Gifts to General Secretary Kim Jong Il from Finnish and Swiss organisations

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- Gifts to General Secretary Kim Jong Il were sent to the Korean Embassy in Helsinki by the Finnish National Committee for the Study of the Juche Idea, the Turku branch of the Finland-Korea Association and the Finland-Northeast Asia Trade Association in congratulation of his election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. Martin Lotscher, Chairman of the Swiss Committee for Supporting Korea's Reunification, visited the Korean Embassy in Bern and asked to convey a gift to General Secretary Kim Jong Il.


Congratulatory letter to General Secretary Kim Jong Il from Choe Hong Hui

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il received a congratulatory letter from Choe Hong Hui, President of the International Taekwondo Federation, on his election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea on Oct. 8. Choe Hong Hui said in the letter that he extends the highest glory and warmest congratulations to general Kim Jong Il, the defender of the motherland and the symbol of all victories and the future, reflecting the common minds of the Korean nation and humankind and on behalf of the 40 million taekwondo players. General Kim Jong Il is just like President Kim Il Sung and the entire nation should live under the care of the general, the true defender of the nation and lodestar of the reunification of the country, he noted, and added: "Excited at the happy news, all overseas Koreans and I renew our determination to uphold and follow you as our eternal leader and savior of the nation." "No matter which way the wind may blow, I will fully support the reunification proposals advanced by President Kim Il Sung and you, and devote myself to their realization, with firm confidence that the country will be reunified as it is led by you."


Floral baskets to DPRK embassies in different countries

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- The Cambodian King and foreign political parties sent floral baskets to DPRK embassies in their countries to congratulate the great leader general Kim Jong Il on his election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. A delegation of the General Department of the Royal Palace of Cambodia paid a congratulatory visit to the Korean Embassy on October 10 on the instruction of Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk and laid a floral basket before the portraits of President Kim Il Sung and General Secretary Kim Jong Il in the name of the king and queen. A congratulatory delegation led by Moussa Solano, First Secretary of the Administration of the Party for Unity and Progress of Guinea visited the Korean Embassy in his country on Oct. 9 upon the authorization of the Political Bureau of the Party and laid a floral basket before the portrait of General Secretary Kim Jong Il in the name of the Party. The Commission for External Affairs of the Central Committee and the Propaganda and Education Ideological Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party sent floral baskets to the Korean Embassy in Vientiane on October 9. Joseph Msika, National Chairman of the Central Committee of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front and Minister of State in the President's office, paid a congratulatory visit to the DPRK Embassy in Harare on October 10 upon the authorization of the Central Committee of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front and laid a floral basket of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Central Committee before the portrait of General Secretary Kim Jong Il. On October 9 Chairman of the Socialist Party of Romania Vasile Orleanu and members of the Party leadership paid a congratulatory call at the DPRK Embassy in Bucharest and handed over a floral basket to General Secretary Kim Jong Il. Huudu Yahaya, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress of Ghana, and other officials of the Party, Ivan Rodriguez, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Dominica, who is staying in Cuba, a congratulatory delegation led by Ibrahima N'diaye, Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the African Party for the Solidarity and Justice of Mali, Alhaji Alhassan Bene, General Secretary of the Eagle Party of Ghana, Petar Velickovic, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Yugoslavia, a delegation of a Khmer Party led by its Chairman, Jorgen Petersen, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Denmark (Marxist-Leninist), a delegation of the Togolese People's Rally led by first deputy General Secretary Adad Sangti Sani, Lokendra Bahadur Chand, Former Prime Minister of Nepal and leader of the National Democratic Party, Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Secretary General of the Pakistan Muslim League (j), and other political figures of Pakistan, and Vlastimil Balin, First Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of the Czechy-Morava Communist Party, paid congratulatory calls at the Korean embassies in their countries.


General Secretary Kim Jong Il highly praised in s. Korea

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- The south Koreans are congratulating the great leader general Kim Jong Il on his election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, the Seoul-based radio Voice of National Salvation quoted organizations under the National Democratic Front of South Korea (NDFSK) as saying. Members of the Hyangil Society in Chonan city, South Chungchong Province, held a photo exhibition. On display at the exhibition hall were a portrait of general Kim Jong Il and 50 other photos showing his traits as a great man. Pasted on the wall of a building in Tongrae district, Pusan, on October 10 was a large wallpaper congratulating the general on his election as WPK General Secretary. Written on a large wallpaper published by the February 16 Fellowship Society as a special issue was a message saying: "Congratulation and glory to general Kim Jong Il !" The wallpaper says that the general's election as the Party chief is the honor of the nation. It introduces his greatness, and calls for a vigorous struggle to bring earlier the day when the general is held in high esteem as the leader of a reunified Korea. It also introduces "Song of General Kim Jong Il", an immortal revolutionary song, along with the music. Copies of literature praising the general were distributed in Kwanak district, Seoul, on October 9 in the name of the February 16 Fellowship Society. Written on the literature were letters saying, "The great leader Kim Jong Il is elected as WPK General Secretary ! Congratulations to him. Long live Kim Jong Il !", illustrated by a picture showing the south Koreans raising cheers, looking up to the general. Written on the back were letters saying, "Let us uphold, follow and venerate forever General Secretary Kim Jong Il, the supreme leader of our nation ! February 16 Fellowship Society" as well as the words of the revolutionary song "Song of General Kim Jong Il". On the same day leaflets congratulating General Secretary Kim Jong Il on his election as WPK General Secretary were scattered around Mt. Yudal in Mokpho, South Jolla Province.


Vitality of Pyongyang Declaration

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- The number of the political parties supporting the Pyongyang Declaration is on the increase. The Communist Party of Bulgaria signed the Pyongyang Declaration "Let us defend and advance the cause of socialism" on Oct. 10. The number of those political parties which signed it reached 236. This is a clear proof of the significance and vitality of the Pyongyang Declaration which verified the truth and validity of the socialist cause and the inevitability of its victory. It is called the Pyongyang Declaration as it was adopted in Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It was signed by 48 leaders and delegates of 70 parties from five continents including the Workers' Party of Korea on April 20, Juche 81 (1992). The socialist cause will be invincible, it says, and stresses: "We will march forward under the banner of socialism in close unity with all the progressive political parties, organizations and people of the world who defend socialism and fight against capitalism and imperialism." "Let us all fight to the end to shape the future of humankind with firm confidence in the socialist cause." "The final victory is in store for the people who unite and struggle for socialism." Senior officials of progressive political parties of different countries issued a statement "Let us advance under the banner of the Pyongyang Declaration" at a meeting in Russia in April last. The delegates of more than 20 progressive political parties including the union of the communist parties-the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the communist parties of India and Canada inked the statement and called for remaining faithful to the socialist cause under the banner of the Pyongyang Declaration.


Peasants demand U.S. take poisonous beef out of s. Korea

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- Peasants under the National Federation of Peasant Association in south Korea suddenly waged a demonstration before the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Oct. 13, according to a radio report from Seoul. They denounced the U.S. for exporting to south Korea beef with food poisoning gem, and urged it to take out the beef. They demanded the U.S. discontinue its unreasonable trade pressure on south Korea to open its markets. They attempted to break into the U.S. Embassy with the use of ladders.


S. Korea to purchase military hardware

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- The south Korean authorities decided to purchase 250 billion won worth of some 1,000 "mistral" portable anti-aircraft missiles from France by the end of 1999, a Seoul-based radio report said. They say that with the missiles joint operations of the U.S. troops stationed in south Korea and the puppet army will be more efficient. This shows how much they have got mad over the war provocations against north Korea to seek a way out of the present crisis.


NDFSK Central Committee publishes communique

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- The Central Committee of the National Democratic Front of South Korea on October 9 published a communique on an enlarged meeting of its presidium held as regards the great leader general Kim Jong Il's election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, the Seoul-based radio Voice of National Salvation said. Discussed at the enlarged meeting held in Seoul was an agenda item "on grandly observing the auspicious event in which the respected comrade Kim Jong Il, the sun of the nation, was elected WPK General Secretary." The communique says that representing the deep reverence of all the vanguard fighters and people of all strata for the great leader general Kim Jong Il the NDFSK Central Committee will send a congratulatory letter and a silk banner to him, WPK General Secretary. All the organizations of the NDFSK and its affiliated patriotic movement organizations will make active efforts to hold colorful events in accordance with the specific conditions in support of his election as WPK General Secretary, the communique notes. Various means of propaganda, it says, including the radio Voice of National Salvation and the paper Kuguk Jonson of the NDFSK and other progressive news media will conduct propaganda among the people in various forms and ways as regards his election as WPK General Secretary. Overseas missions of the NDFSK will hold various political events in celebration of his election as WPK General Secretary, the document says. More books and printed matter on the greatness of the respected general Kim Jong Il, WPK General Secretary, will be published and distributed so that the whole of south Korea may be filled with the singlehearted loyalty and filial piety to the general, the sun of the nation and the lodestar of national reunification, it adds.


World Food Day marked

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today marks the World Food Day. The World Food Day was instituted to make people understand the importance of the food problem for existence and development of humankind and to intensify international discussions over the urgency of and resolutions to the food problem, the paper says, adding: Now the food problem of the world is one of urgent matters. Many countries are facing food shortage and 800 million people are suffering from famine every year. Developing countries are trying to abolish backwardness in agriculture and diversify agriculture for increase of production and attain self-sufficiency in food. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea was hit hard by repeated natural disasters in recent years, but it is positively trying to eradicate the aftereffect and increase agricultural production. A good result will come when all the countries and peoples try to resolve the food problem and extensively develop international cooperation and interchange in agriculture and food problem.


Kim Il Sung Stadium

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) - The Kim Il Sung Stadium is one of the big stadiums in Korea, which is equipped with all sports facilities. At the stadium, political events as well as sports activities take place. A few days ago, a meeting of trade unionists and a joint national meeting of the organizations of the Korean Children's Union took place at the stadium to hail the great leader General Kim Jong Il's election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. Situated at the foot of Moran Hill in Pyongyang, it is associated with President Kim Il Sung's immortal revolutionary activities. On Oct. 14, Juche 34 (1945) the President officially showed up before the people and made a historic address at this place on his triumphant return home after the liberation of the country. Originally it was called the Moranbong Stadium. After a reconstruction project, it was renamed the Kim Il Sung Stadium in April, Juche 71 (1982). It has 100 thousand seats, above which is a 30 meter-wide roof, and up-to-date sports and welfare facilities for players. It is equipped with good lighting facilities for games at night. At the stadium there have taken place hundreds of national events, such as local and international games and mass gymnastics displays. Among the events are the large-scale mass game "our glorious fatherland" performed in august, Juche 48 (1959) and the friendship marathon race of socialist countries in June, Juche 64 (1975) and an Asian regional football preliminaries for the 20th Olympic games in May and November Juche 60 (1971).


Rodong Sinmun on Korean people's unshakable faith

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- It is the unshakable faith and will of the Korean people to venerate the great general Kim Jong Il for all ages and carry on the revolution under his guidance. U.S. government decides to give emergency medical assistance to DPRK

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- The U.S. government decided on October 14 to give five million dollar's worth of emergency medical assistance to the DPRK as a humanitarian step. Included in it are measles vaccine, cold treatment apparatuses and technical assistance to hospitals and clinics in 100 counties. This step follows the U.S government's three-time offer of 52 million dollar's worth of food to the DPRK this year.

Pyongyang, October 16 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il received a gift from the entourage of the member of the House of Representatives of the United States on a visit to Korea. Toni Hol, member of the House of Representatives, handed the gift to Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister Kim Yong Nam today.
