Kim Jong Il's Birthday Observed in Different Countries

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Functions were held in different countries in the period from Feb. 7 to 16 on the occasion of the birthday of leader Kim Jong Il. Seminars on Kim Jong Il's famous work "The Juche Philosophy Is an Original Revolutionary Philosophy" were held by the Party for Unity and Progress of Guinea, the Peru-Korea Friendship Institute for Study of the Juche-Based Songun Policy and the Indian Intellectuals' Society for the Study of the Juche Idea, and seminars on his exploits and film shows by the Peruvian Group for the Study of Kimilsungism, the People's Front of Workers, Peasants and Students of Peru, the Peruvian-Korean Institute of Culture and Friendship and the New Left Movement of Peru. Sekou Konate, general secretary of the Party for Unity and Progress of Guinea, said that the DPRK has confidently advanced along the road of socialism chosen by itself though socialism collapsed in the Eastern European countries one after another because the Workers' Party of Korea has been guided by the Juche idea. Roberto Carbonel Pezo, chairman of the Peru-Korea Friendship Institute for Study of the Juche-Based Songun Policy, noted that the Songun politics pursued by Kim Jong Il has served as the most unique politics because it was set out to meet the need of the era on the basis of the essence of the Juche philosophy and has displayed its vitality. V.K. Chopra, chairman of the Indian Intellectuals' Society for the Study of the Juche Idea, noted that the Korean people have firmly protected the dignity of the nation and the sovereignty of the country from the evermore intensified U.S. moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK as they have been guided by the Juche philosophy. Screened at the film shows were Korean films including "The Brilliant History of the Great Leadership" and "The Old Home in Mt. Paektu in All Its Glory".

Chairman of Labor Union Arrested by South Korean Police

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- The south Korean police arrested Jon Jae Hwan, chairman of the south Korean Federation of Metal Industrial Workers Unions, on Feb. 25, according to KBS of south Korea. Police have worked hard to arrest him since they issued a warrant of arrest to him on Jan. 20 on the charge that he led the general strike of the south Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) for the right of the part time workers at the end of last year when he was chairman of the Committee for Emergency Measures of the KCTU. Police arrested him when going to attend a meeting of the KCTU to be held in front of the building of the "National Assembly", KBS said.
That day more than 150 members of the KCTU held a meeting to denounce the police suppression of him in front of the Yongdungpho police station in Seoul where he is detained.

RS. Calls for Intensified Struggle for Independence against Outsiders

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- All the Koreans should wage a more dynamic struggle for independence against outside forces so as to defend the sovereignty of the nation and the peace of the country and successfully realize national unity and the cause of national reunification. Rodong Sinmun Wednesday says this in an editorial carried on the occasion of the 87th anniversary of the March 1 Popular Uprising. The March 1 Popular Uprising was an anti-Japanese patriotic struggle which proved that the Korean people were a people strong in the spirit of independence as they refused to be slaves of others and a brave and justice-loving people who fought against the aggressors and oppressors braving any sacrifices, the editorial notes, and goes on: Many years have passed since the uprising but the struggle of the Korean nation to put an end to the foreign aggression and domination and achieve the complete independence and sovereignty of the country and the nation is not over. It is the important task facing the Korean nation to oppose foreign forces' aggression and intervention, defend the sovereignty and security of the nation and achieve the independent reunification.
The U.S. imperialists' hostile policy toward the DPRK and their moves to start a new war and intensify their domination over south Korea and their interference in its internal affairs are the main factor of encroaching upon the sovereignty and dignity of the Korean nation and blocking the peace of the country and its independent reunification.
The Japanese reactionaries are escalating their vicious moves against the DPRK while zealously joining the U.S. in its moves to stifle the DPRK, far from making an apology and compensation for the crimes committed by the Japanese imperialists against the Korean nation in the past.
The editorial calls for waging a dynamic patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity under the banner of "By our nation itself" in order to check and frustrate foreign forces' brigandish moves for aggression and war and defend the sovereignty and security of the nation.

Sports Contest for Paektusan Cup Closes

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- The Sports Contest for Paektusan Cup, which was opened on the occasion of the February holiday, closed with due ceremony at the Basketball Gymnasium in Chongchun Street on Tuesday. The April 25 Sports Group won the titles in men's and women's basketball and volleyball events while girls of this group and boys of the Rimyongsu Sports Group came first in football events by displaying a high degree of teamwork and persevering spirit. At the ceremony prizes were awarded to the groups and players that proved successful in the contest.
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission Mun Jae Dok called on all the players, coaches and officials to set high goals and steadily acquire sporting methods and technique of Korean style to achieve a signal success in the sports activities for this year.

Staff Members of Russian Embassy Help Korean Farmers

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Andrei Karlov and staff members of his embassy visited the Korea-Russia Friendship Kochang Cooperative Farm Tuesday to help its members in farm work. They helped farmers in spreading compost on a field. During break they sang songs together and exchanged conversations, deepening the friendship. The Russian ambassador said that the DPRK singled out agriculture as the main front of economic construction, wishing the farm success in its agricultural production this year.
The Russian diplomats went round the room devoted to the history of the farm and handed materials for farming to it.

Japanese High Court's Ruling against Chongryon Assailed

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Recently the Fukuoka High Court ruled that the tax exemption of the Korean Hall in Kumamoto, Japan, should be canceled. This comes under fire by a signed commentary of Minju Joson Wednesday. The commentary says:
The above-said decision was a totally unfair judgment as it ignored the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), a dignified overseas organization of the DPRK, and the national rights of the Koreans in Japan and grossly violated them.
The commentary cites facts proving how Japan has intensified its suppression of Chongryon and Koreans in Japan even since it signed the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration in which it promised to honestly discuss the issue of the status of the Koreans in Japan. The above-mentioned judgment was made as an extension of its anti-Chongryon moves, the commentary says, and goes on:
The Japanese reactionaries' desperate moves against Chongryon are aimed to stamp out Chongryon and realize their ambition to stage a comeback to Korea without fail. The DPRK will never look with folded arms on Japan's unjustifiable suppression of Chongryon. Japan should stop those wicked moves against Chongryon at once, deeply mindful of this. If Japan persists in these actions against Chongryon, it will be entirely accountable for the ensuing grave consequences.

U.S. Urged to Pay for Crimes Committed against Koreans

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the North Side Headquarters of the Nationwide Special Committee for Probing the Truth behind the GIs' Crimes in a statement on Feb. 28 demanded the U.S. apologize for the massacre of civilians in Rogun-ri and all other crimes committed by it against Koreans and opt for fully compensating for them as ex-U.S. President Clinton had promised. In January 2001 Clinton admitted the mass killing of civilians perpetrated by U.S. imperialist aggression forces in Rogun-ri of North Chungchong Province during the last Korean War and promised to compensate for it.
But the U.S. has worked hard to hide the barbarous massacre of civilians committed by its troops during the war under the crafty signboard of erecting a "monument", far from making an apology and compensation up to this date though five years have passed since then.
This betrays the U.S. black-hearted intention to distort and justify its blood-stained history of genocide and calm down the towering grudge and resentment and ever-mounting anti-Americanism of the south Korean people at any cost and perpetuate its forces' presence in south Korea to go on with wrongs, the statement said, and went on: It is preposterous and nothing but a sheer charade for the U.S. to talk about the "human rights issues" of others as it is chiefly to blame for man-killing and all sorts of crimes against humanity.
All the Koreans will never forget the massacre committed by the U.S. but take a thousand-fold revenge upon it.
As long as the U.S. imperialist forces of aggression stay in south Korea, it is impossible to defend the dignity of the nation and the sovereignty and peace of the country, the statement said, expressing the expectation that various organizations and people from all walks of life in the south would turn out in a dynamic anti-U.S. struggle to force the U.S. forces, the root cause of all sorts of misfortune and sufferings the Koreans have undergone, to withdraw from south Korea as early as possible.

Seminar of Officials in Field of Social Sciences Held

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- A seminar of officials in the field of social sciences was held Tuesday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historical meeting in Nanhutou guided by President Kim Il Sung. Kim Il Sung made a historical report titled "The Tasks of Communists in the Strengthening and Development of the Anti-Japanese National-Liberation Struggle" at the meeting of the military and political cadres of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army held in Nanhutou in February of Juche 25(1936).
The participants of the seminar heard five papers that made a scientific and theoretical explanation of the historical significance and vitality of the meeting. The speakers including Dr. and associate Prof. Song Tong Won, director of an institute of the Academy of Social Sciences, said that the meeting marked an event that meant a new milestone in bringing about a great surge in the anti-Japanese national-liberation struggle in Korea centered on the anti-Japanese armed struggle under the banner of Juche and explained the reason.
It was the strategic target and unchangeable faith Kim Il Sung consistently adhered to from the day when he declared the anti-Japanese war to expand the armed struggle into the homeland and achieve its liberation with arms, they noted, and continued: The meeting brought about a dramatic turn in the struggle for achieving the cause of founding a revolutionary party of Juche type, radically turned the movement of the anti-Japanese national united front into a nationwide movement and paved a broad way for its uniform development.
To defend and carry forward and develop the tradition of establishing Juche created in the crucible of the anti-Japanese war provides a sure guarantee for strengthening the driving force for the Korean revolution in every way and increasing its might significantly under the banner of the great Songun idea so that it may remain boundlessly faithful to the Songun leadership of Kim Jong Il. Present at the seminar were Choe Thae Bok, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Thae Hyong Chol, president of the Academy of Social Sciences, officials, teachers, researchers and lecturers in the fields of science, education, party cadre-training institutions and the preservation of revolutionary relics.

Extraordinary Meeting of Co-Chairmen of Pomminryon Held

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- An extraordinary meeting of co-chairmen of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification (Pomminryon) of the north, south and overseas sides was held Tuesday by way of exchanging facsimile messages. The meeting attended by the co-chairmen of the north, south and overseas headquarters of Pomminryon discussed the orientation of the movement for national reunification for 2006.
    A report was made there.
The meeting recalled that last year all the Koreans in the north and the south and abroad waged a dynamic struggle to realize the cooperation for national independence, peace against war and reunification and patriotism under the banner of the June 15 joint declaration and formed the June 15 national joint committee while representatives of non-governmental organizations and authorities in the north and the south visited Pyongyang and Seoul to hold grand festivals for reunification in grand style. This year marks the lapse of 140 years since USS "General Sherman's" intrusion into Korea, 30 years since the start of the "Team Spirit" joint military exercises and 40 years since the conclusion of SOFA, the meeting said, calling upon Pomminryon to join all the fellow countrymen who love peace and desire reunification in the drive to resolutely check the reckless war moves of the anti-reunification forces and remove the root cause of a nuclear war from this land through a nationwide struggle for the withdrawal of the U.S. forces.
The meeting called upon Pomminryon to achieve solidarity and alliance with all the forces supporting the June 15 joint declaration and deal telling blows at the pro-U.S. conservative forces including the Grand National Party keen to prolong their remaining days while currying favor with the United States.
A resolution adopted at the meeting said that this year Pomminryon will take the lead in the three-point patriotic movement under the slogan "Let's wage a dynamic patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity under the uplifted banner of 'By our nation itself'!"
The resolution noted that Pomminryon would conduct a vigorous movement for independent reunification through nationwide solidarity and alliance under the banner of "By our nation itself" and make it a tradition to grandly celebrate June 15 when the historic joint declaration was published as the "day of by our nation itself". Pomminryon will wage a persistent struggle to have the "National Security Law" abolished in south Korea and the south headquarters of Pomminryon and Pomchonghakryon (the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification) and the south Korean Federation of University Student Councils legalized and further strengthen solidarity and unity with broad mass movement organizations to steadily expand its organization.

March First Popular Uprising

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Eighty-seven years have passed since the March First Popular Uprising in Korea. The Japanese imperialists occupied Korea by force of arms in the early period of the 20th century and enforced the brutal military government. The pent-up national resentment and a deep-rooted rancor of the Korean people against the aggressors burst into a nation-wide anti-Japanese resistance on March 1, Juche 8 (1919). The March First Popular Uprising started with a mass independence demonstration in Pyongyang.
A representative of youth and students read out the "Declaration of Independence" before thousands of people at the school playground on Jangdae Hill, solemnly declaring that Korea was an independent state.
That day in Seoul, too, an anti-Japanese demonstration took place, the participants of which totaled hundreds of thousands.
Governor-general Hasegawa mobilized armed forces to mercilessly put down the demonstration. Streets of Seoul turned into a sea of blood in an instant. The demonstrators marched forward over their fellows who fell down, keeping the ranks. When a young girl student had her right arm that held the national flag cut off by an enemy sword, she took the flag in her left hand and, when she was unable to move any further having had her left arm cut off, too, she continued to shout "Long live the independence of Korea!" striking terror into the hearts of the Japanese imperialist soldiers and policemen.
The flames of the uprising spread all over the 13 provinces of the country. The uprising, which gradually assumed a violent character, was participated in by more than two million people of all strata by the end of May.
The number of demonstrations and riots that took place across the country till December that year amounted to more than 3,200.
During the uprising which lasted nearly a year, over one hundred thousands of demonstrators were killed at the point of bayonet of the Japanese imperialist soldiers and policemen. Nearly 46,700 patriotic people were imprisoned in the homeland only on May 31.
The March First Popular Uprising, which ended in a failure owing to the brutal suppression by the Japanese imperialists, taught the Korean revolutionaries and patriotic people a bloody lesson that they should encounter the armed enemies with an organizational armed struggle.

Nyongbyon Silk Mill

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- The Nyongbyon Silk Mill is located in Nyongbyon County, North Phyongan Province, which has been famous in Korea for its picturesque scenery from olden times. The mill with nearly 60 years of history is weaving various kinds of quality silk fabrics which are popular at home and abroad. Its famous Kuryongdan and Yaksandan silk fabrics are named after the River Kuryong and Mt. Yak (Yaksan) in the county. In the 1980s, the mill had increased the production of various kinds of silk fabrics with graceful patterns and beautiful colors year after year.
But it had to suspend its operation for the lack of raw and other materials and electricity during the "Arduous March" in the 1990s.
Leader Kim Jong Il called at the mill in June, Juche 89 (2000). After acquainting himself with its actual conditions, he clearly indicated the way to be taken by it and took measures for putting its production on normal track.
The mill, therefore, has completed a technical process in its own way to produce tens of kinds of quality suit cloth, suitable to the actual conditions in a short span of time. It has also introduced computer programs into the pattern designing and increased the production of silk cloth of various colors and patterns. The products including cloth for wedding dress of bride and ceremonial dress of the aged on their 60th or 70th birthdays and for quilts are very popular among consumers.
The workers of the mill are all out in the general onward march of the Songun revolution, making redoubled efforts to mass-produce fabrics of various kinds suitable to the taste of the people.

Present there from the north side were Kim Sok Hwan, chairman of the Measure Committee for the Retaking the "Monument to the Victory in the Battle in the Northern Area of Korea", Sim Sang Jin, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Korean Buddhist Federation, and other officials concerned and from the south side Om Thae Jong, chairman of the Central Committee of the National Movement for the Monument, Kim Won Ung and Yu Hong Jun, co-chairmen of the Committee for Promoting the Retrieval of the Monument, and other officials concerned.
A report on how the monument has been retrieved was made at the ceremony. Then followed speeches.
An anti-Japanese statement was made public.

Strategy for "Spreading American-Style Freedom and Democracy" under Fire

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- A movement is now going on in the U.S. and other countries to disclose and condemn the essence and reactionary and deceptive nature of the strategy for "spreading American-style freedom and democracy" much touted by the Bush administration. Rodong Sinmun today observes in a signed article in this regard: The U.S. move for "spreading freedom and democracy" has become the root cause of infringing upon the sovereignty of other countries, disturbing world peace and stability and complicating the international situation as it is nothing but a means of perpetrating aggression and intervention against other countries. The U.S. loudmouthed "freedom" and "democracy" are nothing but a version of its strategy for "peaceful transition".
Its real aim is to degenerate the anti-imperialist and independent countries and those countries of military and strategic importance through the "spread of American-style freedom and democracy" and put them under its control.
The U.S. imperialists are using the carrot and the stick for "spreading American-style freedom and democracy".
The Bush administration seeks to tarnish the images of the countries falling out of its favor and internationally isolate them through sheer false propaganda and create discontent and social unrest in those countries through an ideological and cultural offensive and a destabilizing operation in a bid to realize regime changes there. To this end the U.S. allocates one billion U.S. dollars to bring down governments of other countries every year.
The world can never be peaceful and the development of fair international relations is unthinkable so long as the U.S. persists in its dominationist moves for "spreading American-style freedom and democracy."
It is preposterous for the U.S. to talk about "freedom" and "democracy" as it is the world's biggest sponsor of state terrorism and the worst human rights abuser. This is a mockery of genuine freedom and democracy.
The U.S. would be well advised to abandon its attempt to attain its dominationist aim through the "spread of hypocritical freedom and democracy".

Korean Pro-Boxer Retains WBC Super Flyweight Title

Tokyo, February 28 (KNS-KCNA) -- Korean pro-boxer Hong Chang Su in Japan eliminated U.S. challenger Jose Navarro who is also pro-box star in the super flyweight category to defend WBC title held in Osaka, Japan, on Feb 27, retaining his world championship. Hong reclaimed the world title in a match with a Japanese boxer last July. The victory that day improved Hong's record to hold the 9th world championship in total. From the start of the round Hong took the initiative in the match. He gave the American rival strong punches such as successive right-left combinations and left jab, completely putting him on the defensive.
Jose came in on a desperate counterattack upon Hong in spite of opening up a cut above his right eye. But this proved futile in face of Hong's staunch fighting spirit, fierce attack and high technique.
Hong eliminated Jose 3:0 in the twelve rounds of the match by a unanimous decision.

Anniversary of Kim Jong Il's Work Observed

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today dedicates a signed article to the 13th anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il's famous work "Abuses of Socialism Are Intolerable". The article says:
What is important in the ideas and theories clarified in the work is that it made a profound exposition of the issue of making socialism conviction and ethics. Only when all the members of society have unshakable faith in socialism and regard it as their moral duty to defend it is it possible to creditably carry forward the cause of socialism and achieve its final victory.
What is important for making socialism one's conviction and ethics is to have an unshakable idea and will for socialism and regard it a moral duty to defend socialism. We have the path of socialism to cover, the road of justice chosen by ourselves no matter which way others may follow and our socialist way of living is the best no matter what others may say. This is the faith of the Korean people.
Their revolutionary conscience and sense of moral obligation are based on the firm conviction that to defend Korean-style socialism and glorify it precisely means defending and glorifying the destiny and future of themselves and their posterity. What is also important for making socialism conviction and ethics is that the party and state should correctly conduct socialist construction to meet requirements of the popular masses for independence and their interests.
Kim Jong Il in the work clarified the idea that the nature of a working-class party and a socialist regime is to serve the people, the idea that all officials should have the spirit of faithfully serving the people and the idea of attaching importance to remoulding man's ideological consciousness and the idea of strengthening the working-class party and state guidance to economy and preserving the socialist ownership and other theoretical and practical issues to be considered as guidelines for successfully building socialism.
Korean-style socialism is winning one victory after another thanks to the absolute support and trust of the popular masses. This would be unthinkable without the popular policy of the Workers' Party of Korea.

S. Korean Authorities' Cooperation with Outside Forces in War Moves under Fire

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- The DPRK will never tolerate such pro-U.S. sycophantic and treacherous acts of the south Korean warlike military forces as hamstringing the implementation of the June 15 joint declaration, bedeviling the inter-Korean relations to drive the situation on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war by cooperating with foreign aggressor forces in their war moves, Rodong Sinmun today warns this in a signed article. It goes on:
The south Korean authorities are persistently involved in the U.S. war exercises targeted against the north under the signboards of "PSI" and "Ulji Focus Lens." They are tightening the military collusion and nexus with the U.S. by agreeing on the "strategic flexibility" of the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces in south Korea. This is nothing but a foolish and suicidal act to encourage the U.S. imperialist warlike quarters in the war moves against the north and start a war on the Korean Peninsula. "Cooperation" with foreign aggressor forces only leads to the escalation of military tension, stokes distrust and confrontation among compatriots, blocks the process to warm up the inter-Korean relations and results in the outbreak of a war against compatriots in the end.
"Cooperation" with outside forces in war moves, conspiracy and collusion with aggressors is an unpardonable perfidy as it runs counter to the basic spirit of the historical June 15 joint declaration.
South Korea's continued "cooperation" with outside forces in war moves may disturb peace on the Korean Peninsula and have an irretrievable serious impact on the development of the inter-Korean relations. "Cooperation" with outside forces in war moves can never be justified as it is aimed at scrapping the June 15 joint declaration and hamstringing its implementation.
Military conspiracy and collusion with outside forces is little short of a very dangerous war gambling as it can trigger off a war against the north.

Joint Declaration of North and South Sides Published

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- The Central Committee of the Chondoist Chongu Party and the Council for the Reunification of Tangun's Nation from the north side and the Society for the Reunification of Tonghak's Nation and the General Federation of National Movement Camp from the south side published a joint declaration in which they agreed to set the period of the three-point patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity till November 17 when the "Ulsa Five-point Treaty" was fabricated by the Japanese imperialists and wage a dynamic joint struggle. The joint declaration was published in Pyongyang and Seoul Wednesday on the occasion of the 87th anniversary of the patriotic March 1 Popular Uprising. The joint declaration bitterly denounced Japan for working hard to stage a comeback to Korea, far from making an apology and compensation for the crimes committed by it against the Korean nation.
We will conduct a valiant movement for independent reunification against foreign forces so as to dynamically advance along the road of independent reunification this year while giving full play to the spirit of attaching importance to the nation, the Korean nation-first spirit, placing the dignity and interests of the nation above anything else, true to the idea of "By our nation itself", the joint declaration noted. Calling upon all the Koreans to turn out as one in the patriotic movement for peace against war, it said:
The danger of nuclear disasters is increasing on this land day by day due to outside forces and Japan is escalating its moves for militarization by availing itself of this opportunity. Only when all the fellow countrymen turn out in the struggle for peace against war in a do-or-die spirit at this juncture is it possible to prevent disasters of a nuclear war and bring a rosy future of national reunification. Stressing the need to take the lead in the movement for great national unity, it said: In order to foil the collusion and challenge of the treacherous conservatives and achieve the dignity of the nation, all the national movement forces and reunification movement organizations in the north and the south should achieve positive solidarity and alliance and transcend the difference in religious beliefs, political groupings and affiliation.
We ardently call upon the 70 million Koreans to achieve the great national unity under the uplifted banner of the June 15 joint declaration this year and thus vigorously pave a new wide avenue for accomplishing the cause of national reunification, it concluded.
