Anniversary of Law on Sex Equality observed

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- A stage "Korean women have grown in the great bosom of the three commanders of Mt. Paektu" was arranged here on Wednesday to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality. Performers said the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality by President Kim Il Sung has made it possible for all the women of Korea to have equal rights with men and proudly play their role for the country and the people. They stressed that under the loving care of President Kim Il Sung, anti-Japanese war heroine Kim Jong Suk and General Secretary Kim Jong Il, the women could retake their rights as proud members of state and society and dynamically roll one of the two wheels of revolution.

S. Korean authorities urged to guarantee August 15 pro-reunification events

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Permanent Chairman Kang Hui Nam of the south headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification (Pomminryon) reportedly called a press conference in Seoul on July 24 after working-level talks took place between the north, south and overseas preparatory committees of the Grand Festival for Reunification on July 21. At the press conference Kang, who is also Chairman of the preparatory committee of Pomminryon south headquarters for a "Grand Festival for National Reconciliation, Unity and Reunification," said that with the north and overseas preparatory committees accepting a proposal put forward by the south preparatory committee concerning the agenda items of the talks, a historic agreement was reached on the agenda of the pro-reunification grand festival. A south preparatory committee of a "Grand Festival for National Reconciliation, Unity and Reunification" will be inaugurated from a new angle, which will include all political parties, public organisations and prominent figures approving the agreement of the working-level talks on the festival, he said. He called attention to the fact that the South Korean authorities would "approve" the festival, and demanded that, accordingly, the South Korean "government" guarantee a peaceful holding in Panmunjom of the Pro-Reunification Grand Festival and the "9th Pan-Korea Rally for Peace and Reunification of the Country" slated for August 14 and 15. He proposed to have the second round of working-level talks of the north, south and overseas preparatory committees on August 5 for a successful festival, and called upon the South Korean authorities to accept the proposal. He also strongly called upon the South Korean authorities to stop unreasonably describing Pomminryon south Headquarters and the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) as "enemy-benefiting organisations" and to guarantee a festival of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification (Pomchonghakryon) and other pro-reunification events that non-governmental organisations of reunification movement are planning to hold to mark August 15, the anniversary of Korea's liberation from the Japanese colonial rule. He made public the agreement adopted at the talks between the north, south and overseas preparatory committees of the grand pro-reunification festival.

What does five months in S. Korea show?

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Though five months has passed since a change of regime in South Korea, there has been no change in policy and everything remains unchanged. Politics still exists in a vacuum and the situation of the IMF-controlled economy has become all the more serious. The political confusion and economic failure of South Korea have put a dunce's cap on the head of the self-styled "people's regime." Commenting on what the South Korean authorities have done over the past five months, Rodong Sinmun today says: The "policy towards the north" they have pursued, crying for "improvement of inter-Korean relations" and "reconciliation and cooperation," is mere rhetoric. We have patiently kept a watchful eye on what their policy calling for "reconciliation and cooperation" and "separation between politics and economy" is like. But the South Korean authorities brought forward "reciprocity" at the vice-minister-level contact between the north and the south in Beijing and even planted a tapping apparatus at the negotiating table. As a result, the contact, which was held after a long interval between the two parts of Korea, broke off. When we proposed an August 15 grand festival for national reconciliation, unity and reunification, only the South Korean rulers showed a negative attitude to it. They are excluding from the festival the south headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification and the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils, the main forces of the reunification movement in South Korea, and scheming to foil the festival with the participation of riffraff's. While crying for the "separation between politics and economy," they have politicized South Koreans' visit to the north, used it for the purpose of escalating anticommunist, anti-north confrontation and infiltrated spies into the north through borders and seas for subversion and sabotage. Worse still, they have defined the north, their dialogue partner, as "sworn enemy" and allowed U.S. nuclear-powered flattops and huge combat equipment to be deployed in the sea off the Korean peninsula. Such acts are an open challenge to and provocation against the north. What the South Korean authorities have done over the past five months proves that they are seeking dependence on outsiders, fascism, confrontation and war, not national independence, democracy and reunification. They should renounce the outdated policy of dependence on outsiders, the policy of anti-north, anti-reunification confrontation and make a policy switchover towards national independence, alliance and reconciliation with the north and reunification. They should also reject outsiders and preserve the Juche character and national character. This is the only way out for South Korea. We will closely watch their future attitude.

Warmaniacs must not run riot

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Spokesman for the U.S. State Department Rubin told reporters on July 27 that the United States and South Korea are jointly patrolling coasts of South Korea allegedly to prevent a "new terrorism by north Korea," according to a news report. He added that the patrol was organised in compliance with "requests" from South Korea and that the United States dispatched its warships to support the coastal patrol. This is an open military provocation against and flagrant threats to the DPRK. The election to the highest power body was successfully held in the DPRK and the desire of the Korean nation for reunification has become more ardent than ever before with the approach of the planned August 15 Grand Pro-Reunification Festival. Such an adventurous military move as the coastal patrol being staged at this very juncture glaringly shows the U.S. is very perplexed by this. The U.S. and the South Korean authority intend to frighten the DPRK with military force and prevent the ever rising international prestige and influence of the DPRK. However, theirs is a vain daydream. "Prevention of terrorism" clamoured about by Rubin is precisely the repetition of the U.S. argument about "north's threat of southward invasion." It is nothing but a jargon to cover up the provocative and aggressive nature of the patrolling racket. The United States must neither utter heedless remarks nor try to test the strength of the DPRK. The South Korean authorities had better stop running amuck, clearly knowing that they will finally kill themselves while dancing to the frantic military tune of its American masters. If the enemies dare violate the dignity and sovereignty of the DPRK even a bit in defiance of our repeated warnings, the Korean people and People's Army will turn out as one to annihilate the aggressors.

Highest tribute paid to Korean people

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- "We pay once again the highest tribute to General Secretary Kim Jong Il and the friendly Korean people." The Socialist Unionist Party of Syria said this in the July 23 statement commemorating the 45th anniversary of the Korean people's victory in the Fatherland Liberation War. The statement recalled that the U.S. imperialists and their stooges had suffered a bitter fiasco in their armed invasion against the Korean people and surrendered. "We hope that the Korean people will surely achieve the cause of national reunification," it said. "Death to the U.S. and other imperialists, the enemy of the world people", the statement said, calling upon the fighters the world over to extend full support to the Korean people's cause of national reunification.

National art exhibition

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- A national art exhibition is now open at the Korean art gallery to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the victory in the Fatherland Liberation War (July 27). Put on display are some 100 art works of different themes. Korean paintings "Leader, the way ahead is forefront" and "Personally mounting a burning height," oil painting "On the way of advance" and others show President Kim Il Sung going up to the forefront in spite of danger during the war to lead the war to victory with his outstanding strategy and tactics. A large oil painting "Evening of victory in the war" and a Korean painting "Plaza of Victory" portray the people in joy of victory, firecrackers fizzling in nocturnal sky above the capital and the president full of conviction, unfolding a grand blueprint of rehabilitation and construction on the ruins of war. Oil paintings "For the Fatherland," "Victory," "Land and Soldier," and a Korean painting "Women of Namgang Village" etc. Vividly show the struggle of the people's army soldiers to defend the fatherland with their blood and people in the rear assisting the front. Korean paintings "Victorious March" and "Soldiers on Cho Island are waiting for us" and other works represent well the noble image of General Secretary Kim Jong Il training the Korean People's Army into an invincible army. Posters "Let us lay down our lives for the supreme commander " and "Human rifles and bombs " reflect a firm will to safeguard the supreme commander at the cost of life and defend Korean socialism to the last. Besides, there are works "Forward for Victory " and "Let us all go to the front in defence of the fatherland " which were produced during the war and other posters calling for national reunification and great national unity and condemning barbarities of the U.S. imperialists.

"RIMPAC" aims at Korean peninsula

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Kyodo News Service in Japan, quoting U.S. documents, said that the provocative RIMPAC 98 joint military exercises, which have been staged in the pacific waters around Hawaii from July 7, take aim at the Korean peninsula, according to a report. According to documents, the scenario of the exercises, which was worked out under the simulated condition of a conflict in a divided country, said that the United Nations would impose sanctions upon the target of attack and, at the same time, promptly dispatch multi-national forces. The commander of the 3rd fleet of the U.S. navy prattled that the scenario of the manoeuvres must be made practical. Facts clearly indicate that the RIMPAC is a military game being staged in an atmosphere of real war so as to kindle a war against the DPRK.

Rodong Sinmun calls for fair international financial and monetary system

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Developing nations should struggle to replace the inequitable outdated international order with a new equitable international financial and monetary system, says Rodong Sinmun in a by-lined article today. The article further says: The financial crisis of some Asian nations has been further aggravated instead of disappearing. This is attributed to the arbitrariness of the imperialists and the outdated international financial and monetary system. The United States seeks to plunder the economy of financial crisis-affected countries to its very backbonewith the "syringe" of the International Monetary Fund called "Relief Fund". This is something in nature of causing illness and then administering medicine. To establish a new equitable international financial and monetary system is a requirement for developing nations to extricate themselves from domination and exploitation by imperialists and achieve economic self-sufficiency. Realities prove that developing countries cannot successfully build a new life unless outdated international financial and monetary system is replaced with a new equitable one.

Celebrations of DPRK national day prepared abroad

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- A preparatory committee for celebrating the 50th founding anniversary of the DPRK was formed in Austria. Discussed at an inaugural meeting on July 23 was a programme of celebrations of the anniversary. The Madagascan Preparatory Committee held a meeting on July 25, reviewed its work after its inauguration and discussed the future plan.

Korean women called flowers of nation

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- July 30 is the 52nd anniversary of the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality. Since the promulgation of the law the Korean women have taken part with all rights in all aspects of social life. They are now in charge of one of the two wheels of the revolution, called the flowers of the nation. A large number of women have grown up to be heroines, labor innovators, professors, doctors and able officials of the party and state institutions. They greatly contribute to the prosperity and development of the country. Dr. Hyon Yong Ra of the nonferrous metals research institute of the national academy of sciences brought fabulous profits to the country by succeeding in making alloy materials and a material necessary for midget computer in reliance upon local raw materials. Merited actress Ryu Kyong Ae, a student of Pyongyang University of Dramaturgy and Cinematics, is famous for her successful acting in many films, including "the Nation and Destiny" and "Taehongdan party chief secretary." A people's athlete Ri Pun Hui came first at the sixth Asia table tennis championship at the age of 14. Later, she proved successful in many international games to exalt the honor of the country. A great many women labor innovators and heroines include a worker Choe Kyong Hwa who has devotedly worked as a mechanic from her girlhood with the January 18 General Machine Works, and labor heroine Kang Chung Sil, Secretary of the Primary Party Committee of the Songyo knitted goods factory, who has won the reputation of a "Weaver Heroine" by carrying out her yearly quotas in a matter of four months every year. Management board Chairwoman Ko Myong Hui of the Chongsan Cooperative Farm, merited teacher Ho Jong Suk who is mistress of Janggyong Primary School in Pyongyang, a spinner Paek Sol of the Sariwon Textile Mill and many other women have recently been elected deputies to the 10th Supreme People's Assembly. The Korean women who account for a half of the nation's population enjoy a happy life, realising their hopes to their heart's content and giving full play to their creative faculties with the same rights as the men's.

Rodong Sinmun observes 52nd anniversary of Law on Sex Equality

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today carries an editorial titled "Let us further strengthen Korean women's movement under party's leadership" on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of President Kim Il Sung's promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality. Since the President promulgated the law on July 30, Juche 35 (1946), the Korean women have fully exercised their rights as full-fledged members of society, with the same qualifications as men's, and the history of a new turn has started in the Korean women's movement, says the daily. Noting that the movement has traversed a proud road, it says: The Korean women will remember forever the undying feats of the President who brought them up to be true revolutionaries pushing one of the two wheels of revolution, a powerful unit of nation-building. In Korea led by General Secretary Kim Jong Il, the women are loved as flower of revolution, flower of the country and flower of society, and are taking an active part in socio-political life. Women hold a considerable proportion of the elected deputies to the 10th Supreme People's Assembly. In a new historic era when we have General Secretary Kim Jong Il at the head of the party, state and revolutionary armed forces, we should put the Korean women's movement on a new, higher stage. All the women should hold General Secretary Kim Jong Il in high esteem as the eternal sun of life, saviour of destiny and benefactor for all ages. In order to glorify their whole life as true loyal subjects, they should follow the noble example of the indomitable communist revolutionary fighter Kim Jong Suk, a paramount model of women revolutionaries. The Korean women should further strengthen militant solidarity with the women of other countries who are struggling against aggression, war, subjugation and inequality and for social progress, democracy, peace and the future of the rising generation.

Indefinite hunger strike vowed in S. Korea

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The prisoners' struggle committee at the Kwangju prison in South Korea vowed to stage an indefinite hunger strike 25 days after Former Chairman Kang Wi Won of Hanchongryon (South Korean Federation of University Student Councils) went on a hunger strike. The committee said in an announcement carried in the newspaper Hangyore that Kang was in a critical condition and he should not be killed. It noted that Hanchongryon is neither a "force for overthrowing the system" nor "violence-seeking force," and that the definition of Hanchongryon as an "enemy-benefiting organisation" should be withdrawn. It said that the deputies to the fifth-term Hanchongryon vowed to stage an indefinite hunger strike till the present South Korean Chief Executive takes a proper step.

Unprecedented-in-scope deficit of S. Korean banks

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- South Korean banks suffered a total of 6,700 billion won of deficit in the first six months of the year, a Seoul-based radio said. The Korea first bank and the Bank of Seoul ran a deficit of 1,300 billion won respectively. The Choheung Bank, the Hanil Bank, the Commercial Bank of Korea and the Foreign Exchange Bank registered a red figure of more than 500 billion won each.

Military tactics contributed to victory in war

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Korean People's Army (KPA) defeated the enemy's numerical and technological superiority with its unique military tactics during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 1950-July 1953). President Kim Il Sung made sure that the KPA officers and men creatively applied diverse tactics to the battles against the enemy on the basis of the experience established during the anti-Japanese armed struggle and requirements of modern warfare. Typical of the tactics are assault team activities, aircraft-hunting and tank-hunting group activities, tunnel warfare, sharpshooters team activities and so on. These tactics were more actively introduced into battles from Juche 41 (1952). Assault team members of the KPA made over 480 assaults on the main objects on the front and in the rear of the enemy line, killing, wounding or taking prisoner tens of thousands of enemies in 1952. Especially, the KPA soldiers occupied Hill 351, which the enemy had fortified for more than a year, in only 30 minutes with the strong support of artillery fire on July 10, 1952. Aircraft- and tank-hunting group members destroyed some 200 tanks and shot down 1,219 planes in diverse ways in the same year. The tunnel warfare was very effective on Height 1211 and other areas of the front and coastal defence. The enemy flying corps and artillery showered 4,160 bombs and 527,260 shells and made 1.817 rounds of strafing on an average open every square kilometer of the area centering on Height 1211. But, the KPA units beat back the enemy's attacks, depending on tunnel positions. The activities of sharpshooters teams (6-8 member each)restrained the enemy from individual and collective action in the front area. The KPA soldiers precipitated the defeat of the enemy with different tactics including mobile artillery company and individual machine-gun activities.
