Provocative acts which begin in New Year@= KCNA commentary =

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- The present South Korean chief executive held a "state security meeting" as the first official schedule of the new year on January 4 and incited confrontation with the north, according to a news report. It is likely that the north may continue "provocative infiltration" through several channels in the future too, he said, and ordered that the combined defence posture of civilians, the government and army should be heightened in a sustained way. Earlier, in his "New Year Address" he had clamoured about somebody's "possible provocation" and cried that they would "utterly cope with" it in "cooperation" with allied nations. All these indicate that he is resorting to reckless provocative acts from early in the year instead of reflecting on and apologizing for having conducted anti-north confrontation and anti-reunification war moves last year. On the New Year, the DPRK called on all the Koreans in the north, south and abroad to get united under the uplifted banner of national reunification irrespective of all differences. If the South Korean authorities have an iota of national conscience, they must lend an ear to the DPRK's call and change their wrong policy into one of alliance and reconciliation with the north. For this purpose, it is urgent to abolish or and dismantle all institutional mechanisms banning contact and dialogue between the fellow countrymen and national reunification. The provocative remarks of the South Korean ruler more clearly reveal his flunkeyist, traitorous and separatist nature. He will certainly be made to pay dearly for his provocative words against the DPRK.

Rallies and meetings held in DPRK

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- Working people of North Phyongan Province, South Hamgyong Province and Nampho and officials of ministries of railways, culture and public security held meetings on Monday and Tuesday to vow to carry through the tasks set out in the joint new year editorial. It was noted at the meetings that the joint editorial of the papers of the party, army and youth league is a militant banner rousing all the people to this year's grand march to greet the 21st century with proud successes in building a powerful nation. It was stressed that the Korean people will successfully build a powerful nation of Juche by pushing ahead with the second grand march of Chollima under the guidance of the respected Kim Jong Il as they built the socialist country, independent, self-supporting and self-reliant in defence, from scratch through the Chollima march under the leadership of the President Kim Il Sung. The participants resolved that, by bringing a new turning-point in production and construction, they will demonstrate once again the stamina of socialist Korea to the world and actively contribute to the building of a powerful nation of Juche.

Fascist suppression

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- A few days ago, the South Korean ruling quarters arrested Ri Kwang Hun, chairman of the General Student Council of Korea University, and three other former and current cadres of the council on the charge of violation of the "National Security Law." The mere reason is that they had not withdrawn from the sixth-term Hanchongryon (South Korean Federation of University Student Councils) which was defined as an "organisation benefitting the enemy", and they had also led rallies and demonstrations. Rodong Sinmun today describes their arrest as an unwarrantable act of the fascist gangsters hellbent on disorganizing and obliterating Hanchongryon and a wanton challenge of the anti-reunification traitors to the pro-reunification, patriotic forces. It is as clear as noonday that the South Korean rulers are trying to crack down on Hanchongryon more extensively this year in a bid to bridge over the ruling crisis, the news analyst says, and goes on: The heinous act of the South Korean rulers who are wielding the fascist bayonet from the beginning of the year shows that they intend to make a more vicious "scorched earth" offensive against the democratic forces for reunification this year.

Students under "Namchongryon" hold anti-American rally and demonstration

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- About 200 students of Chonnam National University and Chosun University of South Korea under the Kwangju and South Jolla Provincial Federation of University Student Councils (Namchongryon) held a "ceremony for forming vanguard of 'Namchongryon' and a rally for proclaiming Namchongryon's emergency to frustrate U.S. economic infiltration" Tuesday at Chosun University, a South Korean newspaper said. At a rally, the students denounced the United States for coiling up tension on the Korean peninsula with unjustifiable "nuclear suspicion" of the north and making undisguised economic infiltration into South Korea through the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They demanded that the United States immediately stop such moves. After the rally, the students burnt the stars and stripes in effigy and staged a demonstration, braving the suppression of riot police.

S. Korean authorities hit for humiliating act

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- The "national federation of unions of banking clerks for democracy" in South Korea lodged a protest with the authorities against their crime in selling off the Korea first bank to an American company, a Seoul-based radio said. In this regard the organisation released a statement on December 31 last year. In the statement it said in case the u.s. Company cuts clerks and shops, it will wage an anti-"government" struggle, and called for full guarantee for jobs of the clerks of the Korea first bank.

S. Korean workers' struggle supported

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- The Guyana Labour Union issued a statement on December 28 last year in support of the struggle of the South Korean workers. The statement describes the "restructuring" program of the South Korean authorities as a traitorous act of yielding to pressure from outside forces and a criminal act of sacrificing the South Korean people, including workers. It expresses firm solidarity with the South Korean workers and labor movement organisations in their struggle for an independent, democratic society and right to existence.

DPRK filled with confidence and passion

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- Korea, visited by Juche 88 (1999), is filled with great confidence and passion. Working people across the country put spurs to production and construction breaking through all difficulties and hardships in the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance in nearly response to the slogan "let this year mark a turning-point in building a powerful nation " colliers, including those of Anju, Tokchon and Sunchon area coal complexes, put production on a high level in the heat of a struggle for increased production from the first day of the new year. Pit construction is being hastened to increase the capacity of the existing coal mines. Electric power producers up and down the country meet the growing need for electric power by making the most of inner reserves. Working people throughout the country benefit from some 5,000 minor power stations built last year. They are gaining successes in the building of minor power stations through a mass movement from the beginning of this year. The Chollima steel complex began the Chollima movement by producing 120,000-tons of steel billets in a blooming mill that had a production capacity of only 60,000-tons in post-war days (1957). The Chollima Steel Complex, the Songjin Steel Complex, the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex and the Hwanghae Iron and Steel complex and other iron and steel works effect upswing in the new spirit of Chollima to obtain even one more charge of molten iron in the New Year. Youths introduce an innovation in construction of Pyongyang-Nampho Express Highway. They finished huge projects of filling and cutting earth and brought into shape a roadbed stretching hundreds of metres in a little more than one month after ground-breaking, they are filled with a firm determination to become honorable victors in sacred nature-remaking project of eternal value to realize the far-reaching plan of the Workers' Party of Korea for land construction. Agricultural workers make full preparations for farming. Farmers in northern mountainous areas, including Ryanggang, Jagang and North Hamgyong provinces, set themselves the goal of solving the food problem by planting more potatoes as staple crop this year. They engage themselves in different projects, including potato field improvement, the securing of high-yield seeds, manufacture of efficient sowing machine and a short course of cultivation technique.

Melee between ins and outs in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- Some 50 "National Assemblymen" from the opposition "Grand National Party" occupied by force room No. 529 of the "National Assembly" building which was supposed to be a secret office of the "Agency for National Security Planning" (ANSP), according to a radio report from Seoul. The occupiers searched all over the office, confiscated over 100 intelligence reports and held an emergency meeting of "assemblymen" in which they decided to boycott all the activities of subcommittees of the "National Assembly," as well as a meeting of the "Extraordinary session of the National Assembly" now underway, as an expression of protest against the political surveillance by the "ANSP" in the "National Assembly" building. In a related development, the ruling "National Congress for New Politics" and the "United Liberal Democrats" were busy seeking a "countermeasure," and the "ANSP" described the act of the "National Assemblymen" from the "Grand National Party" as "violation of domicile" and "larceny," threatening to "deal with it in strict fairness."

Impudent behaviour

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- Some time ago, the United States made another subcritical nuclear test in the underground nuke-test site in Nevada State and decided to resume production of tritium on the plea of maintaining the efficiency of hydrogen bombs. In connection with it, Minju Joson today comes out with a commentary. The news analyst says: In order to justify their moves, the U.S. ruling quarters are loudly crying that the subcritical nuclear test "does not contravene the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty". This vividly reveals the seriousness of the U.S.moves to easily attain its ambition for domination over the world by monopolizing nuclear weapons. The United States, having possessed technologies for subcritical nuclear test and computer mock nuclear test, "declared the freeze on nuke-test" and is calling for signing the "comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty". Lurking behind it is an ulterior intention of the United States, styling itself a "defender" and "champion" of world peace, to prevent other countries from making nuke-tests so as to keep a nuclear upperhand forever. Not content with it, the U.S. is now planning to produce tritium, a radioactive material, even in a civilian light water reactor, whose production has been banned from 1988. The United States should clearly know that nuclear weapons are not almighty and their use will precipitate its own destruction.

Minju Joson on renaming of ANSP in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- The Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the South Korean "National Assembly" recently passed a new "draft amendment to the law on the Agency for National Security Planning" (ANSP). According to the draft, the "ANSP" will be renamed "National Intelligence Service" (NIS). The "ANSP" will be formally the "NIS" in mid-January when the draft is passed at the plenary session of the "National Assembly" for promulgation. Minju Joson today bitterly denounces it as an open challenge to public opinion at home and abroad which strongly demands the dissolution of the "ANSP." The news analyst further says: The "ANSP" is a criminal den which orchestrates false information and tricks and which is engaged in murderous and repressive politics in South Korea. It is well known a fact that the present chief executive of South Korea had also demanded its dissolution whenever he was ensnared by the "ANSP". History shows that neither the democratization of South Korean society nor the country's reunification can be achieved with the "ANSP" remaining in South Korea. What the South Korean ruling quarters seek in their scheme to rename the "ANSP" "NIS" is to cover their true colors as an anti-communist and anti-reunification fascist tool and to use it as a shock brigade of their strong-arm politics and a murderous and repressive means.

Resolutions made to follow up arduous march with cheerful advance

Pyongyang, January 6 (KCNA) -- A meeting of vanguard youths was held on Tuesday in Chongsan-ri, Nampho, to vow to thoroughly carry out the tasks set out in the joint editorial of the papers of the party, army and youth league. Ri Il Hwan, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, made a report at the meeting, which was followed by speeches. An appeal to the youth and students across the country was adopted there. The appeal urged all the youth and students to become absolute worshippers, resolute defenders and thorough executors of marshal Kim Jong Il's ideas. Saying that the task and duty of the youth are heavy and enormous, it called upon the youth and students to fully discharge their mission and duty as honorable shockbrigade members in building a powerful nation. On the same day a meeting of employees was held at the Huichon General Machine tool plant to challenge the workers across the country to a socialist emulation. An appeal adopted at the meeting called for further building up the fatherland into an ideologically, militarily and economically powerful socialist country by waging a socialist emulation to carry out the line of the Workers' Party of Korea on the three revolutions--ideological, technical and cultural. It ardently appealed to all the workers across the country to make the general advance and charge with firm confidence in victory.
