Chairman of Syrian Youth Union Interviewed

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- I really envy the Korean youths who are under the leadership of Kim Jong Il. Adnan Arbash, chairman of the Revolutionary Youth Union of Syria, on a visit to Korea said this in an interview with KCNA on May 29 prior to his return home.
He noted that he was deeply moved to see the Korean people working hard to build a great prosperous powerful nation under the Songun leadership of Kim Jong Il.
The Korean people have built many monumental edifices of the Songun era in different parts of the country, bravely overcoming manifold difficulties though they were hard pressed for everything, he said, and went on:
The achievements made by them in socialist construction were attributable to the ever-victorious Songun politics of Kim Jong Il who is well versed in political, economic, military and all other fields and is leading the Korean army and people to victory.
The Youth Hero Motorway proudly built by Korean young people with bare hands is a brilliant fruition of the warm love and deep trust of Kim Jong Il who values and loves them most and puts them forward as a vanguard, a shock brigade in building a great prosperous powerful nation.
The Revolutionary Youth Union of Syria will in the future, too, extend full support and solidarity to the Korean people and youths in their vigorous efforts for building a great prosperous powerful socialist nation.

Then they went round the friendship room newly built on the farm and chatted with officials of the farm, deepening the sentiments of friendship.
The ambassador said leader Kim Jong Il was showing deep concern for agricultural production and hoped that the farmers would reap a rich crop this year by making a better farming under his leadership.
The embassy officials handed aid materials to the farm.

Kim Jong Il Highly Praised

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Aleksandra Permyakova, head and manager of the Russian State Academic People's Chorus Named after M.E. Pyatnichki which had given performances in Pyongyang and local areas of the DPRK, was interviewed by KCNA at the airport Tuesday before leaving for home. Recollecting the joy and excitement at meeting with leader Kim Jong Il, she said he met with the chorus and appreciated its performance, busy as he was with the affairs of the state.
I was really amazed by the deep interest shown by him not only in modern art but in folk art, she said, adding: Our performance was highly praised by him. This was a great encouragement to the members of the chorus.
    She further said:
We will show greater zeal in our folk art activities for friendship with the Korean people and peace. I once again extend heartfelt thanks to Kim Jong Il who saw the performance of the chorus and congratulated it on its successful performance.

S. Korean Electors Urged Not to Vote for Candidates from GNP

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- The Federation of Koreans in the U.S. reportedly issued an appeal on May 27 urging the south Korean people not to vote for even a single candidate from the "Grand National Party" in the "election to the local self-governing bodies" as it is now being censured for acting as a "political party of a foreign country" in a desperate bid to scrap the June 15 joint declaration. They should not allow the GNP to win a landslide victory in the "election" under any circumstances because it has worked hard to annul the June 15 joint declaration, totally denying its spirit and principles, the appeal noted, and continued:
The GNP has unhesitatingly perpetrated any act of treachery to carry out its strategy. In case the GNP wins a sweeping victory, it will mean a disaster for the Korean nation.
The GNP is a group of conservative forces keen to revive its past history characterized by dictatorship, tyranny, irregularities and corruption and swindle and a group of anti-national and anti-reunification forces as they have worked hard to chill the desire and efforts of the fellow countrymen to implement the joint declaration.
Noting that the joint declaration precisely means a rosy future of the Korean nation, the appeal called upon the electors to cast their ballots for those candidates who would dedicate themselves to the implementation of the joint declaration.

Halt to Infringement on Human Rights in Phyongthaek Urged

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Members of the civic and public organizations including the "group for the investigation into violence and encroachment upon human rights in Phyongthaek" reportedly held a press conference in Seoul on May 25 to demand a halt to the human rights violations now being committed in Phyongthaek, the site planned for the expansion of the U.S. military base. Speakers there strongly demanded that the military and police forces pull out of Taechu-ri and Todu-ri as early as possible as they regard inhabitants there as "enemy".

S. Korean People Urged to Discharge Their Responsibility to Nation

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Minju Joson Wednesday carries a commentary with regard to the "election to local self-governing bodies" scheduled all over south Korea today. Calling upon the south Korean people, mindful of their responsibility to the nation, to take part in the poll without exception and turn all the polling booths into courts of judgment on the "Grand National Party", the analyst says:
The "election" is, in essence, an acute showdown between the pro-June 15 forces and the anti-June 15 forces. The GNP is the stronghold of the anti-June 15 forces.
The GNP, prolonging its days on bread crumb falling from Washington's table, is trumpeting about its "certain victory" in the "election" through the ultra right conservative media. Hidden behind this is its crafty scheme to lead the forces for progressive reforms standing behind the June 15 joint declaration to give the match up in the voting.
What the GNP is most afraid of is judgment by the broad popular masses. The miserable defeat suffered by it in two "presidential elections" and the last "election to the national assembly" resulted from the stern judgment passed on it by the broad popular masses participating in the voting. The advertisement of "a sweeping victory" at every polling booth is what it invented to make the people abstain from voting at any cost. If the south Korean people stay away form voting, playing into its hand and losing confidence, the GNP which attaches more importance to the U.S. than the fellow countrymen will grab "local self-governing bodies" and use them for seizing "power".
Whether such development is checked or not depends on how the south Korean people exercise their right to vote.
Today when the highly important issue related to the life and death of the nation is decided, the south Korean people should fulfill their obligation to the nation.

Anniversary of Kim Il Sung's Work Observed

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung's famous work "Historical Experience of Building the Workers' Party of Korea" is a great encyclopedia for party construction as it comprehensively deals with the precious experience gained in the building of the party and its activities and exploits performed in the long period since a historic groundwork was laid for the founding of the WPK. The work has also served as important guidelines clearly indicating the ways for the WPK to successfully fulfill its mission and duty in the era as a guide of socialism. Rodong Sinmun today says this in a signed article dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the work.
The WPK is Kim Il Sung's great party because it has been trained in the crucible of the struggles waged for over half a century and has grown stronger to be an invincible party which has enjoyed the undisputed support and trust of the people under the wise leadership of the President, the article notes, and goes on:
What is important among the immortal exploits the President performed by creating a model of a revolutionary party in the era is that he built the WPK into an independent Party guided by the Juche idea and a militant Party strong in the sense of organization and discipline in such a far-sighted manner that it can successfully carry forward its cause generation after generation.
The idea and leadership of the President have been steadfastly carried forward by leader Kim Jong Il. The 40 odd year-long history of his leadership over the Party work is shinning as an immortal history in which he has developed it into the party of the President.
The last more than one decade occupies a distinguished place in the revolutionary history of Kim Jong Il who has led the cause of building the WPK. He has performed great immortal exploits by developing the WPK into an invincible militant Party and a powerful party making dynamic progress under the banner of Songun despite any hardships under the grave situation.

Ri Po Ik, Grandmother of Kim Il Sung

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Ri Po Ik, born on May 31, 1876, was an ardent patriot who saw off her children and grandchildren on the road to revolution and remained true to the principles of the revolutionary family of Mangyongdae and the spirit of the Korean nation in any adversity. She, grandmother of President Kim Il Sung, willingly devoted her life to the care of her children and grandchildren, who fought a bloody battle for national liberation.
She was never disappointed at the news that her children were put into jail and when she did not know their fate. She saw off her grandchildren on the very road covered by her elder son and unyieldingly fought against the Japanese imperialists.
It was in a winter in the latter half of the 1930s when the Japanese imperialists let renegades to the revolution launch a massive campaign for "surrender" against the Korean People's Revolutionary Army. They resorted to every possible means to inveigle her into the campaign.
The Japanese imperialists failed to bend her strong will with any appeasement, blackmail and threat. They forced her in her sixties into the blizzards of Manchuria where the temperature was around 40 degrees below zero.
She shouted at the enemies that she could not enter mountains as it was cold and she was tired. When they served Japanese dishes to her, she demanded them of Korean dishes.
After then they forced her again to go to rugged mountains of North Jiandao. She overcame all hardships with fortitude for months without yielding to the enemies like a mother and a grandmother of revolutionaries.
The upright life of Ri owes to her invariable faith that the struggle for sovereignty of the nation is just and sure to be crowned with victory.

Number of Smokers Decreases in DPRK

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- No-smoking campaign has been actively conducted in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. According to Choe Chang Sik, vice minister of Public Health, the smoking rate of the country went down by about 15 percent at present below 2000.

In order to decrease the smoking rate through such levers as cultivation, production and sale of tobacco, ties with tobacco producers and sellers have been made closer.
In particular, various methods and means including smoking-quit pills and smoking-quit pipes are being developed to help those give up smoking.
The anti-smoking campaign is further invigorated through mass media, art propaganda activities and health lectures.
A function was held at the People's Palace of Culture Wednesday on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, at which good experience in giving up smoking was introduced.
