Strike in S. Korea

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- The (south) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions staged a strike on November 6 demanding an end to the discrimination against the part-time workers, etc., according to MBC of south Korea. It was participated in by at least 120,000 members of the KCTU including the Hyundai Motor Trade Union and the Metal Industry Trade Union. They declared that they would carry on the struggle till the policy of suppressing workers is renounced, holding that the government's improvement proposal concerning the system of discriminating against the part-time workers, etc. is not in line with the workers' demand.

S. Korean Unionists' Anti-"Government" Actions

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- Members of the (south) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions reportedly staged rallies to vow to call a general strike and demonstrations in protest against the "government" in 18 areas of south Korea on November 6. That day a rally of at least 10,000 members of the Public Corporation Workers' Union for Wellbeing and other unionists who are part-time workers was held in the university street of Seoul to vow to call a general strike.
Speeches were made at the rally.
Tan Pyong Ho, chairman of the KCTU, said that the organization would continue a dynamic struggle even after the general strike unless its demand for an end to the suppression of workers is met.
Jong Kwang Hun, permanent representative of the National People's Solidarity, and Ri Sung Won, chairman of the National Federation of Public Transport and Service Trade Unions, called for uniting close to frustrate the "government's" campaign for labour suppression driving the workers to death.
At the end of the rallies the participants staged demonstrations shouting "No part-time job system. No labour suppression" and other slogans.
Similar rallies and demonstrations took place in Pusan, Taegu and other areas.

Japan Urged to Apologize for Its Piffle

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- The Reunification Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration and Peace on the Korean Peninsula on November 4 reportedly issued a statement titled "Japan should make apology at once for its shameless remarks." Recalling that a spate of nasty remarks justifying Japan's aggression on Korea in the past have come from the Japanese political quarters recently, the statement said:
Tokyo Metropolitan Governor Ishihara at a press conference on October 31 let loose the ridiculous jargon that Japan's colonialism in Korea "was humanitarian and had human touches".
Next day the former chairman of "the Society for Writing New Textbooks" said that "Koreans in those days staged a political movement requesting annexation to receive equal treatment with Japanese through it, rather than being protected by Japan."
Besides, foolish argument for justifying Japan's military occupation of Korea is openly spun out, such as the sophistry that "Koreans changed their names into Japanese at their own will" and "Korea-Japan annexation was just as it was approved by the League of Nations."
The statement hit at the shamelessness of Japan which, after taking away more than 8,400,000 Koreans by force and drafting 200,000 women to force them to sexual slavery for the Japanese army, claims this "was humanitarian and had human touches."
Ishihara and the Japanese authorities must make an official apology for mocking and insulting the Korean nation.

KCNA Urges Japan to Redress Its Past Crimes

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- A list of 427,129 Korean victims of forcible drafting during the Japanese imperialists' military occupation of Korea was disclosed recently. This has touched off bitter denunciation among all Koreans including the victims and unbiased world public as it is clear evidence proving the forcible drafting of Koreans committed by imperial Japan.
During the Pacific war, Japan forcibly took away more than 8.4 million young Koreans for slave labor and military service and forced 200,000 women into sexual slavery for the Imperial Japanese army and killed many of them.
The disclosed list of names is just a tip of iceberg of the crimes related to the forcible drafting committed by the Japanese imperialists.
The forcible drafting of Koreans and forced labor imposed upon them were the most hideous state-sponsored human rights abuses wantonly violating international justice and law as they were a product of Japan's policy to exterminate the Korean nation.
The Japanese government is under legal and moral obligations to thoroughly investigate and probe the truth behind the forcible drafting of Koreans, sincerely apologize to the victims and their bereaved families and compensate to them as it was committed at the instruction and tacit connivance of the then Japanese authorities.
The "Treaty on the Prevention of Massacre and Relevant Punishment", one of the international legal documents, stipulates that signatories shall commit themselves to prevent massacre or punish relevant criminals, confirming that it is a crime in violation of international law regardless of whether it is committed in peace time or in wartime.
However, the Japanese authorities have craftily worked to evade their state responsibility for the monstrous crime the Japanese imperialists committed against the Koreans in the past although more than half a century has passed since the defeat of Japan.
The Japanese reactionaries have not made any sincere efforts to repent of Japan's past crimes. They mocked at the victims by staging such deceptive farces as setting up "civilian fund" and "paying relief money", turned down law suits brought by victims and distorted the history textbooks dealing with Japan's past crimes.
In view of the stand and attitude of Germany and other members of the international community toward the issue of redressing past wrongs, Japan's approach towards the issue glaringly reveals its moral vulgarity before the international community.
Japan is a war criminal state as it brought untold disasters to the Koreans and other Asian people. It is, therefore, an unavoidable state obligation and political commitment for Japan to make apology and compensation to the victims in view of international law and from ethical and moral points of view.
Human conscience will keep watching Japan's attitude.

Adherence to Line of Attaching Importance to Science and Technology Urged

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today editorially calls for accelerating the building of a great prosperous powerful nation, adhering to the line of the Workers' Party of Korea on attaching importance to science and technology. The editorial says:
It is a revolutionary principle of leadership consistently maintained by the WPK to attach importance to science and technology and energetically press ahead with the revolution and construction in reliance upon them. The WPK now regards science and technology as one of the three pillars of building the great prosperous powerful nation along with ideology and the army.
It is the unshakable will of leader Kim Jong Il to bring science and technology up to the world's advanced level in the near future by developing them at a leaping pace and build a great prosperous powerful nation with their potential.
Rarely high are confidence and zeal of scientists and technicians and all the people eager to fully display the dignity and might of Songun Korea with the leaping development of the science and technology of the country. The recent national meeting of scientists and technicians was an occasion of a dramatic turn in definitely lifting the nation's science and technology to the world's advanced level in a brief time to suit the requirements of the new century.
The editorial appeals to the scientists and technicians to glorify the great Songun era endlessly by bringing a leaping progress of the century in science and technology in the spirit with which they opened the road of advance in building a great prosperous powerful nation by breaking through the grim ordeals of the "Arduous March" and forced march in bold offensive spirit.
It stresses that primary efforts should be oriented to the development of IT, nano technology and bioengineering, the main target of the development of science and technology in the present times, technical engineering of important fields including mechanical engineering, metal engineering and heat engineering based on up-to-date science and technology be lifted to a new height and researches into basic science be developed in depth and thereby our country should be turned into a world-famous powerful country of science and technology.

New Powdered Lactobacilli for Kimchi

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- The Institute of Foodstuffs under the Branch Academy of Light Industrial Science has succeeded in making a new kind of powdered lactobacilli for kimchi. It improves the flavor of kimchi and makes it possible to keep it fresh for a long time. It is also good for health.
The new kind is better than other kinds in controlling the amount of lactic acid bacilli in kimchi. So, it makes kimchi mellow rapidly and prevents it from becoming sour quickly.
It arrests the proliferation of colitis and other germs and prevents digestive and other troubles.
The powdered lactobacilli is of significance in producing kimchi in a scientific and industrial way.

Japan's Human Rights Abuses Denounced

Pyongyang, November 10 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Central Committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League issued a statement on November 9 as regards the disclosure of the list of over 400,000 Korean victims of forcible drafting, evidence proving the crimes the Japanese imperialists committed against the Korean people during their military occupation of Korea. The crimes the Japanese imperialists committed against the Korean people were, indeed, the most hideous human rights abuses as they were unprecedented in human history, said the statement. It went on:
Japan has not yet made any honest apology and compensation for its indelible human rights abuses though half a century has passed since the end of the Second World War. It is still persisting in its evil doings.
It is getting frantic in its anti-DPRK rackets, misusing the nuclear issue between the DPRK and the U.S. to meet their selfish interests in wanton violation of the spirit and agreed points of the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration adopted thanks to the goodwill of the DPRK.
Not a few countries in Western Europe, which were war criminal states like Japan, apologized for the aggression committed in the past and made adequate compensation to all victims in different countries. This generous gesture is going on.
It is only Japan that entered the new century with its crimes committed in the past century unredressed and is working hard to evade the liquidation of its past.
The soul of the millions of Koreans who met tragic deaths at the point of bayonets of the Japanese imperialists and under their jackboots remains alive indicting them.
It is the firm will and determination of the five million young Koreans to force Japan to pay for the Japanese imperialists' brutal aggression a thousand times generation after generation.
And there will be no slightest concession in this issue.
The Japanese authorities should properly understand the spirit of the Korean youth and unconditionally and immediately apologize and compensate the victims and their bereaved families for their violation of the rights of the Korean people in the past.
