U.S.-S. Korea Joint Military Drill Denounced

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- The U.S.-south Korea "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercise now underway in south Korea is a military drill aimed to step up the preparations for a war of aggression against the DPRK, threaten and pressurize it and fan up hostility toward it and war hysteria among south Koreans, says Minju Joson today in a signed commentary. Recalling that the U.S. is staging this joint military exercise at a time when the situation on the Korean peninsula is getting tenser than ever before, the commentary says that it will only bring dark clouds of a new war to hang over the Korean peninsula.
    The commentary goes on:
What should not be overlooked is that the joint military exercise is being staged despite the fact that the six-way talks for the settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula are expected to open thanks to the broad magnanimity and initiative of the DPRK.
There should be an atmosphere favorable for the smooth progress of the six-way talks and their good results. To this end any party to the dialogue should refrain from doing anything that may provoke or threaten the other party. The U.S. is, however, staging a war exercise to threaten the DPRK, its dialogue partner, and chill the atmosphere of dialogue, while giving lip-service to "dialogue".
This compels one to doubt the U.S. stand and attitude toward the dialogue for the settlement of the nuclear issue.
The U.S. should stop its reckless acts of threatening peace in Korea and souring the atmosphere of the dialogue and give up its wild ambition to invade the DPRK.
The south Korean military bellicose forces are well advised to bear in mind that they would be cursed and condemned by all the countrymen and meet self-destruction for their involvement in the U.S. imperialists' war moves against the DPRK and war rackets intended to harm the fellow countrymen.

GNP Urged to Dismantle Itself

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today carries a signed commentary castigating the Grand National Party of south Korea for having desperately worked to prevent the sports team and cheering group of the north from participating in the 22nd Taegu Universiad. But its attempts went for nothing as the groups arrived at Taegu, the commentary says, and continues:
The representative of the GNP and other ultra-right conservative fanatics in south Korea might have cried out "bravo" hoping that their aim would be attained after weaving most sinister anti-north plots ever known and frantically kicking off a racket for confrontation with it at what they called "August 15 people's rally." But they were seriously mistaken.
Though the GNP and other anti-reunification fanatics tried desperately, they could never stem the nation's main trend to become one and achieve reconciliation, unity and reunification.
The sports team and cheering group of the north went to Taegu with a unanimous desire to contribute to national unity and reunification in one mind with the compatriots of the south and south Koreans accorded warm welcome and hospitality to the north's delegation with compatriotic feelings.
The GNP is a group of politically blind men who can not see the true appearance of the north and the south joining hands in oneness.
The GNP is fated to be shortlived, its representative being an ultra-right pro-U.S. fascist element who has long earned an ill fame as "Choetler" from the south Koreans. It is as good as dead. The GNP estranged from the country and the nation should go to its grave as early as possible.

Japan's Moves for Reinvasion under Fire

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- Japan's defense chief referring to the issue of the dispatch of the "Self-Defense Forces" overseas including the "cooperation in international peace-keeping operation" in the "2003 white paper for defense of Japan" at a recent Diet meeting, asserted that the SDF should be allowed to conduct activities overseas, free from the framework of "exclusive defense" while tightening the nexus with the U.S. In this regard papers here today say that the principle of "exclusive defense" is the key point in the "Peace Constitution" of Japan, adding that Japan's declaration that it would let the SDF launch overseas expansion free from the principle of "exclusive defense" means its intention to launch reinvasion.
    Rodong Sinmun says:
It is as clear as noonday that when the Japanese reactionaries do away with the "Peace Constitution" and drop the principle of "exclusive defense," the SDF, free from any legal restrictions, will advance into Asia and other parts of the world to conduct undisguised military actions for aggression and disturb peace and stability there.
Japan is actively supporting the U.S. unilateralism and its policy for hegemony.
Lurking behind this is its sinister aim to launch reinvasion backed by the U.S.
Japan's undisguised ambition to start overseas aggression backed by the U.S. is becoming a reality. Its main target is the DPRK.
The army and the people of the DPRK are closely following Japan's moves for reinvasion with utmost vigilance.
Minju Joson says the world today is quite different from what used to be in the past when Japan invaded the continent as it pleased, urging the Japanese reactionaries to face up to the trend of the times, cool down their fever for reckless overseas expansion and behave with discretion.

Anti-DPRK Moves of GNP Flailed

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- The Reunification Solidarity of south Korea on Aug. 19 released a commentary titled "The representative of the Grand National Party should make an apology to the nation and quit the political arena." Grumbling that "the authorities were dragged by the north," the GNP and other anti-reunification conservative forces heaped malignant abuses on them for expressing regret at the frantic racket kicked up by those forces against the north on Aug. 15, the commentary noted, and continued:
At a time when all people were ardently looking forward to the participation of the north side's players team in the Universiad to present another impressive chapter of national reconciliation, the anti-reunification forces came out to block it through an extremely hostile act against the north.
Yet, they accused the authorities of expressing regret at it.
This is like a thief crying "Stop the thief."
It urged Choe Pyong Ryol, representative of the GNP, to apologize to the nation for the rowdyism and quit the political arena and the anti-reunification conservative forces including the GNP to stop their anachronistic moves to fan up confrontation between compatriots.

Basic Foodstuff Industry Developing Rapidly in DPRK

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- Basic foodstuff factories have been built in many areas of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. They, equipped with modern production processes, effective and precision technical facilities and computers, mass-produce various kinds of basic foodstuffs with such protein materials as beans. It was hard to run soy factories and foodstuff factories for lack of raw materials in the period of the "arduous march" and the forced march when the country's economic situation was difficult due to the imperialists' efforts to isolate and stifle the country and continued natural disasters.
Leader Kim Jong Il worked out an ambitious plan to build modern basic foodstuff factories in Pyongyang and in all provinces though the country was still in hard time, and guided the army to set a model.
National and provincial construction offices were established and the reconstruction of factories, manufacture and assembling of equipment and face-lifting of their compounds were accelerated all together in all parts of the country.
Modern basic foodstuff factories and foodstuff factories made their appearances in Pyongyang, provincial seats, Hoeryong city, Pukchang, Sakju, Changsong and Koksan counties and other places in a short span of time.
Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to newly built basic foodstuff factories and solved problems arising in management activities including supply of raw materials and containers, improvement of the quality of basic foodstuffs and increase in the kind of products.

New Battery Developed

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- A new kind of battery has been developed recently in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It is a self-generating battery by the chemical reaction of aluminum and oxygen. It, which produces no pollution, is considered to be much better than acid and alkali batteries.
The battery consists of air electrode (positive), aluminum electrode (negative) and electrolyte (salted water or sea water).
    It generates 1-1.5 volts.
A 0.4 millimeter-thick aluminum plate can be used for 8-10 hours.
When it is connected in series or in parallel circuit, it can increase the voltage to 12 and the power to 100 watts.
It can be applied to various communications instruments, lighting equipment and lighthouse.

S. Korean Army's Ceaseless Military Provocations

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- The south Korean army is continuing military provocations against the north while infiltrating warships one after another into the territorial waters of the north side in the West Sea, a military source said. At about 00:00 on Friday it illegally infiltrated one speedboat into the territorial waters of the north side south of Tungsangot of Kangryong County under the cover of darkness. It infiltrated one patrol boat and two speedboats from about 07:12 to about 10:15 and a patrol boat and a speedboat from about 11:45 to sail for hours.
It illegally infiltrated several patrol boats and speedboats four times on August 21 and three times on August 19 and 20 each into the territorial waters of the north side, rendering the situation in the waters extremely tense.
Such ceaseless intrusion into the territorial waters of the north side by the south Korean army after the start of the frantic Ulji Focus Lens joint military exercise across south Korea is a premeditated provocative move to spark a new incident in the waters in a bid to shift the blame for this onto the north.
