Undying work very instrumental in effecting fresh upswing in ideological and moral qualities

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today dedicates an article to the 12th anniversary of the publication of General Secretary Kim Jong Il's work "On Some Problems of Education in the Juche Idea" on July 15, Juche 75 (1986.) The work convincingly proves that the guiding idea of the Workers' Party of Korea is great, indeed, and gives a comprehensive exposition of the principles that should be maintained in training the party members and other working people to be true communists with the Juche-based outlook on the world. Efforts have been made to put into effect the ideas and theories laid down in the work. As a result, a fresh upswing has been effected in ideological and moral qualities of the Korean people, the daily says, and continues: The Korean people know no other ideas but the Juche idea. Only when the popular masses' cause of independence is guided by the Juche idea, can it emerge victorious without fail. The Korean people have such a faith and will. They are persistently preserving the Juche character and the national character in the revolution and construction and maintaining independence in relations with foreign countries. In recent years the imperialist allied forces have intensified vicious anti-socialist campaign to isolate and stifle the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The political, economic and military positions of Korean socialism have been built up, though. Such great achievements are attributable to the wise guidance of Kim Jong Il, who is leading the party members and other working people to imbue themselves with the Juche idea more firmly and maintain the revolutionary line of the Workers' Party of Korea in the revolution and construction, a line which is the embodiment of the Juche idea.

Meeting of north headquarters of Pomchonghakryon

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- A meeting of the central committee of the north headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification (Pomchonghakryon) was held in Pyongyang on July 14. The meeting discussed measures for successfully holding a "grand festival for national reconciliation, unity and reunification" and the 8th grand reunification festival of Pomchonghakryon within its framework. Kim In Ho, chairman of the north headquarters of Pomchonghakryon, said in his report that the South Korean authorities are interfering with the participation of the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils and members of the south headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification in the festivals. He called for sharpening vigilance against anti-festival, anti-reunification moves of the separatist forces, waging a vigorous struggle to frustrate them and strengthening solidarity and unity with the south and overseas headquarters of Pomchonghakryon. The meeting heard speeches and adopted decisions on successfully ensuring the August 15 grand festival. The meeting was attended by presidium members and members of the central committee of the north headquarters.

Strike in S. Korea

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- More than 55,000 unionists went on a strike for rights to existence in South Korea on July 14, a Seoul-based radio said. The federation of metal industrial trade unions under the influence of the South Korean Confederation of Trade Unions said that involved in the strike were 23 trade unions of the Hyun Dai Motor Company, the Dae Woo Motor Company, the Dae Woo Heavy Industries ltd., the Hyun Dai Precision ind. co., ltd. and other companies. Upwards of 32,000 unionists of the Hyun Dai Motor Company started an indefinite total strike, and on July 15 unionists of the Dae Woo Shipbuilding and Heavy Machinery ltd. And the Ulsan Factory of the Hyun Dai Precision ind. co., ltd. will join them, said the radio. Trade unions of the South Korea communications engineers co., ltd. and other public sectors and some banking trade unions will go on a strike in solidarity with them, it added. Unionists strongly call for a stop to the unilateral "structural reform" by the puppet government authorities, the lift of the layoff system and the payment of wages in arrears.

Rodong Sinmun supports S. Korean workers'struggle

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- After refusing to join the deceptive "labour-management-government committee," the (South) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Federation of (South) Korean Trade Unions held a joint rally involving some 100,000 unionists on July 12 and strongly urged the puppet authorities to stop "restructuring" of the economy at once. The organisations warned that they would call a general strike on July 15 unless their demands are met. Commenting on this, a news analyst of Rodong Sinmun today says: This is a just act to restore democracy and vital rights lost to the oppressors and enjoy a true life worthy of man. The "labour-mangement-government consultation" and "employment measures" on the lips of the South Korean authorities are deceptive tricks to calm down the resentment of workers and more tightly bind them to the fetters of the reactionary rule. It has become clear that nothing can be expected from the present regime. Therefore, the South Korean workers have risen in the struggle against the treacherous misrule. The massive struggle for democracy and vital rights is the best choice for the South Korean workers. Only the struggle is the way out for them.

Kim Il Sung lauded in S. Korea

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- "Great Man," "History of Bloody anti-Japanese war," "Dawn of Reunification" and other books have been brought out and widely read in South Korea. Those books deal with the greatness of President Kim Il Sung and the South Korean people's deep reverence for him. In the preface the Thaeyang society says the book "Great Man" tells of the personality of President as a great man as demanded by the people with surging yearning for him. The book "Dawn of Reunification" published by the society for the promotion of reunification leads the people to cherish strong yearning for the President who devotedly worked for the reunification of the country all his life. A book "Sun's Day, Eternal Holiday of the Nation," "Torch" and many other books have been published. Those books tell of the great achievements and noble virtues of the President.

Popular electoral system in DPRK

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- The election of deputies to the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) will be held in the DPRK on July 26. All the citizens of the DPRK including workers, farmers, servicemen and intellectuals will take part in the election as masters of state and society. In the DPRK, the election is freely and fairly held by secret balloting on the principles of universal, equal and direct vote. Every citizen who has reached the age of 17 unrestrictedly participates in elections with equal rights and has the right to elect and to be elected in elections to people's assemblies at all levels. In April Juche 79 (1990), the election to the 9th SPA took place in Korea. 2.9 percent of the elected deputies was below the age of 35, 56.8 percent was at the age ranging from 36 to 55 and 40.3 percent was above the age of 56. The workers of the elected accounted for 37 percent, farmers 10.4 percent and women 20.1 percent. And the proportion of scientists, technicians, specialists and other holders of academic titles and degrees was 64.5 percent. Each voter is entitled to directly cast only one ballot, and deputies of the same number are elected at constituencies set up with the same number of people as a unit. Special sub-constituencies for patients and travelers are set up at hospitals, sanatoria and major railway stations and mobile ballot boxes are used for those old men and women and patients who are not able to go to the polls. As seen above, all the citizens of the DPRK are entitled to fully express their will. This is why democratic and equal elections are always held in the DPRK. This shows that the electoral system in the DPRK is the most advanced and popular one.

Japan cannot rid itself of responsibility for crimes

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today says Japan can never justify the crimes it committed against Korea and losses it inflicted on the Korean people in the past, and urges it to settle the crime-woven history as early as possible. In an article the daily says: Many countries and nations have honestly repented of even sins they committed against their will. But Japan, which perpetrated unheard-of crimes intentionally under the sponsorship of the state, has persistently refused to assume responsibility for the crimes and make an official apology and compensation for them. Japan's monstrous crimes against Korea and the immeasurable losses it inflicted on the Korean people have been proved by historical facts. Ignoring the stark facts, however, Japan is willfully beautifying and justifying the crimes. It is really brigands and shameless for Japan to describe the aggression on Korea and colonial rule over it as "lawful" and "legal." In the hope of evading its responsibility for the crimes against Korea and compensation for them, Japan has alleged that it did "good things" for Korea in the past. The allegation is a brazen-faced lie and a militaristic logic. Japan should clearly see the present situation, public demand and the trend of the time, take a proper attitude towards the history and atone for the crimes as soon as possible.

Schoolchildren's brass bands

Pyongyang, July 15 (KCNA) -- A march of brass bands of schoolchildren in Pyongyang took place at Kim Il Sung Square a few days ago. Thousands of schoolchildren from 10 districts of the capital marched along streets, playing in concert "children's union march," "let's hold high the red flag," "song of election" and so on. Conspicuous are activities of schoolchildren's brass bands with the approach of the election of deputies to the Supreme People's Assembly slated for July 26. Solemn and militant melodies of their brass bands are heard in different parts of the capital. According to an official of the City Youth League Committee, schoolchildren's brass bands have been formed at almost all senior middle schools. Schoolchildren learn how to play on musical instruments through art circle activities at schools after the lesson. Wind instrument music is very popular among schoolchildren. The brass band of the Pyongyang Tangsang Senior Middle School in Kwangbok Street, Mangyongdae District, ranked first at several national contests. The school was thanked by General Secretary Kim Jong Il for distinguishing itself in socio-political activities of its brass band. The Pyongyang Tonghung Senior Middle School is drawing public attention for it has formed a brass band with schoolgirls. Their light music encourages working people on their way to work and delights them on their way home. Schoolchildren's brass bands are active in local areas, too. The sound of brass bands all over streets, villages, major construction sites and farmlands is inspiring working people with confidence and courage with the election and the 50th anniversary of the DPRK drawing near.
