Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- The Italian Preparatory Committee for Celebrating February Holiday, the birthday of Kim Jong Il, was formed in Rome with due ceremony on Jan. 10. Miriam Pellegrini Ferri, chairman of the Italian Committee for the Study of Songun Idea for Independence and Sovereignty, was elected chairman of the preparatory committee at the ceremony.

Mass Sports Activities Held in DPRK

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- Officials and working people across the country dynamically conducted mass sports activities on Sunday, the first Day of Sports of this significant year. Officials and working people of industrial establishments in Pyongyang, including the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Plant and the Pyongyang 326 Electric Wire Factory, had collective races and sports and amusement games.
In Hamhung, different sports events were held by officials and employees of the South Hamgyong Provincial People's Committee, the Hamhung Branch of the State Academy of Sciences, Hamhung University of Chemical Engineering and other institutions at provincial level and dozens of units in science, education, public health and other fields.
Collective races and other sports and amusement games were also held in other provinces, cities and counties across the country.

Reexamination of Anti-Democracy Evil Law Demanded

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- A joint meeting of human rights organizations composed of 37 organizations of south Korea reportedly called a press conference in front of the building of the Police Office in Seoul on Jan. 8 in demand of a total reexamination of the "Law on Meetings and Demonstrations." Speakers at the press conference noted that the "bill on the amendment of the law" presented to the "National Assembly" infringed upon the human rights and freedom of the people.
The bill is an offspring of the attempts of the police to shift the responsibility for the incident in 2005 onto the participants in the meeting after brutally killing peasants in the fight for their right to existence, they noted.
They said it was preposterous for the "government" to label the righteous protests of the people of different social strata against the conclusion of the south Korea-U.S. "Free Trade Agreement" and expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek as "violent acts." They branded the Police Office and the "National Assembly" intending to deprive the people of the freedom of demonstration as power-wielding groups.
A total reexamination of the "Law on Meetings and Demonstrations" will help defend the basic rights of the people, they said, declaring:
We will launch a disobedience campaign against the anti-democratic evil law in the future.

Political Coloring Offensive of Conservative Media Assailed

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- The South Headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification (Pomchonghakryon) in south Korea reportedly made public a statement on Jan. 10 in which it denounced Dong-A Ilbo and other conservative media for kicking off such anti-north smear campaign from the outset of the new year as taking issue with the articles carried by organizations for the progressive movement on the occasion of the New Year and urging the anti-reunification forces to close their ranks. The statement said that it is not something unprecedented for those organizations to have carried articles on the occasion of the New Year, adding that the South Headquarters of Pomchonghakryon, in particular, is the organization for the reunification movement struggling against the anti-reunification moves of the U.S. and the Grand National Party of south Korea.
    It went on:
The conservative media is now hell-bent on the propaganda inciting confrontation among compatriots. This is aimed at inventing pretexts for cracking down upon the organizations for the progressive movement and helping the pro-U.S. and anti-reunification forces come to power through the "presidential elections" slated to take place this year in a bid to scrap the June 15 joint declaration and quell the aspiration and will of the people of all social standings for national reunification.
The South Headquarters of Pomchonghakryon will intensify the information activities for the progress and reunification movement of people from all walks of life in order to foil the anti-north diatribe of Dong-A Ilbo and other conservative media in the service to the U.S. and decisively smash the attempt of the pro-U.S. sycophantic and conservative forces to grab power.

Meeting for Settlement of Issue of "Comfort Women" for Imperial Japanese Army Held

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- The 743rd Wednesday meeting for the settlement of the issue of "comfort women" for the Imperial Japanese Army was reportedly held in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul on Jan. 10. The meeting was attended by members of the Council for the Solution of the Issue of the Volunteers' Corps and victims of the "comfort women" for the army.
Speakers at the meeting noted that though the people have struggled for 15 years since 1992 in front of the Japanese embassy for a proper settlement of the issue, Japan has not yet made any honest apology and compensation to the victims.
They urged the Japanese government to make the earliest possible apology and compensation to the victims and demanded the south Korean "government" positively opt for finding a solution to the issue.

Japanese Reactionaries' Anti-DPRK Folly under Fire

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- Cameramen of the Japanese Fuji TV surreptitiously shot the activities of the Swiss Committee for Supporting the Independent and Peaceful Reunification of Korea in Switzerland and attempted to threaten its members over "abduction case" only to be put to shame and kicked out. Commenting on this, Rodong Sinmun Monday says this reveals the wretched sight of the Japanese reactionaries attempting to damage the high international authority of the DPRK by such infantile trick.
    The analyst goes on:
In August last year the TV cameramen crawled into Switzerland and engaged themselves in espionage spying on every act of DPRK embassy officials and diplomats in Switzerland in an effort to find something available to sling mud at the DPRK. They took a picture of the secretary general of the committee getting into a car with his Chinese wife to attend a function on an official invitation of the DPRK embassy and tailed after them driving for the embassy.
They resorted to a petty trick to misrepresent the entry of the secretary general and his wife into the embassy as "an abduction case".
This is not the whole story. Fuji TV reporters who flew to Switzerland in December last year asked the chairman of the committee for an "interview" and behaved arrogantly like judicial officers treating criminals after displaying pictures they had taken. They tried to force him to admit that the committee had "cooperated" in the "abduction" of Asian women to north Korea.
Lashed into fury by their impudent and robber-like act, the chairman demanded they get out promptly, but they persistently stuck to their gun and vanished in the end. Next day, they went to the chairman of the Pyongyang Cultural Interchange Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, a Swiss organization for friendship with the DPRK, and copied there an invitation card to a function issued by the committee. That night they flocked to the secretary general of the committee and went berserk asking him questions to induce him to admit that he had "abducted" an Asian woman and handed her over to the DPRK mission. When the wife of the secretary general appeared before the Japanese reporters at that moment, they tucked their tails and ran away.
It must be made clear that the acts of the reporters from the land of Japs were acts of hooligans not suited to journalism.
This fact shows that the reactionaries of the land of Japs are getting more hysteric in their dastardly moves to hurt the external authority of the DPRK and arrest the legitimate and just activities of the organizations for friendship with the DPRK formed in many countries worldwide.

Electricity Production Goes Up

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- Officials of the Ministry of Power Industry, with a sense of responsibility for a pilot in the building of an economic power, are working hard to make an epochal turn in the power production from the outset of the year. Pak Nam Chil, minister of the Power Industry, told KCNA:
The ministry is concentrating all the forces on operating the already repaired generating equipment at full capacity, while considerably raising the existing capacities of the thermal- and hydro-power stations across the country.
In particular, it is gearing up preparations for the general overhaul of facilities at the power stations with main emphasis on putting production of the Pukchang Thermal-power Complex and the Pyongyang Thermal-power Complex on normal track.
The workers of the hydropower stations are successfully carrying on the repair of hydraulic power structures, managing water well and operating them in a scientific and technical way. Great efforts are channeled to manufacturing highly efficient turbines so as to boost the turbine efficiency.
Along with this, they are taking various measures to make best use of the produced electricity. They are readjusting the power transmission system to reduce the line loss and distributing electricity in a rational way.
Officials, workers and technicians of power stations in different parts of the country including the Chongjin Thermal-power Plant have turned out in the increased production of electricity, solving the needed materials and equipment components with their own efforts.

Light Industrial Workers Respond to Call of Joint Editorial

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) - Working people of the light industrial factories of the DPRK are striving hard to increase the variety and quality of products in response to the joint New Year editorial's call for decisively improving the production of consumer goods. The Ministry of the Light Industry makes each factory push ahead with the work of putting production process on the latest science and technology to suit its actual conditions, following the example of the Pyongyang Textile Machine Plant in successfully building the technical processes for the streamlined production of a new kind of weaving machine.
The workers of the Sariwon Textile Machine Plant have set about the work of renovating the metal needle band production process and those of the Pyongyang Textile Mill the technological updating of dyeing and weaving preparatory processes.
The knitting factories throughout the country have taken thoroughgoing measures to provide raw materials to the production of more knitted goods and fabrics and the Songyo and Kanggye Knitting Factories have already woven a large amount of various quality goods.
The workers of the Wonsan Shoes Factory and the Sinuiju and Chongjin Footwear Factories are striving hard to produce various kinds of footwear that please the people's tastes.
A drive for increased production of better velvet, polychromatic and other silk fabrics is taking place at the Nyongbyon and Pakchon Silk Mills.
The fulfillment of daily silk thread production assignments have been reported from the silk-reeling mills in Hamhung, Huichon and Pyongyang.
Production has been put on a normal track at the essential foodstuff factories in Pyongyang, Kanggye, Sinuiju and other parts of the country through technical updating of production processes.

Ceaseless Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration Called for

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- The historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration is a beacon of hope as it showed the way for prosperity of the Korean nation. All the Koreans should continue to wage the struggle for implementing the joint declaration in whatever ordeals and hardships. Only when doing so, is it possible for the Korean nation to usher in a heyday of the cause of independent reunification of the country this year. Rodong Sinmun stresses this in a signed article today.
All the compatriots in the north and the south of Korea and abroad should vigorously advance under the uplifted banner of the June 15 joint declaration, full of confidence and optimism in victory, the article says, and goes on:
It is important to adhere to the principle of national independence. National independence is the essence of the joint declaration and lifeline for realizing the cause of national reunification.
The Korean nation is responsible for its own destiny and it is able to defend and shape its destiny. Any outside forces can not carry out the reunification movement directly related to the destiny of the Korean nation in its stead.
After the adoption of the joint declaration, it has been clearly proved through its implementation that there is nothing impossible to be done by the Korean nation when its members join their efforts.
Any humiliating practice based on flunkeyism and dependence on outsiders should never be allowed as it goes against the trend of the present times and the idea of "By our nation itself".
All the Koreans should vigorously struggle to resolutely repulse any moves to eliminate the joint declaration regarding the principle of national independence as its basic spirit. In particular, they should strictly preserve the Juche character and national character with the pride of being members of the homogeneous nation with history of 5,000 years and decisively reject the U.S. interruption and interference in the internal affairs of the Korean nation.
The joint declaration is a declaration on national independence and great national unity, and it is urgent to strengthen the might of great national unity in every way.
In order to achieve the great unity of the nation, it is necessary to build up a nationwide alliance of pro-reunification patriotic forces irrespective of differences in ideology and ism, political view, religious belief, class and social strata.
It is important to cement the solidarity and alliance among the reunification movement organizations in the north and the south of Korea and abroad.
All the compatriots should turn out to implement the three-point task of attaching importance to the nation, defending peace and achieving the unity and thus usher in the heyday of the cause of independent reunification.

British Organization Protests Japan's Repression of Chongryon

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- The British Coordinating Committee of Friends of Korea sent a letter to the Japanese embassy in London on Jan. 9 in protest against the Japanese authorities' suppression of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon). The letter strongly denounced the above-said suppression as a fascist outrage.
Noting that the Japanese government cancelled the exemption from taxation for facilities related to Chongryon and has set Chongryon officials and other Korean residents in Japan as targets of violence and blackmail, the letter said that such situation reminds one of the past years when the Japanese militarists brutally cracked down upon peoples of colonial countries. If the Japanese authorities continue repressing Chongryon, they will finally meet disgrace again, it stressed.
The letter expressed the firm belief that the Japanese people who love democracy would struggle to keep their government from doing such dastardly action any longer.

Japanese Reactionaries' Anti-Chongryon Moves under Fire

Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- There took place a serious case on Jan. 9 in which unidentified hooligans planted substance presumed to be explosive before the building of the Fukuoka Branch of the Nisi Credit Association of the Korean Bank of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon). On Jan. 10 the Hyogo Prefectural Police Agency took such fascist action as conducting a search operation against the hall of the Korean Hyogo Prefectural Commercial Association in Japan, the Osaka-Kobe management room and the house of its room chief and arresting him.
Rodong Sinmun Monday says in a signed commentary carried in this regard: The whirlwind of political terrorism and suppression of Koreans in Japan and Chongryon kicked up by the reactionaries of the island country from the outset of the year suggests that they will become extremely desperate in their hostile moves against Chongryon and the DPRK this year.
Their terrorism and threats to the Korean residents in Japan and anti-Chongryon campaign are not prompted merely by the wicked intention and gangster-like disposition of Japs, the commentary notes, and continues:
Horrendous political terrorism and all sorts of conspiratorial moves against the Koreans in Japan and Chongryon organizations have been unabated in the island country styling itself a "law-governed state" and "traditional police state" and they are getting pronounced as the days go by. It is as clear as a pikestaff that its authorities' anti-DPRK, anti-Chongryon campaign is politically motivated.
Lurking behind the dastardly campaign kicked off by the reactionaries of the island country on charges of "violation of the law on taxation" is a sinister aim to invent a pretext for the wholesale crackdown upon Chongryon.
The Korean people are now finding it hard to repress their national resentment and hatred against them gravely threatening the national rights of Chongryon and the Korean residents in Japan and their lives and properties.
The reactionaries in the land of Japs would be well advised to properly understand the towering resentment of the Korean people against them and stop at once all forms of terrorism and smear campaigns intended to encroach upon the dignity of the DPRK and Chongryon and threaten the lives and safety of the Koreans in Japan.
