Kim Jong Il inspects KPA flying unit no. 858

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- General Secretary of Kim Jong Il inspected KPA flying unit no. 858. He was greeted on the spot by colonel general O Kum Chol, commander of the air force of the KPA, general officers and commanding officers of the unit.
    He acquainted himself with the performance of the duty of the unit and heard a report on the situation from its commander before going round a room for the education in the revolutionary history.
    Saying that this air force unit has taken the proud road of victory for the last half a century, he noted that the undying revolutionary feats performed by President Kim Il Sung in building the air force will shine brightly with the history of the Juche-based air force.
    Conducted by the commander of the unit, he went round the rooms for flight training and got familiar in detail with the ground training of pilots.
    He noted with great satisfaction that the flying unit has secured good training equipment by itself to conduct all forms of ground flight training and steadily raised the level of technique and skill of pilots. He underscored the need to make it their daily routine to undergo flight training and get well versed in the Juche-based tactics of the air force.
    He advanced highly important tasks that would serve as a guideline in increasing the combat power of the unit in every way.
    Then, he moved on to an education room, bedroom, mess, kitchen, washroom, daily provision store and other entertainment and logistic facilities and took warm care of the living of soldiers with paternal care.
    The officers and men of the unit have made strenuous efforts to build it up well with ardent patriotism, thus bringing about a signal turn in the management of the unit to win everyone's admiration, he said, highly praising their achievements.
    This unit, which is well off and good at managing its economic life, can rightly be called a model of the revolutionary army in the ideological and moral traits and in the fighting spirit and in the way of living, he said, stressing that the whole army should conduct a powerful drive to learn from its example.
    He spared time to see an art performance given by soldiers of a company under the flying unit.
    He gave the unit an automatic rifle as a gift and had a photograph taken with its servicemen.
    He was accompanied by KPA generals Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee Ri Yong Chol, Jang Song Thaek and Ju Kyu Chang.


KCTU vows to hold large rally and strike

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- The (South) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) decided to hold a large-scale rally with the key industrial trade unions as a core in Seoul on May 26, Seoul-based Radio No. 1 and MBC reported. The organization announced that it would also inform International Labour Organizations of the authorities' arrest of South Korean workers.
    The confederation of taxi trade unions will also reportedly enter a general strike on May 24 in the wake of the Federation of Hospital Trade Unions and the "National Federation of Metal Industrial Trade Unions" under the KCTU.
    The Federation of Chemical Fibre Trade Unions, the Federation of Service Trade Unions and other trade unions are scheduled to launch a strike on May 22, then followed by the Federation of Public Sector Trade Unions on May 23, the "National Teachers Union", the Council of Trade Unions of Public Officials and other organizations under the KCTU on May 26, the radios reported.


Secretary general of WTO sees performance "Arirang"

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- Francesco Frangialli, secretary general of the World Tourism Organization, was interviewed by reporters at the May Day Stadium on May 17. He said that he very impressively saw the mass gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang".
    He further said:
    I, an expert in tourism, toured various countries of the world and saw many art performances.
    But I have never seen so wonderful and unique work as the performance "Arirang". I am very pleased to see so large mass gymnastic display and fascinating artistic performance.


International signature campaign conducted in Guinea

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- An international signature campaign supporting the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and demanding the immediate withdrawal of the U.S. forces from South Korea was held in Guinea from April 5 to May 8. The chiefs of staff of the army and the navy, the commanders of the Kamaene barracks and the Alpha Yaya Diallo barracks of the Guinean army, the head of the escort corps of the presidential office and the secretary general of the staff of the Guinean military police signed the signature paper on behalf of a total of 6,600 servicemen.
    The vice-chairman of the economic and social council who is also vice-chairman of the Guinea-Korea friendship association, officials of the ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation of the presidential office and editors-in-chief of the radio broadcast and the TV broadcast signed the signature paper on behalf of more than 300 personages and journalists.


Rallies of youth and students at home and abroad

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- Rallies of youth and students at home and abroad was held in Pyongyang, Seoul and Tokyo to glorify this year as a year of promoting unity and reunification by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation. Addresses of solidarity sent to the participants in the rallies by the north, south and overseas headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification (Pomchonghakryon) were read out at the rallies, then followed by speeches.
    Speakers said that the functions for reunification to be held on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the June 15 joint declaration will mark an occasion in demonstrating at home and abroad again the steadfast will of all the fellow countrymen to prevent the danger of a nuclear war created on the Korean Peninsula by the U.S. imperialists and realize the cause of national reunification by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation.
    They called upon the youth and students at home and abroad to turn out as one and devote all their wisdom and strength to checking and frustrating the U.S. plan for a war of aggression and driving the aggressors out of the country under the anti-U.S., anti-war and anti-nuke slogan.
    They also called upon all the youth and students at home and abroad to hold the June 15 functions for reunification without fail and make positive contributions to glorifying this year as a year of a new leaping forward to promote unity and reunification by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation, holding higher the banner of the joint declaration, and thus discharge their historic mission and duty for the times and the nation.
    A joint resolution was adopted at the rallies.
    The participants in the rallies loudly shouted and sang in chorus slogans and songs for reunification and "song of Pomchonghakryon," keeping fever for reunification prevalent in the meeting places, heard a lecture on the subject of national reunification, saw a video show on the anti-U.S. struggle and took part in other work.


DPRK judoists prove successful at third Asian Youth Judo Championships

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- DPRK judoists gave a good account of themselves at the Third Asian Youth Judo Championships in Damascus. Pak Myong Hui and Hong Ok Song respectively came first in the female 52 kg and 57 kg categories.
    Hong Chol Jun took the third place in the male 60 kg category and Kim Song Gum and Pak Ok Song in the female 45kg and 48kg categories.


Indictment conveyed to U.S. high-ranking officials

    Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- The committee for the promotion of the May 18 citizens court in South Korea called a press conference on May 14 to convey an indictment to the U.S. President and 7 other high-ranking officials at the time of the Kwangju resistance, according to news reports. Sim Jae Hwan, a lawyer of the bar association for democratic society, said that the U.S. has become a defendant for being involved in the crimes of rebellion, murder for the purpose of rebellion, massacres, etc. and the illegal act of interference in internal affairs.
    Read out at the press conference was a letter of recall of the U.S. President, the U.S. ambassador and 6 other high-ranking officials at the time of the May 18 Kwangju massacre who will be brought before the court.
    At the end of the press conference the three representatives conveyed the indictment to the U.S. embassy.
