World No-Tobacco Day Observed

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- A function was held at the Koryo Medicine Institute on May 30 to mark the World No-Tobacco Day. Present there were Choe Chang Sik, vice-minister of Public Health of the DPRK, Tej Walia, representative a.i. of the WHO in Pyongyang, staff members of missions of international organizations and the British ambassador to the DPRK.
Choe in his opening speech called on the medical workers to take an active part in the campaign to urge people to quit smoking for the health of the rising generation and their own health.
Referring to the fact that the smoking rate in the DPRK is considerably lower than that in the past, he stressed the need for the medical workers to successfully conduct a campaign to increase the quit-smoking atmosphere and take every opportunity of helping the people stop smoking.
He called for activities to direct greater social attention to protecting sick people and women and children, in particular, from the harm done by smokers and expanding the scope and width of the non-smoking places in a bid to help people quit smoking.
Then Tej Walia made a congratulatory speech.
Then the floor was taken by participants who pointed to the need to conduct a positive campaign for preventing the outbreak of diverse diseases due to smoking and a no-smoking campaign of diverse forms.
The participants looked round the photographs showing the medical workers' rules to govern their activities to restrict smoking and the harm done by smoking to human bodies and its consequences, exhibits on things popular in no-smoking campaigns and treatment rooms.
The day was observed in local areas of the country, too.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Concurrently Foreign Minister Interviewed

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- No matter how desperate the imperialists may become in their moves against the DPRK, they can not conquer the DPRK where the whole party and army and all the people are firmly rallied behind leader Kim Jong Il. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Laos Somsavath Lengsavath, member of the C.C., the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and chairman of the Commission for External Affairs of its Central Committee, said this on May 30 when interviewed by KCNA while staying in the DPRK at the head of its delegation.
He said that he was very pleased to revisit the DPRK with the desire to boost the friendly ties between the two parties and the two countries.
Noting that the bilateral ties of friendship were provided by Kaysone Phomvihane and President Kim Il Sung, the leaders of the two countries, he said that these ties are now growing stronger under the deep care of Khamtay Siphandone and Kim Jong Il.
He said that visiting various places during its stay in the DPRK the delegation saw for itself the Korean people in their vigorous drive to significantly greet the 60th anniversaries of the foundation of the Workers' Party of Korea and Korea's liberation and had an opportunity to visit the Korean Revolution Museum where it came to know better about how wisely Kim Jong Il has led the Korean revolution by carrying forward the cause of the President since his demise.
He expressed firm conviction that the Korean people would firmly defend the socialist gains, build a great prosperous powerful nation and surely reunify the country under the wise steermanship of Kim Jong Il.

U.S. Projected Creation of "Rapid Task Force" under Fire

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- U.S. President Bush recently talked about the need to create a "rapid task force" capable of coping with the crisis in those countries that fight for freedom or to be free from dictatorship. He blustered that this force would be on stand-by so that it may rush to "regions" required for its substantial operations within days or weeks, not months or years. Rodong Sinmun Tuesday carries a signed commentary in this regard.
The "spread of freedom and democracy" touted by the U.S. means the worldwide spread of the U.S. view on value and political mode, the commentary observes, and goes on: The proposed creation of the force is part of Washington's moves to put the theory of "worldwide spread of freedom and democracy" into practice.
The "spread of freedom and democracy", the keynote of the foreign policy of the Bush administration, is nothing but an intention to escalate the "war on terrorism" worldwide and it is mainly targeting independent countries.
The Bush group dared brand those countries which go independent, disobedient to it, as "rogue states" and "dangerous forces". As if it were not enough with this, it labeled them "outposts of tyranny" in a desperate bid to seek regime changes there and bring down their systems.
The Bush forces asserted that if they rise up for freedom, the U.S. will join them. This is an outright agitation for internal disturbance and coup and little short of a declaration of aggression to carry out military operation to bring down systems under the pretext of "chaos" or "request for assistance".
Being a detached force to bring down the systems in other countries, the above-mentioned force is mainly targeted against the independent countries and aimed to operate worldwide.
It is beyond doubt that its creation and intensified activities would disturb the world, inflicting greater misfortune and disaster upon the people.
It is quite doubtless that the proposed force will primarily target against the DPRK, the commentary says, adding its army and people will keep themselves fully ready to go into action with high revolutionary vigilance against the U.S. evermore desperate and dangerous moves to bring down the system in the country.

American Heavyweights' Reckless Remarks Flailed

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Most recently the chairman of the Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs of the International Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives let loose a whole string of balderdash against the south Korean authorities. He said that to distance oneself from other counties under the pretence of independence might bring a political benefit in the short term but one may doubt whether it is a wise policy in the long term. He even went the lengths of uttering that the south Korea-U.S. alliance has made a substantial contribution to political and economic stability and progress.
In this regard Minju Joson Tuesday in a signed commentary says that it is something unprecedented that U.S. high-ranking officials vied with each other to fault the south Korean authorities' use of the word "independence" at official meetings in a bid to press them to boost the alliance with the U.S. It continues:
In fact, the U.S. has reduced south Korea to its colony under the unctuous name of "alliance," wantonly infringing upon its sovereignty and imposing division, confrontation and war on the Korean nation. As a result, Korea was divided into the north and the south against its people's wishes and suffered the three year-long war disaster. The south Korean people underwent such tragedy as the massacre in Kwangju. Many young south Koreans are serving the U.S. as cannon fodder in shambles of U.S. war of aggression. This is the true nature of the U.S. loudmouthed "alliance" and "contribution".
If the U.S. persists in its military presence and colonial rule over south Korea, it will not be able to escape the nation-wide fierce anti-U.S. resistance but forced out of south Korea with disgrace.

Aim of "Strategic Flexibility" Debunked

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- The United States is currently trying to force south Korea to accept "strategic flexibility." Commenting on it, a Minju Joson analyst Tuesday brands it as one revealing the invariable scheme of the U.S. to deal a preemptive nuclear strike at the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region and create a sphere of its military domination there. "Strategic flexibility" sought by the U.S. is nothing but a new war strategy to realize its invariable wild design to place the whole of the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region under its military control with south Korea as the stronghold, the analyst notes, and goes on:
The keynote of the "strategic flexibility" is to expand the role of the U.S. forces present in south Korea so as to swiftly respond to "a contingency" on the Korean Peninsula and "unexpected incident" in any other area.
The U.S. pursuance of an enlarged role of its forces in south Korea allegedly for a swift response to "a contingency" on the Korean Peninsula is, to all intents and purposes, little short of a scheme to put fresh muscles into its moves for a new war of aggression in and around the peninsula.
Now the army and the people of the DPRK are keeping a sharp watch on the "strategic flexibility" pursued by the U.S. with a high degree of alertness and full preparedness.
The U.S. should look squarely into the reality and stop all its maneuvers to attain its aggressive purposes.
Should the U.S. persistently pursue a preemptive nuclear attack and creation of a sphere of its military domination on the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region, averting its eyes from the reality, it would be held entirely accountable for all the consequences arising from this.

U.S. Troop Pullout from S. Korea Demanded

Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- South Korean organizations reportedly called a joint press conference on May 27 and made public a letter of protest to the commander of the U.S. forces present in south Korea. They were the Reunification Solidarity, the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification, the People for Achieving Peace and Reunification, the Phaengsong-up Measure Committee for Opposing the Expansion of the U.S. Military Base and the Kwangju-South Jolla Provincial Measure Committee for Shutdown of U.S."Patriot" Base at Kwangju Airport and the withdrawal of the U.S.Forces.
The U.S. forces are a cancer-like existence which has brought misfortunes of all descriptions to the Korean nation, occupying this land over the last six decades, the letter said, and continued:
The U.S. openly declared a highly dangerous plan of a nuclear attack on the Korean nation and is bringing the situation on the Korean Peninsula to a high pitch of strain so as to realize its despicable ambition for world supremacy in disregard of the struggle of various social strata bitterly denouncing its all manner of disgraceful behavior and war moves.
The U.S. gravely violated democracy by bringing a dictatorial "government" on the scene in south Korea and is now fostering inter-Korean military confrontation.
We have never transferred or lent operational commandership to the commander of the U.S. forces stationed in south Korea.
The commander should immediately surrender the wartime operational commandership and the U.S. should withdraw its forces from south Korea at once.

Guidebook and Album Published

Tokyo, May 29 (KNS-KCNA) -- The General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) published guidebook "Chongryon" and album "Glorious Path Covered by Chongryon" in the run-up to the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Korea and on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the formation of Chongryon. The guidebook introduces in detail what type of organization Chongryon is and what praiseworthy activities it has conducted as a model of the overseas compatriots movement under the paternal loving care of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il.
The guidebook recalls that Korean patriotic activists and compatriots in Japan made strenuous efforts to carry out Kim Il Sung's policy of making a switchover to the Juche-oriented line and at last they formed Chongryon, the first overseas compatriots organization of Juche type, on May 25, Juche 44 (1955). It explains in a manner easy to understand the nature, the principle of activities, the organizational line-up and the structure of Chongryon.
It has such appendix as a diary of 50-year-long major activities and a chart on the distribution of its organs at all levels and schools under Chongryon. The album carries in chronological order historical photos showing Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il receiving different delegations and visiting groups of Chongryon to the homeland and clearly indicating the ways to be followed by Chongryon at every stage and in each period during their trips.
Also seen on the album are photos and posters showing the patriotic movements waged by Chongryon officials and compatriots as campaigns involving all its organizations and compatriots, single-mindedly united around Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.
