Kim Jong Il gives field guidance to agricultural field

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il Tuesday visited a farm under unit no. 534 of the Korean People's Army to guide the work in the agricultural field. He was accompanied by KPA vice marshal Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the NDC of the DPRK and director of the general political department of the KPA, KPA vice marshal Kim Yong Chun, member of the NDC of the DPRK and chief of the general staff of the KPA, KPA vice marshal Kim Il Chol, vice-chairman of the NDC of the DPRK and minister of the People's Armed Forces, and KPA generals Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and secretaries of the C.C., the WPK Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam and first vice department directors of the C.C., the WPK Ri Yong Chol, Jang Song Thaek and Ri Je Gang.
    Kim Jong Il first looked round the new modern dwelling houses built by workteam no. 6 of the farm and farm machines and irrigation set-ups.
    After hearing a report on the farming from officials of the farm in the fields under maize and rice sown as second crops, he acquainted himself in detail with the second crop farming.
    Feasting his eyes on a vast expanse of fields under maize and rice of the farm where wheat and barley swayed only a few months back, he was greatly satisfied to see good crops of maize and rice which farmers sowed as second crops by putting the farming on a scientific and technical basis as required by our party's Juche-oriented method of farming.
    The next leg of his guidance tour was a new nursery created by the unit.
    Seeing with great satisfaction the nursery where saplings have grown thick in a few months, he highly praised the patriotic devotion of the researchers there who have devoted all their wisdom and energies to their work to raise more trees suited to the climatic and soil conditions of our country.
    Noting that it is one of the important undertakings for the prosperity of the country to plant more fast-growing and useful trees in our mountains and plains so as to build up our land in such a way as to meet the needs of socialism, he called for energetically carrying out this work in a mass movement.
    Doing two-crops-a-year farming well is the most important way of decisively increasing the grain production in our country where the area of cultivated land is limited, he said, urging all the officials and working people in the agricultural field to pay primary attention to this work.
    Noting that it is necessary to decisively raise the fertility of soil in order to do well the two-crops-a-year farming, he stressed the need to massively raise pigs, chickens and other domestic animals to increase the production of quality organic fertilizers and spray them on paddy and non-paddy fields. Recalling that this farm could reap a high yield by introducing an irrigation system which is easy to operate and requires less water and supplying a sufficient amount of water to the fields in good time during the dry season, he stressed the need to thoroughly establish the irrigation system to successfully do two-crops-a-year farming.


Reception given to mark PRC birthday

    Chongjin, October 2 (KCNA) -- The North Hamgyong Provincial Committee of the Korea-China Friendship Association gave a reception on Tuesday evening on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Present on invitation were consul general Liu Zhigang and members of the Chinese consulate general in Chongjin.
    Present were Kim Song Gwon, vice-chairman of the North Hamgyong Provincial People's Committee who is the chairman of the North Hamgyong Provincial Committee of the Korea-China Friendship Association, and other officials concerned. Speeches were made there.


National program competition and exhibition open

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- The 13th national program competition and exhibition opened yesterday. On display in the competition and exhibition hall are over 570 programs developed by scientists and technicians and more than 30 programs made by middle schoolers.
    Also displayed there are successes and experience gained by ministries, national institutions and various fields and units of the national economy in forming computer networks and introducing it to production and management and administrative and business activities.
    The competition and exhibition will include a competition of optical character and speech recognition programs, programs for Korean chess and word correcting programs and a lecture and scientific presentation on it.
    Vice-premier Jo Chang Dok, officials concerned, experts on computer program and others were present at the opening ceremony.


Greetings to Guinean President

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, today sent a message of greetings to Lansana Conte, President of Guinea, on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of its independence. Expressing belief that the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would grow stronger, the message sincerely wished the president and people of guinea greater success in their work for national unity and socio-economic development.


DPRK weightlifter sets new world record

    Pusan, October 1 (KCNA correspondent) -- Ri Song Hui, a People's Sportswoman of the DPRK, won a gold medal on Tuesday in the 53 kg category of women's weightlifting at the 14th Asian Games going on in Pusan. She snatched 97.5 kg and then set a new world record with a lift of 102.5 kg, 2.5 kg more than the listed world record.
    She jerked 122.5 kg. managing a total lift of 225 kg, she came first.
    Koreans from the north and the south in the gymnasium warmly congratulated Ri on her success, waving Korean Peninsula flags, and singing together the song "We are One".
    She told reporters that she could won a gold medal because she tried with the courage and grit of Mt. Paektu given by General Secretary Kim Jong Il.


New species of rape bred

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- DPRK agricultural scientists have succeeded in breeding a new species of rape. This rape can be cultivated in Pyongyang and other areas on the east and west coasts as it is more cold proof than its old species.
    A farm planted this rape and harvested 1.5 ton of rapeseed per hectare. The production of its oil was several times greater than that of bean.
    It contains a lot of essential amino acid including vitamin and its absorption rate is 99 percent.
    It is planted in mid-September and harvested in early June next year.
    It is massively planted on many farms in Pyongyang, South Hwanghae Province and North Phyongan Province.


Marine resources in Korea

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Korea is a maritime country, sea-bound on three sides (east, west and south). The seas are linked with the pacific ocean.
    The average depth of the East Sea of Korea is 1,668 m and the deepest spot is 3,699 m.
    The sea covers over 970,480 square kilometers and is rich in marine resources.
    About a million years ago the east sea was a land connected with the Asian continent but it turned into the sea due to lithosphere diastrophism.
    The coastal line of the sea is not indented so that there are relatively a small number of islets.
    The sea is affected by warm and cold currents and it, accordingly, abounds in fish resources.
    There are at least 600 species of fishes and sea animals and plants of thousands of species.
    The West Sea covers over 437,000 square kilometers. It appeared as land sank almost in the same period when the lithosphere diastrophism took place.
    The coast line of the sea is extremely indented in comparison with the east coast line. so there are more than 2,500 islands and islets, gulfs, peninsulas and capes.
    The average depth of the west sea is 39 meters and the deepest spot is 118 meters.
    There are over 220 species of fishes in the sea. It has inexhaustible sea plant resources such as different kinds of bivalvia, lavar, seaweed and kelp.
    The sea is characterized by shallow water and high and low tide.
    This is unfavorable for sailing but provides good conditions for constructing tidal power stations, building salterns and tideland reclamation.


Greetings to German President

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, sent a message of greetings to German President Johannes Rau on Tuesday on the occasion of Germany's National Day. He in the message expressed pleasure at the bilateral relations positively developing in different fields after the establishment of diplomatic relations.

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- A delegation of the South Korean Catholic Priests' Council for Justice headed by father Kim Pyong Sang arrived here today. It was greeted at the airport by Jang Jae On, chairman of the central committee of the Korean Catholics Association, and officials concerned.


Kim Jong Il meets with Russian artistes

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il met with Viktor Petrovich Eliseyev, head of the visiting State Academy Ensemble of the Russian Ministry of Interior and chief conductor of the ensemble, and its leading members and principal artistes. Present on the occasion were chief of the general staff of the Korean People's Army Kim Yong Chun, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Jon Pyong Ho, Kim Kuk Thae, Jong Ha Chol and Kim Ki Nam and Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Andrei G. Karlov.
    Kim Jong Il warmly welcomed the ensemble's visit to the DPRK and expressed thanks for its successful performance.
    Then, he conversed with the guests in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.
    Eliseyev expressed heartfelt thanks to him for having appreciated the performance of the ensemble and given encouragement to it though he was very busy.
    Kim Jong Il posed for a picture with the artistes of the ensemble.


Kim Jong Il enjoys art performance of Russian artistes

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il enjoyed a performance given by the visiting State Academy Ensemble of the Ministry of Interior of Russia at the Ponghwa Art Theatre. When he appeared in the auditorium of the theatre, Russian artistes said congratulatory words to him, presenting him with a floral basket carrying their boundless reverence.
    The performance began with the immortal revolutionary paean "Song of General Kim Il Sung". Its repertoire included choruses "Just War", "Lamp" and "Suburbs of Moscow At Night", male vocal solos and choruses "White Birch Standing in the Field" and "Kalinka", dances "Dance Celebrating Victory" and "Sailors' Dance Yablochko" and Korean songs "Dear General, Where Are You", "My Native Home" and "Song of Sea".
    The performers vividly represented the love of the Russian people for the motherland and their optimistic life with their high artistic skills.
    They drew down the curtain, loudly singing "Song of General Kim Jong Il" in Korean.
    Kim Jong Il sent a floral basket to the artistes in congratulation of their successful performance. Enjoying the performance were Kim Yong Chun, chief of the general staff of the Korean People's Army, Jon Pyong Ho, Kim Kuk Thae, Jong Ha Chol and Kim Ki Nam, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee, leading officials of the party and armed forces organs, servicemen and people's security workers.

DPRK women shooters win gold medal in Pusan Asiad

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- The DPRK team came first by attaining 188 points in women's team trap shooting competition at the Asian Games in Pusan today.
