Extremely reckless and provocative manoeuvres

Pyongyang, September 2 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun in a signed commentary today denounces the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean war maniacs for staging the provocative "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercises across south Korea from August 18 to 29. The paper says: The frantic exercises were an unprecedentedly large-scale war gamble which involved more than the three services and marine corps of the U.S. Forces in the U.S. mainland and present in south Korea, 16,500 strong, the army of south Korea and major administrative organs of the Government. We bitterly condemn the U.S. military and the south Korean belligerent group who drove the situation of the Korean Peninsula to a dangerous phase of war by going against the ardent desire of the nation for peace of the country and its peaceful reunification and staging the war manoeuvres against the north. We warn once again that trying to stifle with "strength" the dignified and powerful DPRK where the leader, the party and the masses are in perfect harmony is as foolish as kicking into pricks. It is our character to mete out a thousandfold stern punishment to provokers. The U.S. bellicose forces and the Kim Young Sam group would be well advised to clearly see the reality and not to act rashly.

Japan's ideological preparations for overseas aggression condemned

Pyongyang, September 2 (KCNA) -- The Japanese reactionaries are now hellbent on infusing militarism into people. In this connection, Rodong Sinmun today carries a signed article denouncing the moves. In Japan events are held undisguisedly to laud as "patriots" and "heroes" those who were killed in the past overseas aggression war, and attempt to revise history textbooks is being made under Government direction to bury the Japanese imperialists' history of aggression in oblivion. And ultra-right reactionary organizations are preaching revanchism while news media are extensively agitating for war among people, allegedly for Japan's "security", the paper points out, and says: The purpose of such moves is as clear as daylight. The Japanese reactionaries are persistently seeking to realise the old dream of "Greater East Asia Coprosperity Sphere" the predecessors failed to bring into practice in the past. To this end, they are launching a campaign of inciting militarism to lay an ideological foundation for overseas aggression while stepping up military preparations. That is why politicians of Japan, disregarding the strong protest at home and abroad, visited in groups "Yasukuni Shrine" to pray for the soul of the war dead and lauded them as "fighters" or "patriots" who made "merits" for "prosperity" of Japan. Their revision of history textbooks is also for this purpose.
