S. Korean People Called to Defend Phyongthaek

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- The All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the U.S. Military Base in Phyongthaek of south Korea made public an appeal on Monday and called upon all the people to come out in the struggle to defend Phyongthaek. The appeal charged that the authorities were going to evacuate Taechu Primary School in Phaengsong Town, Phyongthaek City, Kyonggi Province, a stronghold of struggle against the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek, in a bid to requisition land of Phyongthaek and planned to arrest all resisting members of the committee and residents.
The appeal said that the move for the expansion of the Phyongthaek base is the action of not only threatening the peace of the Korean Peninsula fundamentally but also stamping out the vital rights of the residents.
The authorities are seriously mistaken if they think they can break the will of the people for struggle with the evacuation of the school, the appeal noted. No violent force will stop the blazing flame of the struggle for independent reunification and peace, the appeal said, calling upon all the people to take part in the sacred struggle to defend peace in this land and make a breakthrough of independence.

Koreans in Japan Protest against Human Rights Abuses by Japanese Reactionaries

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- Koreans in Japan lodged a strong protest with the Japanese reactionaries against their reckless human rights abuses as regards the fact that the Nagoya immigration office of Japan recently delayed the permission of the reentry applied for by Kim So Ja, chairperson of the Central Standing Committee of the Union of Democratic Korean Women in Japan. Officials of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) and the Aichi Prefectural Headquarters of Chongryon, Koreans and Japanese lawyers formed a measure committee and a protest group and, from February 28, staged a series of protest actions every day, demanding that the office permit her reentry immediately and its director make a written statement on the reason of withholding the permission. On the other hand, through the Japanese media, they brought to the knowledge of the Japanese that the behavior of the Japanese authorities was a serious act gravely violating and infringing upon the basic rights of Koreans in Japan.
Driven to the last ditch, the immigration office permitted her reentry on March 6. Thereupon, a ragtag collection of the "Society of Families of Abductees" and the "Society for Rescue," groups of Japanese right-wing reactionaries, called a "press conference", at which they put pressure upon the immigration office, shouting themselves hoarse that it was to be deplored that the office permitted the reentry of Kim So Ja who is an equivalent to a parliamentarian of north Korea. Such acts of the Japanese reactionaries without precedent invited a sharp protest from Chongryon officials and Koreans in Japan.
Ko Tok U, vice-chairman of the Chongryon Central Standing Committee and director of the Department for the Life of Compatriots, on March 6 appeared at a press conference in Tokyo and made public a statement denouncing the untenable behavior of the Japanese reactionaries. He said in the statement this behavior of the office went against the international human rights law and the relevant law of Japan and, having been committed shortly after the resumption of the talks between the DPRK and Japanese governments in February for the normalization of the relations between the two countries, it went against the trend of the times and the spirit of the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration in particular.
On the same day, the Aichi Prefectural Headquarters of Chongryon also called a press conference and sternly denounced the Japanese reactionaries for their violation of the human rights of Koreans in Japan. And the headquarters held an emergency meeting of Koreans under it on March 7 and decided to continue the protest action against the immigration office, regarding the incident as a matter concerning all the Koreans in Japan.

RS. on Foundations for Building Great Prosperous Powerful Nation

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- The army and the people of the DPRK have laid the solid political, ideological and material foundations for building a great prosperous powerful nation, pulling through all ordeals of history, rallied close around leader Kim Jong Il over more than ten years. Rodong Sinmun says this in a signed article Friday. It goes on:
Single-minded unity in which all the servicepersons and people are sharing destiny with the headquarters of the revolution to the last has been further consolidated, the defence capability of the country incomparably strengthened and the solid material foundation for building a rich and strong country laid. This is a most precious wealth for a new leap forward in the building of a great prosperous powerful nation. The achievements in socialist construction over the last 10-odd years are the victory of love and trust, the victory of loyalty and obligation achieved by the harmonious whole of the leader and the people.
The indomitable revolutionary spirit which helps to triumphantly advance the socialist cause in any adversity has been created. This is a very precious asset. It is the true feature of the Korean people who have personified the revolutionary soldier spirit to give full play to the spirit of devotedly defending the headquarters of the revolution, the spirit of devotedly carrying through the line and policies of the Workers' Party of Korea and the heroic self-sacrificing spirit displayed by soldiers of the People's Army.
The Party set forth the fighting tasks to make a new leap forward in socialist construction, proceeding from the conviction of the might of the revolutionary soldier spirit.
The solid material asset for an economic surge has been laid. This is a precious success in building a great prosperous powerful nation.
We have modern producers based on latest science and technology and the foundation with which to make anything we want. Solid is the pluck of the army and the people to make a great leap forward in building a great prosperous powerful nation on the basis of the solid economic potentials.
The solid foundation laid in the building of a great prosperous powerful nation is an eternal one for national prosperity achieved by Kim Jong Il while pulling through grim ordeals and difficulties under the uplifted banner of Songun.

U.S. "Defense Review Report" Flailed

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- The U.S. Department of Defense on Feb. 1 made public a "defense review report", which contains plans for the reinforcement of special armed forces, the increase of maneuverability of ground and air forces, the maintenance of the navy's capability of simultaneously operating on the sea and the coast and the intensified collection of information in 20 years to cope with "terrorism" and "threat". After all, the "report" is considered to be a long-term plan for aggressive military actions designed to conduct the "war on terrorism" on a worldwide scale, Rodong Sinmun today says in a signed article.
Branding the "report" as a document of aggression and war to realize the U.S. ambition for domination over the Asia-Pacific region and carry into overall practice the "strategy for preemptive attack", the article says:
What draws attention in the "report" is the simulation of a "dangerous state". The U.S. seeks to ignite a war against the DPRK at any cost so as to realize its wild ambition for domination over the whole of Korea and take it as a breakthrough in conquering Asia. That is why the U.S. intends to convert its forces in south Korea into "rapid task forces" under the pretext of "strategic flexibility" to escalate its military intervention in the Korean Peninsula and other parts of Asia. The "report" was worked out and announced at a time when humankind stands for peace against war more staunchly than ever before. It is an act of going against the trend of the times towards detente and an open challenge to humankind's desire for peace.
The world's peace-loving people should see through the aggressive nature of the U.S. imperialists and their ambition for world supremacy and wage a vigorous struggle against their aggression and war moves.

Famous Woman Scientists

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- Woman scientists at the Pharmacy Institute under the Academy of Medical Science of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are standing in the van of developing edge-cutting medical science. Among them is Dr. Ri Hui Suk, 69 years old, succeeded in developing fine Thaksol (Cuspidaxol) with raw materials abundant in the country in a unique way some time ago. The production cost of Thaksol is cheaper than that of vegetable broad-spectrum anticancer agent that has been monopolized by a few countries. Dr. Kim Myong Sim also successfully made nuamine, amino acid fluid, with protein from industrial by-products as raw materials. It is the first of its kind in the public health sector.
Woman scientists of the institute have rendered their wisdom and energy to survey and development of Koryo medicine resources. They have ascertained the ingredients and medicinal effects of more than 500 kinds of higher plants and bred a source plant of alkaloid.
The successes made in the research for putting the use of Koryo insam (ginseng) on a scientific basis and boosting the analysis of medicines to a higher level are also associated with their indefatigable efforts.
During the "Arduous March" and forced march, they never stopped researches, placing the interests of the country above those of their families. They improved types of drugs and the production method of digoxin and thus made a great contribution to the development of the pharmaceutical industry and the public health work. In those years many out of female scientists, who make up 40 percent of the researchers in the institute, were awarded academic degrees or titles.

Many Literary Works Created in DPRK

Among the works are over 40 poems and songs. Long poem "Stormy Life" eulogizes the immortal revolutionary life of leader Kim Jong Il, who is devoting himself for the prosperity of the nation and the happiness of the people.
The poems reflecting lofty spiritual world of the people to bring about the heyday of socialist construction with overall offensive and the thriving reality of the country include "Fatherland, forward under uplifted red flag of three revolutions", "My fatherland, let's effect higher leap" and "Oath taken on fresh onward march". Selected poems "Young people resemble Mt. Paektu" depict the reliable young men and women who are distinguishing themselves in the construction of the Paektusan Songun Youth Power Station in the van of the general onward march of the Songun revolution. "We will glorify the great nation of Mt. Paektu with arms" and other songs instill confidence and optimism for the future victory in the minds of all the servicepersons and people.
In particular, the resolution of the people to support the leader with noble loyalty and pure conscience generation after generation is reflected in song "Inheritance of our family" in a lyrical and profound way.
More than 20 short stories have been created. Among them are "Pillar", "Persimmon-apricot tree village" and "Sobaek Stream never freezes" showing greatness of the three generals of Mt. Paektu and "Seven and one" dealing with the revolutionary fighting spirit and way of work of servicepersons of the Korean People's Army. Over 60 literary works for children including short story "Our country", poem "New charming scenery", tale "Mysterious magnet" have been created which will be greatly conducive to the cognitive education of schoolchildren.

Its chemical elements good for health remain unchanged from thousands of years ago. It is very efficacious for chronic gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcers, diseases of urogenital system and chronic inflammatory diseases of biliary tract system. More than 5,100 liters of the mineral water spring out in the highland of 200 meters above the sea level a day.
A lot of people have their diseases treated free of charge at the Huichon Kwandae Mineral Water Sanatorium thanks to the popular health policy of the government.

Deserved Opposition to American-way of UN "Reform"

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- The United States' arbitrariness in the process of reforming the United Nations gives rise to the opposition and denunciation by the international community. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in a press interview held in the UN headquarters on March 2, expressed his dissatisfaction at the continued US rejection of the resolution for creation of a new Human Rights Council and urged the United States to change its stand.
The issue of the creation of the council in replace of the UN Committee on Human Rights was agreed at the UN summit in last September as a primary one for the UN reform.
With the serious disparity of opinions on the issue between developing countries and the Western countries including the United States, the president of the UN General Assembly presented a draft resolution compromising their opinions on February 23. According to it, the council will be composed of 47 nations and each member nation shall be elected with the approval of the majority of the UN members. It was supported by the Western European countries including UK, its ally, as well as developing countries. But the United States alone stands against it.
Bolton, US ambassador in the UN, persisted in the unilateral stand that a country can enter the council on the basis of meeting some conditions and winning support of two thirds of UN member nations and raved that his country could not accept the draft resolution.
From the beginning, the United States was displeased with the agreement of the UN summit on the issue and boycotted the negotiation for forming the council. Entering the year, it suddenly raised a hue and cry, saying that it would certainly bring into shape a fresher and stronger organization, what it calls human rights council. Today when a compromise suggestion on the formation of the Human Rights Council has been advanced to enjoy a wide support, the United States again resorts to a tacit trick.
It attaches this or that condition to the qualification for entering the council. This has nothing to do with the democratization of the United Nations, the essence of the UN reform.
The U.S. calculates that if the door of the council is narrowed, it is impossible for the countries, which have been charged with "human rights faults" by the American-way "human rights standard", to admit to the council. It, in the long run, intends to turn the council into a club swayed by pro-U.S.-countries and to realize the "color revolution" in sovereign nations.
The U.S. intends to make the council as "a new and powerful" means for "human rights" offensive against the anti-U.S. independent countries and for American-style "democratic revolution" in the whole world.
The question is not limited only to the issue of forming the United Nations Human Rights Council. The U.S. ignores the regional rotation principle which has been adhered to in the election of the UN secretary general and asserts that the right to appoint personnel of the United Nations and manage it should be handed over from the UN General Assembly to the secretariat of the UN secretary general. It is nothing but a trick to install a puppet of the United States in the chair of the secretary general and to realize the dictatorship over the UN through him.
The U.S. does not hesitate to threaten the international community, clamoring that if its demand on the UN reform is not accepted immediately, it will block the adoption of the UN budget. Even the New York Times exposed such threat discloses in relief the impression that the whole course of UN reform is one of usurping the power by the U.S. administration.
The UN "reform" persisted by the U.S. means, in essence, the expansion of the "anti-terror war" for realizing the American-way "liberal world" to the UN. All the facts prove this.
It, however, is a miscalculation. The U.S. is being further isolated in the UN arena for its high-handed arbitrariness.
VOA reported that the U.S.'s demand regarding the UN "reform" burst up the indignation of the G-77 which embraces 130-odd UN member nations. The brigandish and reckless intention of the U.S. to the UN arena as the object of the "anti-terror war" will come across greater opposition in the future.

Inter-Korean Women's Conference Held

Mt. Kumgang resort, March 10 (KCNA) -- A conference of women in the north and the south of Korea was held at Mt. Kumgang resort Friday to implement the June 15 joint declaration. It was attended by delegates from women organizations of the north and the south including Chairperson of the Women's Subcommittee of the North Side's Committee for the Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration Pak Sun Hui and Permanent Representative of the Women's Headquarters of the South Side's Committee for the Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration Jong Hyon Baek. Speeches were made at the conference.
They referred to the achievements made by the women in the north and the south in the movement to open a new epochal phase of national reunification in the past and called upon the women organizations in the north and the south to put the reunification movement on the orbit of the movement for independent national reunification in the basic idea of "By our nation itself" this year.
The women who account for half of Korea's population are now taking charge of one of the two wheels for national reunification, they said, calling upon the women in the north and the south to give full play to their energies, wisdom and enthusiasm in the movement for national reunification so as to actively contribute to peace and reunification of the country.
An appeal to the women in the north and the south was adopted at the conference. The division of the nation has brought all sorts of misfortune and sufferings to the 70 million fellow countrymen, the appeal said, calling upon the women in the north and the south to pool their efforts in the drive to prevent a war and terminate the military confrontation and remove all factors of threatening peace from this land. It also called upon the women organizations in the north and the south to further strengthen solidarity, unity and cooperation and thus increase the role of the women in the reunification movement and do their best to find a solution to the issue related to the "comfort women" for the Japanese army and eliminate the vestiges of Japanese imperialism.
