Pothong River.

10th Pyongyang Spring International Trade Fair Opens

Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- The 10th Pyongyang Spring International Trade Fair opened with due ceremony at the Three-Revolution Exhibition Monday.
On display at the exhibition are machine tools, electric and electronic equipment, petrochemical products, vehicles, medicaments, foodstuff and other goods produced by companies of the DPRK, China, Russia, Syria, Germany, Bangladesh, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, Indonesia, Poland and Taipei of China.
Present there were Ro Tu Chol, vice-premier of the Cabinet, Rim Kyong Man, minister of Foreign Trade, Ri Hak Gwon, director of the DPRK Chamber of Commerce, trade officials and delegations and delegates from various countries and regions.
Also present there were representatives and staff members of foreign embassies here.
Ri Ryong Nam, vice-minister of Foreign Trade, made a congratulatory speech.
Kim Tong Myong, director general of the Korean International Exhibition Corporation, in an opening speech noted that the Korean people would as ever strive to boost economic exchange and cooperation with all the countries friendly toward the DPRK.

Open Forum on "Comfort Women" Issue Held in Japan

Tokyo, May 12 (KNS-KCNA) -- An open forum was held in Tokyo on May 10 to verify the issue of "comfort women" for the Imperial Japanese Army under the sponsorship of the Korean Social Scientists Association in Japan.
The forum heard speeches made on the subjects of "From trial of war criminals to Yasukuni shrine", "We verify wrong remarks made by Abe" and "Repeated resolutions of the United Nations Human Rights Commission".
Speakers cited testimonies made by victims and ex-soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army who participated in the war of aggression and materials discovered so far to prove the falsity and injustice of the reckless remarks made by Abe and other high-ranking politicians of Japan denying the fact that the army was directly involved in the sexual slavery.
The words of "sympathy" expressed by Abe with victims of the sexual slavery during his recent junket to the U.S. were "an apology to the U.S.", not the apology made to the victims, they noted, declaring that this was an intolerable rash act of insulting the victims.
They urged the Japanese government to formally admit its historical responsibility for the "comfort women" issue and make an honest apology and compensation to the victims.
Present there were Kim Hwa Hyo, chairman of the Korean Social Scientists Association in Japan, Korean social scientists and other Koreans and Japanese figures.
