S. Korean Authorities' Scheme to Register DMZ as World's Heritage Lambasted

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland in a statement Monday condemned the scheme of the south Korean authorities to register the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the Military Demarcation Line as a world's heritage and open it to international tourism, branding it as a vicious challenge to the aspiration and desire of all the fellow countrymen for the reunification of the country and an anti-national folly to perpetuate the division of the nation. It is a behavior bereft of common sense to register as a "heritage" the DMZ which is symbolic of misfortunes and sufferings of national division and along which the north and the south are standing in acute military confrontation, the spokesman said, and went on:
Along the DMZ towns and villages which had once been cradles of life of people have disappeared without leaving a trace and roads, bridges and pylons which had linked the north and the south as one territory remain a symbol of pains and grievances of division owing to the barbed-wire entanglements and concrete wall running across the waist of the country, bisecting it. It is only too clear that this zone cannot be a "heritage."
To want to register and preserve the DMZ as a world's "heritage" is a disgrace and shame to the nation. The DMZ dividing one territory into two should not be preserved but be totally removed together with the barbed-wire entanglements and concrete wall of division and the country be reunified into one.
Recalling that the International Court of Justice and the United Nations some time ago adopted a resolution on opposing the building of artificial walls in some countries and demanding their immediate demolition, the spokesman urged the south Korean authorities not to dream of making money on the DMZ but to make a bold decision to pull down the concrete wall first of all for the sake of national reunification, looking straight into the aspiration of the nation and the trend of the times.

KCNA Dismisses Story about DPRK's Pursuance of "Uranium Enrichment Program"

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- There is public opinion in the United States that the story about the DPRK's development of "uranium enrichment" was deliberately faked up by the Bush administration to prevent the inter-Korean and the DPRK-Japan relations from improving. Selig Harison, senior researcher at the U.S. International Policy Center, in an article criticized the Bush administration for hyping up the threat caused by uranium, asking it if the administration has any evidence to support its assertion that north Korea has developed weapon-grade uranium enrichment facilities.
The story about the DPRK's uranium enrichment program much touted by the U.S. is nothing but groundless and base propaganda. It was a product of the despicable plot hatched by ultra neo-conservatives of the U.S. in the wake of U.S. presidential envoy Kelly's Pyongyang visit in October 2002.
The U.S. asserted that the DPRK must scrap its nuclear program first and it has been pursuing a uranium enrichment program at the several rounds of the six-party talks and other working-level talks only to be rebuffed. It is well known to everybody that far from drawing a proper lesson from this, the U.S. has persistently raised hue and cry over the program and even peddled the story about Pyongyang's "secret sale of uranium hexafluoride" to make its story sound plausible.
The aim sought by the U.S. in this is to isolate and strangle the DPRK by laying an international siege to it after charging it with nuclear weapons development and, furthermore, topple its political system.
It is a trite method employed by the Bush administration to fabricate misinformation and encroach upon the independence of sovereign countries on its basis. This is clearly proved by its aggression against Iraq.
It is a widely known fact that the Bush administration first raised the issue of the development of weapons of mass destruction to invent a pretext to invade Iraq, disarmed it through arms inspection and then brought down its legitimate government.
The U.S. seems to try to repeat what it did in Iraq in the DPRK. But that is a pipedream.
The U.S. moves to pressurize the DPRK over its nuclear issue and its adventurous attempt to provoke a nuclear war against it have resulted in totally overturning the groundwork for the dialogue between the DPRK and the U.S. for a solution to the nuclear issue and escalating the military tension on the Korean peninsula and this put it on the verge of a war.
It is the established war scenario of the U.S. to launch an all-out nuclear war on the peninsula and escalate it into its surrounding areas.
This military strategy of the U.S. will inevitably spark off confrontation and clashes in Northeast Asia, to say nothing of the Korean peninsula, as it is aimed to establish its unchallenged domination over the region.
The U.S. invasion of the DPRK would lead to another world war.
The U.S. had better ponder cool-headedly over the grave consequences to be entailed by the outbreak of a war and stop its policy of pressure upon the DPRK over the nuclear issue and confrontation with it, going against the trend of the times.

South Korea's Arms Buildup under Fire

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- The Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland Monday issued information bulletin No. 886 assailing the south Korean authorities' recent decision to increase the "defense budget" for next year 9.9 percent over this year's. It denounced the south Korean authorities' moves for arms buildup as an intolerable criminal act to increase the tensions on the Korean peninsula and bring the inter-Korean relations back to a military confrontation and a phase of war.
    The bulletin continued:
Grumbling that the "reduction" of the U.S. forces in south Korea would create a sort of "security vacuum," the south Korean authorities are sharply increasing the military expenditure and accelerating arms buildup to keep pace with the U.S. moves to bolster its forces. This is little short of fanning up the U.S. moves for a war against fellow countrymen.
The south Korean authorities are joining the U.S. in its war moves against the north while paying lip-service to "reconciliation" and "peace." This despicable double-dealing attitude only arouses the whole nation's curses and denunciation. It is the trait and pluck of the army and people of the DPRK to react against a provocation with a retaliation, and a challenge with a merciless blow.
The south Korean authorities should stop at once their reckless moves for arms buildup, pondering over the serious consequences to be entailed by their moves for military confrontation with north, it urged.

Repeal of S. Korea-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty Demanded

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- The Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration reportedly published a statement on October 1 with regard to the lapse of 51 years after the signing of the shameful south Korea-U.S. "mutual defense treaty". In the statement it called for an early repeal of the treaty and an end to the military occupation by the U.S. forces. The treaty aimed to keep the U.S. forces in south Korea permanently is little short of a slave pact which legally backs the U.S. intervention and domination, said the statement.
It charged that the U.S. had legalized the occupation of south Korea by its forces and massively introduced ultra modern lethal weapons and military hardware there on the strength of the treaty for more than a half century, rendering the situation of the Korean peninsula constantly strained.

Film Show on German National Day

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- A film show was given by the DPRK-Germany Friendship Association at the Chollima House of Culture Monday to remark the German national day. Present on invitation was a councilor of the German embassy here.
The vice-chairman of the association and officials concerned were on hand.
The participants saw the German documentary film "Along the Elbe".

Reception Given by German Ambassador

Present there were staff members of the German embassy here.
Speeches were made at the reception.

Chinese Embassy Officials Work with Koreans

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Ambassador Wu Donghe and officials of the Chinese embassy here Monday worked with Korean workers at the construction site of the Taean Friendship Glass Factory in Taean County, South Phyongan Province, deepening friendship with them. After being briefed about the progress of the construction of the factory, they joined in building the protection walls of the melting shop, encouraging Korean builders who were effecting innovations every day out of the desire to erect the factory as a monumental edifice of the times.
Expressing his admiration at the fast progressing construction of the factory, a symbol of Sino-Korean friendship, after its ground-breaking, the ambassador hoped that the Korean builders would splendidly erect the factory which is taking shape under the deep concern of the leaders of the two countries.

Chinese Party and State Leaders Felicitated

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, together with Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, and Pak Pong Ju, premier of the Cabinet, Tuesday sent a message of greetings to Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC and president of the People's Republic China, Jiang Zemin, chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Wen Jiabao, premier of the State Council, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and China. We extend warm felicitations to you and, through you, to the CPC Central Committee, the government of the PRC and the fraternal Chinese people on behalf of the WPK and the government and people of the DPRK on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and the PRC, the message says, and goes on:
The opening of the diplomatic ties between the two countries marked a historic event as it made it possible to develop the DPRK-China friendship with a long history on a new higher stage in all fields. It put powerful spurs to the socialist construction in the two countries and positively contributed to ensuring peace and security in Asia and the rest of the world.
Over the last 55 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations our two countries have steadily boosted the friendly ties, firmly supporting and closely cooperating with each other in the efforts to attain their common objectives.
It is the steadfast stand of the party and the government of the DPRK to set store by the DPRK-China friendship and consolidate it.
We are pleased to note that the DPRK-China friendship which had stood all tests of history is favorably developing in conformity with the desire and will of the two peoples despite the complicated international situation.
Convinced that this friendship would steadily grow stronger by the concerted efforts of the two parties, governments and peoples, we sincerely wish the party, government and people of China greater success in their work to attain the higher goal of the socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics and their efforts to achieve the reunification of the whole country.

Bush's True Colours as Robber Disclosed

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Minju Joson Tuesday in a signed commentary accuses Bush of letting loose a whole string of sophism to justify the U.S. military aggression against Iraq though he earned an ill-fame for it. The commentary goes on:
Bush said that the invasion of Iraq helped Iraqis to be freed from an unlawful dictator. This reveals that the criminal who had wantonly violated the UN Charter and international law and encroached upon the sovereignty of an independent state in broad daylight began realizing a crisis.
The Bush administration finds itself in a tight corner as its story about "Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction" proved to be a sheer lie and a product of its scheme and plot as the days went by.
Bush is making a far-fetched assertion to turn the situation favorable to him and remain in the presidential office at any cost.
What should not be overlooked is that he justified the U.S. aggression of Iraq, thus revealing his brigandish intention to do the same in any region or country in the world in the future.
The U.S. has massively deployed aggression troops on the Korean peninsula in a bid to spark the second Iraqi crisis.
It goes without saying that the massive arms buildup in and around the peninsula is aimed to round off its preparations for preempting an attack on the DPRK and stifling it by force of arms.
If the U.S. runs reckless despite repeated warnings of the DPRK it will only precipitate its self-destruction.
The Bush bellicose forces would be well advised to cool their heads overheated with war hysteria and face up to the trend of the times.

S. Korea's Much Fuss about DPRK's Import of Sodium Cyanide under Fire

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- The south Korean authorities are kicking up much fuss, asserting that the north illegally imported sodium cyanide which their enterprises had produced and exported to several countries in Asia. This can not but be an anti-national act shocking and infuriating the north, says Rodong Sinmun Tuesday in a signed commentary.
Deals in sodium cyanide are being done among countries on the principle of meeting each other's needs for their economic performance and progress and, therefore, it would pose no problem in trade, the commentary says, and goes on:
The nation lives in the era of reconciliation, cooperation and independent reunification of the country.
The direct economic deal between the north and the south, not through a third country, is in line with the trend of the times and in the interests of the nation. It goes without saying that it would have been better if direct import and export of the substance had been made between the north and the south.
It is deplorable that the south Korean authorities raised a hue and cry over the issue, far from regretting the failure to do so.
It is intolerable that they are taking legal actions against those enterprises that had produced and exported the substance.
It is quite natural to handle the issue of the north's import of the substance produced in the south in the interests of the whole nation. The attitude taken by the south Korean authorities towards the export of sodium cyanide is related to a fundamental issue showing whether they stand for national cooperation or cooperation with the outside forces.
The recent misbehavior of the south Korean authorities clearly proved that their action does not match their words as they talked about "cooperation" and "exchange" with the north whenever an opportunity presented itself.
The authorities should drop their antipathy towards the north at an early date and swim with the trend of the times for reunification after the publication of the June 15 joint declaration which calls on all Koreans to get reconciled and cooperate with each other in the efforts to achieve independent progress.

Thorough Probe into S. Korea's Secret Nuclear Activities Demanded

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- The recent disclosure of a series of hidden cases of secret nuclear experiments conducted by south Korea created a big furor worldwide. In this regard Minju Joson today says in a signed commentary: South Korea conducted an uranium enrichment experiment by laser in top secrecy in 2000 and a plutonium extraction experiment in 1982.
The nuclear activities of south Korea have reached such a level where it can possess elements necessary for waging a nuclear war such as extraction of nuclear substance, manufacture of nuclear bombs and production of means for nuclear delivery.
The development of nuclear weapons pushed forward by the south Korean authorities is a serious case as it pushes the situation on the Korean peninsula to an extreme phase and adversely affects the inter-Korean relations.
When the nuclear development was disclosed, the south Korean authorities busied themselves explaining that it was a "mere experiment" and "no more than a research at a laboratory." But this was nothing but a fig-leaf to cover up the truth behind their nuclear development.
South Korea has acted a shock force in implementing the U.S. war strategy against the north. If it goes nuclear, Koreans will suffer a horrible nuclear calamity and the whole land of Korea will be reduced to ashes.
Nobody can deny that such nuclear activities of south Korea have been conducted with the U.S. support and at its tacit connivance.
The U.S. should no longer be allowed to apply its unfair double standards to the nuclear issue and the truth behind the criminal nuclear activities in south Korea should be thoroughly probed.
The south Korean authorities should stop working to mislead the public opinion over somebody's nuclear issue, fully disclose the truth of their secret nuclear experiments before the world community and halt such dangerous development of nuclear weapons.

Japan Had Better Get International Trust

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- The Japanese prime minister at a recent session of the UN General Assembly was reported to have claimed that Japan was fully qualified to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council when its contribution to the peace and security of the international community and UN activities was taken into consideration. In this regard Rodong Sinmun Tuesday says in a signed commentary: The issue of Japan's becoming a permanent member of the UNSC is unthinkable unless the issue of its past history is settled.
It is a legal and moral obligation and an unavoidable duty of Japan to apologize and compensate for its crimes committed against the people of Korea and the rest of Asia in the past. Japan is keen to set out for world supremacy and the ranks of permanent members of the UNSC to this end. In other words, by occupying a permanent seat on the UNSC Japan seeks to pressurize and dominate other countries and thus lord it over the world. It asserts that the issue of history is different from the issue of making a bid for a permanent member of the SC in its nature. This is an insult to the people of Asia and the rest of the world who hope to see Japan's settlement of its past and a disregard of the UN.
Japan is making a pitch for a permanent member of the UNSC under the pretext that it pays a big share of the contributions to the UN. A permanent seat on the UNSC can in no way be bought. How much a country should contribute to the UN is fixed by the statute of the UN. The UNSC is neither an economic organization nor a board of directors of a company. Japan is sadly mistaken if it thinks it is entitled to sit on the SC for the mere reason that it pays a huge amount of fund as a contribution to the UN.
It is the fair public opinion that if major international political issues are to be impartially discussed and settled, permanent seats on the SC should be given to those countries that have an independent view, judgment and say, those countries enjoying support and trust from many countries and various developing countries.
An important issue Japan should settle at an early date is not an issue of becoming a permanent member of the SC but get international trust through the settlement of its past.
This would be a right option for Japan.

Folk Dishes Representing Korean Nation's Resourcefulness

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Folk dishes reflecting the resourcefulness of the Korean nation are becoming more popular among world people. From the period of the three kingdoms -- Koguryo (277 B.C.-668 A.D.), Paekje (the end of the 1st century B.C.-660 A.D.) and Silla (the middle of the 1st century-935) -- the Korean people have made taffy, sweet drink, etc. on the principle of saccharification by enzyme and soy sauce, bean paste and kimchi on the principle of fermentability by microorganism. By making use of the sprouting principle of plant seeds, they have cultivated soybean sprouts and green bean sprouts for their dietary life.
They also made bean-curds with the salting-out principle.
They have created cooking methods such as processing sliced pork mixed with pickled shrimps, beef with pear, and fresh fish including mackerel with parsley. These dishes are well digested and absorbed.
The combination of food materials of Korean folk dishes and the composition of diet meet the nutritive demand. Typical of them are boiled rice mixed with four other grains, sweet rice dish, fried rice, noodle and mandu (a kind of bun dumped with various food materials).
The Korean people are used to arrange the table with boiled rice, soup, kimchi and other various dishes. Such arrangement ensures rational combination of animal and vegetable foodstuff, acid and alkaline foodstuff.

Flocks of White Cranes come to Pyongyang

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Flocks of white cranes have flied over the River Taedong flowing through Pyongyang. It was early in September that white cranes started to fly over the River Taedong. The number of white cranes has increased in the middle of September.
On the morning of September 15 a flock of white cranes perched on the Rungna Islet and middle of the River Taedong.
These birds had flown over the River Taedong in the past. But it is a rare phenomenon that flocks of cranes flew to the middle of the city.
In recent years wild gooses and ducks have come to the River Taedong in Pyongyang in winter, sea birds in summer.
It is attributable to the nature conservation policy of the DPRK government.
Such land and environment protection projects as tree planting and river improvement have been carried on through a mass movement these years.
Nestles for animals have been built in river basins, animal and plant reserves instituted and useful animals bred and released in Korea.
Scientific research into propagation of Korean indigenous animals including white-bellied black woodpecker has been deepened.

Message of Greetings from Chinese Party and State Leaders

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, and Pak Pong Ju, premier of the DPRK Cabinet, Tuesday received a message of greetings from Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC and president of the People's Republic of China, Jiang Zemin, chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the PRC, and Wen Jiabao, premier of the State Council of the PRC, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and China. The message says:
We extend warm felicitations to you and, through you, to the Workers' Party of Korea, the DPRK government and the fraternal Korean people on behalf of the CPC, the Chinese government and people on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the opening of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries marked the beginning of the new friendly relations between the two countries.
Thanks to the direct care of the leaders of the two countries and the concerted efforts of the two parties, two governments and two peoples, the Sino-DPRK relations made great progress in all fields and the Sino-DPRK friendship stood the test of history.
Both sides have trusted each other politically and the traditional friendship has steadily grown strong.
Exchange and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and culture have steadily gained in depth, bringing important benefits to the two peoples.
The two countries are exerting concerted efforts to defend peace and stability in this region and the world, closely cooperating with each other as regards regional and international issues.
The Chinese party, government and people always set store by the traditional Sino-DPRK friendship and attach utmost importance to further developing the Sino-DPRK friendly and cooperative relations under the new situation.
We together with the DPRK side will strive to steadily promote the Sino-DPRK friendly and cooperative relations provided by the leaders of the elder generation of the two countries in the spirit of "inheriting the tradition, facing up to the future, building good neighborly friendship and strengthening cooperation."
We sincerely wish the DPRK prosperity.
We wholeheartedly wish the fraternal Korean people fresh, steady and greater success in all fields.

NAM Countries Called upon To Demonstrate Their Unity

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Choe Su Hon, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK who is leading the DPRK delegation to the meeting of foreign ministers of non-aligned countries held on September 29 on the sidelines of the 59th UN general assembly clarified the view of his delegation as regards the formulation of the joint stand of the NAM countries on major issues on the agenda of the general assembly. The NAM countries should demonstrate their coordinated and united might when discussing major issues and adopting resolutions at the UN general assembly and handle those issues in the direction of implementing the resolutions adopted at NAM meetings including its recent summit, he said, and went on:
The DPRK delegation considers it important for NAM member nations to preserve and press the existing approaches towards various agenda items of the UN general assembly including the UN reform, disarmament and human rights, pursuant to the resolutions adopted at NAM meetings including the 13th Kuala Lumpur summit.
The NAM member countries should firmly maintain the principled stand that the UN reform, security reform in particular, should be made in the direction of meeting the interests of non-aligned and other developing countries and thus clearly show that any UN reform excluding NAM countries is impossible.
Turning to the issue of disarmament, he underscored the need for the NAM countries to foil the attempt of the U.S. and other forces to handle the non-proliferation issue only at the Geneva disarmament meeting, the UN disarmament committee meeting and other meetings, set it their immediate task to include the nuclear disarmament issue in the official agenda items and pay primary attention to garnering UN support for it.
As regards the human rights issue, he called for rejecting any attempt to impose West's human rights standards upon other countries and exploit the human rights issue as a pretext for interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
Referring to the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, he said that the issue would be solved smoothly if the U.S. commits itself to drop its hostile policy toward the DPRK and takes direct measures to make reward for freeze on the principle of "words for words" and "action for action."
The DPRK will remain invariably faithful to the noble idea and purpose of the non-aligned movement as intended by leader Kim Jong Il who has paid particular attention to the strengthening and development of the NAM in order to carry out the intention of President Kim Il Sung in his lifetime and make a positive contribution to the NAM so that it may fully demonstrate its might as an independent political entity at the current general assembly.

Kim Jong Il Inspects KPA Unit

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA)- Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, inspected KPA unit 2734 honored with the title of O Jung Hup-led Seventh Regiment. He was greeted on the spot by commanding officers of the unit.
After learning about the unit's performance of duty, he looked round military lecture rooms to watch servicepersons in training.
He highly praised the feats performed by the unit, greatly satisfied to learn that it has put training on a regular basis and made it a part of its daily routine after contriving and manufacturing a lot of modern training apparatuses and thus prepared all its servicepersons as a-match-for-a hundred fighters equipped with high combat capability and technique.
He set forth tasks for increasing the combat capability of the unit, underscoring the need to intensify the work to fully equip the servicepersons with the WPK's Juche-oriented war methods and military technique as a modern warfare is fought in reliance upon high military science and technology.
He took deep care of the service and living of the soldiers, going round an education room, a bedroom, a mess hall, a kitchen, a washroom, a processing room and other places.
He acquainted himself in detail with all aspects of their life ranging from watching TV, reading books and room heating to the supply of fancy items, quality of water inside the washroom and sports activities and taught ways to improve them one by one.
He learned about the sideline farming this year, listening to the report of the commander of the unit on its organization.
He saw new stacks of the harvested grain stalks. He was very pleased to see the success made in the sideline farming, saying that one more spectacular scenery was presented by units of the army.
He highly appreciated the success made by the unit, greatly satisfied to le arn that it has meticulously organized the sideline job including stock breeding, cultivation of mushrooms and sideline farming to provide ample conditions for the diet of the soldiers.
He had a photo session with the servicepersons of the unit.
He was accompanied by KPA Vice Marshal Kim Yong Chum, member of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and chief of the General Staff of the KPA, and KPA Generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.
