Works of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il hailed

Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- The international community is expressing full support and sympathy with the works of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il indicating the way of putting an end to the sufferings of the national division and achieving the reunification of Korea. The works were brought out in booklet and bulletin in a matter of a little over two years by over 100 publishing houses, political parties and organizations of different countries.
Among them are the Lao State Publishing House, the Dar Damascus Publishing House of Syria, the Denmark-DPRK Friendship Association, the Communist Party of Germany, the Publishing House for National Education of Guinea, the Mideast Information Center Publishing House of Egypt, the Publishing House of the Workers' Party of Mexico, the Inzeles Publishing House of Belize.
The full text or gist of the works were reported by more than 120 mass media including the Indonesian newspaper Indonesian Observer, the Singaporean newspaper Straits Times, the Jana of Libya, Radio Guinea, the Guyanese newspaper Chronicle and the Peruvian newspaper Pro To.
Among the works are Kim Il Sung's works "10-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation for the reunification of the country," "on the three principles of national reunification" and "on the five-point policy for national reunification" and Kim Jong Il's works "Let Us Carry Out The Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung's Instructions For National Reunification" and "Let Us Reunify The Country Independently And Peacefully Through The Great Unity Of The Entire Nation".
Political parities, organizations and media said that the works of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il on national reunification serve as a great programme and an immortal banner clarifying the way of national reunification. They expressed the belief that Korea would be reunified under that banner.

Anti-U.S. rally in S. Korea

Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- The people's action for the revision of the South Korea-U.S. "Status Of Forces Agreement", the All-People Measure Committee for the Closure of U.S. Bombing Range in Maehyang-ri, the Solidarity for the Return of U.S. Military Bases, young friends in the era of reunification and the headquarters of the movement for the return of U.S. military base in Ryongsan reportedly held the 44th anti-U.S. solidarity rally in Kwanghwamun of Seoul on May 13. The participants honoured the memory of martyr Jo Song Man who plunged to his death from a building, calling for independence against the U.S. 15 years ago and demanded liquidation of the unequal South Korea-U.S alliance.
At the rally speakers branded the move of a U.S. military base to Phyongthaek as a part of the U.S. new strategic principle of preemptive attack and preventive interference, warning that if it is not withdrawn at once, it would cause a serious crisis.
A letter to the U.S. President was made public at the rally.
The letter said that the South Korea-U.S. "mutual defense treaty" is an unequal one that left territorial, military and economic sovereignty lock, stock and barrel to the tender mercy of the U.S. and it is a symbol of subjugation and humiliation. It urged its immediate abolition.
It demanded an overall revision of sofa and requested the U.S. to drop its hostile policy toward the north at an early date and solve the nuclear issue in a peaceful way.

Grand candlelight march in S. Korea

Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- The People's Preparatory Committee for Memorial Service on the First Anniversary of June 13 reportedly formed a grand march group on May 13 and started the grand candlelight march for national independence and peace against war. The group will involve social members of different strata during its pilgrimage to different areas.
At a press conference called in front of the U.S. embassy as regards the start of the march, speakers said that the activities of the march group serve as a propaganda for the issue of Hyo Sun and Mi Son as well as independence and peace.
An action program of the group was made public.
It said that the march group would make the memorial service a nationwide event attended by one million people, making pilgrimage to all the U.S. military bases including that of the second U.S. division in Uijongbu and places of massacre of civilians for a month until June 13.
After the press conference the group marched up to Kwanghwamun, a venue of the 168th candlelight demonstration, shouting "bring Hyo Sun and Mi Son to life" and paid a protest visit to the U.S. military base in Ryongsan.

Anniversary of Kwangju uprising observed

Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- Newspapers here today dedicate articles to the 23rd anniversary of the heroic Kwangju Popular Uprising in South Korea. On May 18, 1980, youth and students and other people in Kwangju turned out in an armed popular uprising against the U.S. imperialists and their stooges who attempted to revive the military fascist dictatorship with the "May 17 military violence," stamping on a bud of democracy sprouting with the end of the "Yusin" dictatorship.
The uprisers fought bravely under such slogans as "Lift the emergency martial law", "Dismantle the Yusin system" and "Yankees, go home". They armed themselves with weapons taken away from martial law troops and defended the city of Kwangju for ten days after putting it under their control.
Rodong Sinmun says that it was a just anti-U.S., anti-fascist resistance for democracy and an armed uprising of the South Korean people to terminate the fascist rule of the U.S. imperialists and South Korean military fascists and achieve national sovereignty, democratization of society and the reunification of Korea.
20 odd years have passed since the heroic Kwangju uprising, but the desire of the uprisers has not yet been realized, the paper says, and goes on:
The South Korean people are under the U.S. imperialists' yoke of military aggression and murder even in the new century and there is still a stumbling block in the way of national reunification.
The U.S. imperialists hinder in every way the process of reconciliation and reunification of the Korean nation and bring a storm of nuclear war to the Korean Peninsula, further revealing their criminal colors today when the Korean nation's desire for independent reunification is rapidly growing with the adoption of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration.
As long as the U.S. policy of aggression against the DPRK and its military occupation of South Korea are allowed, it is impossible for the Koreans to live in peace even a moment, remove the danger of war from the Korean Peninsula and reunify the country.
Minju Joson says that all the Koreans will join efforts to wage a nationwide anti-U.S. struggle so as to implement the June 15 joint declaration and achieve the independent reunification of the nation without fail.

Message of sympathy to Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia

Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun sent a message of sympathy to his counterpart of Saudi Arabia Saud al-Faisal. Upon hearing the regrettable news that a bomb attack claimed heavy casualties in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia, the message expressed deep sympathy with the foreign minister and, through him, with the victims and their bereaved families.
Saying that it is the consistent stand of the DPRK to oppose all sorts of terrorism, the message wished the government and the people of Saudi Arabia success in their efforts to recover from the damage as early as possible and achieve the stability of the country and lasting peace in the region.

Fascist repression of students in S. Korea assailed

Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- The South Korean supreme court sentenced Kim Hyong Ju, chairman of the tenth-term South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon), to a prison term and defined Hanchongryon as an "enemy-benefiting organization". Rodong Sinmun today in a commentary brands this step as a fascist outrage going against the nation's desire for independent reunification.
The label of "enemy-benefiting" is a legacy of the past dictatorship, the news analyst notes, and says:
Instead of clearing away such legacy, the South Korean judicial authorities incriminate and crack down upon Hanchongryon by labelling it "enemy-benefiting" even today when all the members of the nation are advancing towards reunification hand in hand. Such behavior can never be tolerated, and it is a challenge to the north, one of the two sides responsible for reunification, and a perfidy to the June 15 joint declaration.
Patriotic people are jailed and righteous organizations are incriminated. Such tragedy should no longer be allowed in South Korea. And the "security law" and other evil laws, harmful to the movement for independent reunification through national cooperation, and remnants of the dictatorial era should be eradicated as soon as possible.
The South Korean judicial authorities should promptly withdraw the label of "enemy-benefiting" attached to Hanchongryon and set free Kim Hyong Ju and other patriotic students without delay.

U.S. dangerous military moves under fire

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- It was disclosed on May 8 that the U.S. decided to keep in South Korea its troops, which had been involved in the Foal Eagle joint military exercises staged in march last, timed to coincide with the U.S. 8th army command's order to extend the stay of officers and men of U.S. forces in South Korea even after the expiration of their term. The U.S. is staging madcap military exercises in South Korea and in its vicinity to start a war of aggression while bringing nuclear-powered carrier Carl Vinson and other ultra-modern nuclear attack hardware to Japan.
Minju Joson today in a signed commentary says that these developments seriously rattle the nerves of the DPRK, a dialogue partner, as they go against the trend of the present situation where the issue of negotiations for the peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is in the pipeline.
The U.S. has not discarded its sinister intention to stifle the DPRK with nukes but is keen to put it into practice, the news analyst observes, and continues:
The best way of averting a dangerous war and protecting the sovereignty of the country is to build up a physical deterrent force and stand up against a war of aggression.
No one can fault the DPRK because all self-defensive measures taken by it are just ones to counter the U.S. vicious moves to stifle the DPRK with nukes. If the U.S. does not give up its attempt at a preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK, it will be held wholly responsible for all the ensuing consequences.
The U.S. is well advised to have a proper option with discretion.

Message of sympathy to Namibian President

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, Friday sent a message of sympathy to Sam Nujoma, President of Namibia, in connection with the recent flood in its northeast area that claimed casualties and a huge material loss. In the message he expressed deep sympathy and consolation to the president and, through him, to the victims upon hearing the sad news and hoped that the government and people of Namibia would recover from the flood damage at an early date and bring the life of the people in the afflicted area to normal.

Committee for promoting joint national functions formed in S. Korea

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- The committee for promoting "joint meeting to mark the 3rd anniversary of the June 15 Joint Declaration, June 13 Joint Memorial Service for the Slain Schoolgirls and June 15 Grand National Festival for Reunification" of the Eastern Seoul District Federation of University Student Councils reportedly declared its inauguration on May 11 and published its declaration. Noting that the United States is putting its plan to attack the Korean Peninsula into practice, the declaration stressed that this is evidenced by its introduction of latest type weapons to South Korea, U.S. attempt to reposition U.S. troops in the area south of the river Han and its ceaseless war exercises.
In order to clear dark clouds of war hanging over the Korean Peninsula the Koreans should pool their efforts and wage an all out war against the united states, chieftain of war, it urged.
Underscoring the need to wage a positive struggle against the U.S. and war and for the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty between North Korea and the U.S. through national cooperation, the declaration called for turning out as one to support and implement the June 15 Joint Declaration.

Swiss chief of Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and her party feted

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea gave a reception in honor of theSwiss chief of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and her party on a visit to the DPRK at the Mansudae Assembly Hall yesterday evening. DPRK Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun, addressing the reception, said that the Swiss government and people have offered sincere aid to the DPRK out of humanitarianism, which greatly encouraged the Korean people in their efforts to do away with the natural disasters.
We would work hard to boost the friendly and cooperative relations with Switzerland in various fields on the principle of mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in other's internal affairs, equality and reciprocity, he added.
Micheline Kalmy-rey, chief of the federal department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, in her reply said that though they are in different continents and have different cultural traditions, the Swiss Confederation and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have many things in common in self-respect for their countries, the spirit of national independence and strong national identity.
Switzerland insists on the negotiated settlement of all the issues of the Korean Peninsula, she said.
Their cooperation that began with emergency and humanitarian aid leads to cooperation for development, which will bring about greater economic exchanges between the two countries, she said, and hoped for the prosperity of the DPRK as well as increased friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

U.S. forces in S. Korea accountable for massacre of one million civilians

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- The truth about the massacre of prisoners in Jonju prison in South Korea in the past was recently clarified by documents and photos of the U.S. government and witnesses testified to the U.S. imperialists' mass-killings of civilians from different parts of South Korea. A spokesman for the North Headquarters for the Nationwide Special Committee for Probing the Truth Behind GIs' Massacres issued a statement on May 16 in this connection. These irrefutably prove that it was none other than the U.S. forces present in South Korea who had perpetrated the massacre of a million civilians the probe into which has been strongly demanded in South Korea, the statement said, and went on:
As already disclosed, the U.S. imperialist aggression troops' bloody massacre of innocent civilians started from the humiliating day Yankees stepped on the land of South Korea under the mask of "liberator."
This massacre is reported in South Korea without a let-up even today.
These facts go to clearly prove that the united states is an "empire of evil" and the U.S. imperialists are ferocious stranglers and the sworn enemy of the Korean nation.
The U.S. imperialists are bringing dark clouds of a nuclear war to hang over the inviolable territory of Korea, leading the situation there to an extreme pitch of tension under the pretext of its nuclear issue.
It is as clear as noonday that in case they ignite a war of aggression on the Korean Peninsula the Korean nation will suffer tremendous losses in human lives and properties beyond compare with thousands of civilian casualties claimed by the U.S. war of aggression in Iraq.
All the South Koreans should positively turn out in an anti-U.S. and anti-war struggle to resolutely foil its policy to invade Korea and exterminate the Korean nation, clearly seeing through the aggressive and homicidal nature of the U.S. who has imposed untold disasters and sacrifices upon the Korean nation for nearly 60 years of its occupation of South Korea.
It is our belief that the international community that values justice and conscience will voice full support and solidarity with all the Korean people in their struggle to probe the truth about the shuddering massacres of civilians the U.S. imperialists perpetrated in Korea and punish the chief culprit.

Japanese reactionaries' wrong use of name of DPRK denounced

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- Japanese media are more persistently resorting to diatribes against the dignified Democratic People's Republic of Korea, defaming and wrongly using its name as "North Korea" and "Hokusen" in Japanese. In this regard Rodong Sinmun today carries an article contributed by dr. Mun Yong Ho. He in his article cites concrete facts that the Japanese reactionaries have disregarded and wrongly used the name of the DPRK, its symbol as an independent state, and gone to the lengths of restoring the defamatory title of Korea which Japanese used when it was under their colonial domination.
This is an unpardonable act of despising the Korean nation and infringing upon the national sovereignty as it tramples down upon the dignity of Korea and its nation and ignores the existence and authority of the DPRK, the article says, and continues:
When looking back on history Japan has never properly called our country the DPRK. especially in modern times Japan called our country "Han," groundlessly meaning that Korea was subject to Japan from the ancient times.
When the feudal state of Ri dynasty externally proclaimed that the name of its state was "the Great State of Korea" and "the State of Korea," Japan deliberately called it "Daisen" or "Sen" in Japanese.
During their colonial rule over Korea the Japanese imperialists defamatorily called Korea "Hokusen", "Saisen", "Nansen", regarding it as its colony.
Even today Japanese high-ranking conservative figures of ministerial level are free to make vituperation against the DPRK at official functions, calling it "Hokusen" and "Senjin" in Japanese.
Japanese reactionaries are so shameless as to assert that it is no problem for them to call the DPRK according to their usual practice as Japan has no diplomatic relations with it.
As far as the issue of diplomatic relations and practice are concerned our people are entitled to say something to Japan.
The DPRK has no diplomatic relations with Japan. The Korean people have a deep-rooted practice as regards the name of Japan.
From long ago, the Korean people have called Japan "Wae" in Korean.
All the historical records of Korea prove that the official title of Japan was "Wae" and the name of Japan was not used generally. Even today there is little change in Koreans' understanding and practice of calling Japan "Wae".
The word "Japanese sword" that entered the recently printed Korean dictionary is the only word relevant to the word of Japan. But it contains more than 80 ordinary words relevant to "Wae".
If the name of other countries may be wrongly used according to usual practice as the Japanese reactionaries claim, the word "Japan" which the DPRK has used in its official language can immediately change into the word "Wae" without any argument.
The Japanese reactionaries' wrong use of the name of the DPRK should never be overlooked.
If Japan is willing to redress its crimes committed against the Korean people, it should properly do so from a correct stand and immediately stop wrongly using the name of the DPRK.

Greetings to King of Norway

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, sent a message of greetings to Norwegian King Harald V on the occasion of the National Day. The message wished the Norwegian people progress and prosperity as well as the king good health and happiness.

DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman denounces passage of bills in Japan

Pyongyang, May 17 (KCNA) -- The house of representatives of Japan passed three bills to cope with "emergency" on May 15. A spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry Saturday issued a statement in this regard.
    It says:
The three bills are "a bill on coping with an armed attack", "a draft amendment to the law on self-defence forces" and "a draft amendment to the law on setting up a security council."
They, in fact, specify Japan's mode of counteraction in case a war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula.
These bills, among other things, justify the Japanese SDFs' participation in a war of overseas aggression in "case of emergency" and stipulate ways of mobilizing civilians for a war.
This indicates that they represent laws and regulations for carrying out a war of aggression similar to the "law on the general mobilization of the state" in their nature and content, the law enforced by the Japanese imperialists to launch its continental aggression in the past.
Of late, Japan has stepped up in real earnest the SDFs' overseas advance under this or that pretext. It had already participated in the Afghan and Iraqi wars and other wars under the pretext of supporting the "war on terrorism."
The recent carriage of the bills once again laid bare Japan's true intention to significantly expand the sphere of the SDFs' use of armed forces and launch overseas aggression, a complete switchover from its former policy of exclusive defence.
This clearly shows what a dangerous phase Japan's moves to revive militarism have reached.
The Japanese authorities cited non-existent "threat" from the DPRK in a bid to seek the carriage of those aggressive and dangerous bills to cope with emergency. This, however, will entail serious backfire.
Japan has not yet shaken off the ill fame of an enemy state although more than half a century has passed since the end of the war. Therefore, its efforts to justify its war moves will further strain the situation on the Korean Peninsula, which has become complicated due to its nuclear issue, and escalate the military tensions among its neighboring countries and other countries in Asia.
Japan's ever more undisguised moves for militarization clearly testify to the fact that it was quite just for the DPRK to have increased its self-defensive capacity.
Japan, obsessed with a vaulting ambition to convert the country into a military power, has chosen the DPRK as its principal target. This situation compels the DPRK to take every possible strong measure to cope with it.

    esas atrocidades siguen perpetrandose ahi.

"rodong sinmun" condena a reaccionarios japoneses
